This is despite the fact that Ivar had done comparatively little at that time, and had only just captured York. And yet, his father and older brother had raided Frankia twice and been a scourge on England. Ivar is indeed smart, smarter than all his brothers, but he would hardly deny that he had certain advantages due to his birth and to family connections. Viking society respected martial prowess and a reputation for bravery and cruelty, much more than and intellect and scholarship, the two things Ivar had over his brothers. Also, no Viking family that was not the height of nobility would ever raise a crippled child. Ivar's entire existence depended upon him being born royal.

Ubbe, when he is close to death, in his fight against Frodo, and afterwards, keeps his cool. Also, Ivar never put himself in harm's way nearly as many times as Ubbe has. Ivar is a trash talking punk with an inferiority complex. He knows Ubbe is braver and stronger than him. Same with Bjorn. They're better men than him so he resents them. And Hvitserk is mentally tougher than Ivar as well, since when he was about to be burned alive he was at peace with it.

It always pissed me off man. Aside from how Heahmund went from being so damn intense and having such a presence and conviction as a character, to being all but pussy whipped within two seconds of knowing Lagertha (except the episode he dies where he realises God in his entirety), I always thought it would have been more appropriate if Hvitserk gave him a beating while he was Ivar's prisoner and then later if Ubbe did the same and they actually discussed Heahmund ruining their attempts at peace. Two whoopings for the one he delivered to Ubbe. But like Luix said, Ubbe does try to kill him on the battlefield.

Bryan quijanes ortega naaaaah none of the them are better warriors than Bjorn Ironside, he’d already earned his nickname by the time he was same age as Ivar. Hvitserk himself doesn’t think Ubbe could beat Bjorn, (s4b ep17) in fact even Ubbe decided not to fight Lagertha as soon as Björn was there, same reason the writers left him out of the scene with ragner (who wants to be king, s4Bep11) he’s skewered and butchered berserkers, beaten Mountain Bears one vs one, he beat the English and the French with his father, and raided the Spanish coast where he even saved Hvitserk. Björns probably the greatest Viking Warrior we’ve seen so far in the show, considering for all he’s done since season 1, he’s only just the same age as Ragnar season 1. P.s. before you drag up wiki history I do know about the the fate of Ragnar sons which is why I’m only going off what we’ve seen in the show, like the fact that the other sons are still young and have to develop like Bjorn
lxchness Not really wiki history, there are several novelizations of this story, the one by Bernard Cornwell is my favorite one, but there are several others like The First Warrior or the North Atlantic saga (while they are novels and try to fill some gaps with imagination, they are still based on historical facts), and there is also history (not the one from wiki). Ivarr and Ubbe are the "first" of the great vikings leaders who are clearly found in history, (not only in Saga songs or drinking tales that evolved through time many times), they established the Danelaw in most of England and important parts of Ireland, many of their actions are documented, that makes them different to Ragnar and Bjorn. For example the "dead man plot" is sometimes atributed to Ragnar and other times to Bjorn. Before them there were only vikings raids, they managed to obtain a true foothold outside of Scandinavia with the Conquest of Northumbria, East Anglia, Mercia, Dublin. I am not saying that Bjorn is not cool, only that the others are the ones who are truly famous of the Lothbrok, with Ivarr being the most famous of the Vikings generals, and Ubbe as the most famous warrior. But we will have to wait and see what happens in the show. BUT the cast has a great influence in this, Ivarr, Hvitsark and Ubbe look like the ugly ones in the family conpared to Bjorn, so obviously Bjorn will have more protagonism than them.

Nothing about ubbe tells me he is a leader. He is a follower. He wasnt a leader in the beginning, he was just the old brother. He wasnt a leader when lagertha took over kattegat. But ivar was as much in charge as björn was. It was because of ivars cunning and tactics that they won, he unofficially took charge in that moment, björn knows this. Just look next episode. Because he can already see that Ivar would lead their people to destruction. Ubbe knows there is are battles that cannot be won by tactics or by having a better commander. Better off to settle on the land that they have legal right to and forge alliances with more powerful English lords. Ivar usurped Ubbe's command and got wiped out by Alfred's army effectively cutting off any chance to settle in England which was the whole point.

Hvitserk himself doesn’t think Ubbe could beat Bjorn, (s4b ep17) in fact even Ubbe decided not to fight Lagertha as soon as Björn was there, same reason the writers left him out of the scene with ragner (who wants to be king, s4Bep11) he’s skewered and butchered berserkers, beaten Mountain Bears one vs one, he beat the English and the French with his father, and raided the Spanish coast where he even saved Hvitserk. Björns probably the greatest Viking Warrior we’ve seen so far in the show, considering for all he’s done since season 1, he’s only just the same age as Ragnar season 1.
P.s. before you drag up wiki history I do know about the the fate of Ragnar sons which is why I’m only going off what we’ve seen in the show, like the fact that the other sons are still young and have to develop like Bjorn

Not really wiki history, there are several novelizations of this story, the one by Bernard Cornwell is my favorite one, but there are several others like The First Warrior or the North Atlantic saga (while they are novels and try to fill some gaps with imagination, they are still based on historical facts), and there is also history (not the one from wiki).
Ivarr and Ubbe are the "first" of the great vikings leaders who are clearly found in history, (not only in Saga songs or drinking tales that evolved through time many times), they established the Danelaw in most of England and important parts of Ireland, many of their actions are documented, that makes them different to Ragnar and Bjorn. For example the "dead man plot" is sometimes atributed to Ragnar and other times to Bjorn.
Before them there were only vikings raids, they managed to obtain a true foothold outside of Scandinavia with the Conquest of Northumbria, East Anglia, Mercia, Dublin.
I am not saying that Bjorn is not cool, only that the others are the ones who are truly famous of the Lothbrok, with Ivarr being the most famous of the Vikings generals, and Ubbe as the most famous warrior.
But we will have to wait and see what happens in the show. BUT the cast has a great influence in this, Ivarr, Hvitsark and Ubbe look like the ugly ones in the family conpared to Bjorn, so obviously Bjorn will have more protagonism than them.

Ivar is the leader. Ubbe is not, people recognize a leader when they see one, thats why people work as his bodyguards. Ubbe is just ivars brother.
yeah ubbe is a more well rounded leader while Ivar is strictly a good general and tactician.
Nothing about ubbe tells me he is a leader. He is a follower. He wasnt a leader in the beginning, he was just the old brother. He wasnt a leader when lagertha took over kattegat. He wasnt a leader when they great army sailed to england. Ivar always took charge, the only reason björn became the leader was because he was yelling and ivar was a cripple. But ivar was as much in charge as björn was. It was because of ivars cunning and tactics that they won, he unofficially took charge in that moment, björn knows this. Just look next episode. Ivar will declare he is the leader of the army. Ubbe wont accept it but they will follow ivar because he IS the leader. Then ubbe will flee to lagertha like the follower he is.

Because he can already see that Ivar would lead their people to destruction. Ubbe knows there is are battles that cannot be won by tactics or by having a better commander. Better off to settle on the land that they have legal right to and forge alliances with more powerful English lords. Ivar usurped Ubbe's command and got wiped out by Alfred's army effectively cutting off any chance to settle in England which was the whole point.
