When I was a young kid in the late 80's early 90's I remember my grandfather had two of these on a homemade "shelf" in the garage. Both were set up for some kind of racing. I haven't thought about them in many many years. He's in his 90's now and I would love to find out what happened to them.

Berkeley also originally fitted their cars with 700cc Royal Enfield Constellation motorcycle engines which must have really shifted.

There's one that has been at the Wendy's car night in Freeport, IL. a couple years ago.
That one has a 4 cycle motorcycle engine in it.
I started commenting before the video even started playing...
This might be the same car.

This car is a delight to look at :) I like these type of unique cars. Is the access to see the cars in the garage free or for a fee like at a museum?

    • @loucostabile
      @loucostabile  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Start Art, There is no fee, however this is in a garage for Collectors to keep their cars, so they let you in if you have a car parked there. Since this is a Partner of the Garage, he allowed me to video. Benefit to the Channel if you can see peoples cars, kinda like a Realtor shows you peoples house you usually can't just walk into. Hope that helped, Lou

There is good news :-) They have a "car show" on site for free one the 1st Sunday's of the month from May through September I believe called "Rise N Drive" from I believe 8am to 11am. The garage will be open to see some great cars. Hope that helps even more. Their website should have more details (which is in the text of this video)

It’s years since I’ve seen a Berkeley - especially one with all four wheels - and this must be the nicest. Sympathetic modifications by the owner have given this Berkeley a new lease of life. Well done ! And full marks to you, Lou, for tracking this rarity down.

I had one, my first car. One of the many Berkeley design quirks was that the brake drums were in unit with the wheels. If one failed to put a cotter pin in the wheel nut it would back off and the wheel would fall off. The car had a single circuit hydraulic system which meant when this happened you had no brakes. This is how this became readily apparent to me:
I was being towed (a common occurrence for Berkeley drivers) by a short rope attached to a HUGE Impala station wagon driven by my mom. The wheel fell off and flew down the road. My mom, hearing the suspension dragging on the road did the sensible thing- she slammed on the brakes. This created an unfavorable set of circumstances for your humble narrator. The back of the car loomed up quite suddenly and I cranked the steering wheel full lock to the left. The rope went taut and swung the car like a pendulum. It came to an abrupt halt, neatly parallel to the tow car facing the opposite direction. The errant wheel narrowly missed an irate old lady pedestrian, who started yelling at me. "Jeeze lady, it's not like I WANTED the wheel to fall off!"

    .
I bought a new one new back in 1957. It turned out to be a total piece of crap. While it was still under warranty I attempted to drive it from Hermosa Beach, CA, to Dallas where I was moving. It made it to El Paso while running on one cylinder in near zero weather. I was freezing my ass off and parked it at a warm motel. I took a bus to Dallas where I later had the piece of junk shipped. to Dallas and sold it for next to nothing.
I had originally planned to buy another Renault 4-CV, which would have easily made it to Dallas in comfort. I wish I had opted for the reliable little 4-CV. I've owned four of them and wish I had one now. They were fun cars.
    .

Easy fix for reverse. Use a good sized starter motor for say a V-8 and a gear on the drive shaft. It will not put drag on the differential or drive shaft. When the Bendex is engaged the starter would be connected to the drive shaft, via the gear, and Bendex, but other wise it will stay unconnected mechanically. I had a problem years ago with my 88 Nova, I discovered it could not only start the car in first gear but was actually pulling the car while starting the engine. The starter was strong enough to move that car, and it was heavier than this one... Add aluminum fins to the exterior, and I am sure to would stay cool enough to serve as a backup motor. My grandfather built my little cousin a go cart the ran on a starter motor, and a couple batteries.

This is just a sweet little dwarf of a car! Love it! It's mini and marvelous!! The style is so pretty n I love the colors, candy colored cuteness. Looks like you could pick it up n hold it and play... fun! The wood look inside is classy n fits because this sounds like a chainsaw rev to me... and that's ok! Excellent vid I look forward to more, they're so enjoyable... onward n upward, n thanks!

These great little cars were built by the Berkeley Coachworks at Biggleswade, Bedfordshire. Berkeley built caravans out of GRP (glass-reinforced plastic), but their business was seasonal, so they took on car manufacture to fill in between their regular business. The SE328 was their main export model, but they later built the B95 & B105 models with the more powerful Royal Enfield 692cc twin-cylinder four-stroke engines, which required a distinctive front "snout" to house the larger motors.

The three-wheeler T60 versions appeared in late 1959 to take advantage of the tax loophole which enabled them to be classed as motorcycles, but I believe that one of the restrictions that these vehicles couldn't have a reverse gear.

From Leo: I have heard one with the original 2 stroke engine. It sounds like a cross between a chain saw and a 2 stroke dirt bike. At idle it sounds like it is internally self destructing, and at full rev it sounds like a chainsaw laboring on a thick log.
