      My friend and other bridesmaids were fine as they are white.... I hate to say it, but I'm used to it. So I've taught myself over the years and can do a decent job. It just sucked that as the Maid of Honour I couldn't just chill, I sat myself in the bathroon and did my own makeup while everyone else was in the main suite. At least the makeup artist refunded the coat of doing my makeup so that's something!

      makeup is made to be used so it's ridiculous to spend that kind of money on it
      i get it's cheaper than a lot of the luxury items but it's hardly ever worth it and no one is going to see it like they would you wearing a bag or clothes out
      maybe if it was back in the day when there was less of a selection of good makeup but drugstore has stepped it up majorly and a lot of indie brands are better than anything more luxury named brands put out at half the price AND look cute

    Robert, your rant about colour ranges in kits is so valid! Of course dark and deep skin tones are the biggest and most obvious gap, when you mentioned pale ones it really struck me, being pale and cool/neutral is never ever catered for! My sister did a makeup lesson to refresh her skills I was the "model" and the foundation and concealer were about two/three shades too dark and she actually said oh I don't have anything light enough for you, normally people don't want their makeup this pale! And any time I go to get my makeup done professionally I'm always asked if I'm going to put tan on and I already have it on! It's so frustrating! Why don't they have a white to lighten?! 🤷🏼‍♀️

    • @montananerd8244
      @montananerd8244 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      I'm not unusually fair, but every single girl in the usa tanned in the 80s except me (ok, I exaggerate), the makeup was all orange, and I could never match my own skin. It's like commercial makeup mixers believe there's 3 shades of medium toned white ppl, and no one else. Don't even get into undertones lol!

      @@montananerd8244 100% I'm from Ireland, so pale but not the palest ever, I can just about get away with a drugstore lightest shade right now, back when I was a teenager there was literally zero pale foundations and that's why it took me until my 20s to get into makeup at all, imagine people paler than me? Who need the white mixer shade as foundation?? It's like everyone is a light or medium beige, no lighter, no darker!

      I’m in my 30s now and tbh I’ve just given up on makeup completely. I’m pastyAF and no company seems to do my shade. It’s all shades of orange.. even ‘porcelain’ is orange?! 😂

    • @CeruleanStar
      @CeruleanStar ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@bobbiemc2188 As a teen, I was that kid who could have used the white mixer as a foundation. It would have been far closer than what I was using back then, tbh. (My skin has darkened a couple shades since then after living a few years closer to the equator and not wearing enough sunscreen. I can get by with the absolute lightest drug store shade now, second lightest high end.)
      As a teen, I was taught to "blend the foundation into the neck." I wasn't the only one doing this. People of all skin tones had to, since there just weren't as many affordable options available as there are now. If you didn't happen to fall into the five or six tones the store sold, you were blending it into your neck. No one thought anything of it so long as you didn't accidentally turn your face orange. Poorly matched foundation was normalized, at least in my region.

      My skin is a really strange colour. I'm pretty fair, but also have yellow undertones. So, I can't get any foundation that suits me. Either it turns me a sickly yellow color, like I have a severe case of hepatitis, or it makes me ghostly, to the point of looking dead! And, if I try and mix shades together, I look like I've gone pale orange!!
      As a result, I've given up wearing foundation altogether.

    I cannot use powder to set my under eyes. I don't care who makes it, how light weight it is, how little I use, and how I apply it - all powder makes my under eyes look like they are dried up creepy crusty nasty things. My trick to using concealer under by eyes is first you want a creamy concealer not drying (looking at you Shape Tape). I apply ONE dot at the bottom of my eye socket right smack in the middle (I am currently using the Dior Forever Skin). Then I use my concealer brush and using a tapping motion I spread that one dot up the towards my eye spreading it out until I reach right under my eye and the inside corner of my eye. Once I am done spreading the product I use my finger to light push the rest of product in. This hides all the discoloration of my under eyes and smooths everything out which I love. The best part is because I use so little product I don't need powder to set anything. My concealer doesn't crease and doesn't look like a dried up piece of fruit.

    I love how you talk about skintone ranges. Being Olive, I don't have it quite as bad as deeper skintones(seeing the vitriolic disrespect they get with makeup{not getting into the rest of it} puts me in a rage), but it's bad enough. When they whack on the most Yellow foundation they have on mr, and don't consider undertone, then it turns Jaundiced at best, sometimes ruddy, Oompa Loompa Orange...I'm almost fine with ashy, as you can add blushers to liven it up from Eastern vampire, but I hate the fake tan while intoxicated looks they tend to give me. Double insulting when you tell them what your actual shade is that's in their kit, and they refuse to use it.
    I'm glad you gave a different school of thought about vibrancy.
    I can't use warm/neon colours...at all. They turn garish so fast. It's Orange, ruddy, muddy, awful.
    I can do cool-toned and inner glowy all day. I love when the weather cooperates and I can get away with dewier no foundation at all looks. Because my foundation is powder, I have to start dewy to prevent caking the under eyes so yeah, I prefer your definition of vibrancy.

      Olive undertone here too! I look like a Simpsons character with some foundations… I was so happy that Haus Labs has olive as an undertone for their foundation. Hope more brands expand their shade ranges even more in all directions.

      I'm olive but so super pale that my skin tone just doesn't exist in foundation, except for east Asian brands, which I don't have access to. Pale skin only exists in pale pink and pale yellow, apparently.

    • @DinkyInky2
      @DinkyInky2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @pathetic mortal
      Shiseido used to make them, then they revamped their foundation including an expansive range of shades that don't really match, because they're running too warm for me. They do have lighter shades, but uncertain how they'd work on your skintone/undertone.
      I've been using the darkest Zeesea Powder foundation in stock(which is about a shade lighter than me) just to take the shine away(they're pretty inexpensive on Amazon if you have Prime, though restocks are dependent on the shipments to the US(if you live here)), and don't catch in my lines much so far. Plus the compacts are so pretty, though I wish I they sold refills.
      Pür 4-in-1 Love Your Selfie(the liquid) has some pretty pale shades for Olive complexions, and have minis so you can try them out without too big a hit on the wallet. Didn't work as my base for me, as the ones I got are far too pale, but is pretty as a concealer. Maybe they might have one for you?

    • @DinkyInky2
      @DinkyInky2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Brooke Kivi I wanted to try that one, but I am allergic to some of the extracts in it. (T-T)
      I have a cool undertone, and an Olive Complexion. I think that's why a lot of Olive foundations don't work on me, because they literally aren't making my undertone, so they turn wrong because they're warm.

    Now that I am 60, I have gradually worn much less makeup. And just as you said Robert, I use baked, mineral products on my cheeks.
    One thing I wish you would address is the use of a coal black eyeliner on both the top and bottom. I have several friends who probably wore their makeup like this in the 90's, and haven't made the adjustment of wearing less. It is terribly aging, and I haven't found a way of bringing it up with them. (I know, I'm a wimp. But you have to know who can handle hearing something like that!)

    • @sagebeauty
      @sagebeauty ปีที่แล้ว +4

      If they love it, let them wear it. Your opinion is your own. Makeup is very personal and what you think is ageing is not what they think. Would you not be friends with them over some eyeliner? I think not. Just let it go. Ageing is to be cherished and celebrated.

    I have such dry skin and I hydrate and moisturize and all that. When I do my makeup I have dry patches I have found a few things that help with that but I once tried the moisturizer over makeup and it does not do well! It’s spreads your makeup to other places , makes it more patchy, and leaves some spots on the face with no makeup.

    I have to agree here. It would be nice if they taught you all skin types, shades, etc... I've also been in the position where I've had to loan my products. I would also say I've had to teach on a shoot as well. Surprisingly even had to teach an artist on the same shoot. Granted it was special effects, but as an artist you should know how to do it if you accept the job.

    So with the TikTok about colour makeup for mature skintones - I know what she was trying to say but I don't think it's exactly about cool tones vs warmth; or rather what she means by cool tones isn't exactly the same as what cool tones are. Greyish contour type shades are cooler but they're also muted - you don't contour with a silver or ice grey tone! Not to be a seasonal colour person lol but if you think about a Clear/Bright Winter palette for example, the colours are all cool tones but are also very bright and vibrant - they're not the ashy muted types of greys and mauves, they're royal blues and bright magentas and cherry reds. I think going for the brighter, more lively colours of what suits you is a better way to phrase it rather than 'warm colours' per se - ageing doesn't change your undertone. Also don't forget to take into account the impact greying hair can have - cooler colours can actually look better with grey hair if you go for bright jewel tones.
