    Man this is one of the coolest N scale routes i've ever seen, and for living in Oregon, I feel like its pretty accurate.

    Love your videos, they've opened up my interest in really learning how railroads operate. I started model railroading as a kid, then life happened and it fell to the wayside. Now that I've got my own kid whose showing interest I wanted to get back into it, and these videos are inspirational for me to learn (and even though she's only 7 and doesn't grasp it yet, she loves watching them too!).

    Great video Dean!! I love your explanations, and the radio "chatter." I understand that you used to work as a rail yardmaster! That must have been very stressful with trains coming and going, and making sure each train has the correct cars!! But, I'm sure it was very rewarding, as you were very important in making sure the loads get to where they're supposed to go on time! Thanks for sharing Dean!

    Awesome layout question where did you get your backgrounds and industry structures?

  • @jeffmarks8200
    @jeffmarks8200 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    How do you handle the loaded / unloaded cars in terms of what to do when they're ready to move back, i.e. log cars from Canyon reload or the mill with chip cars. They go to the yard full, you send empties back to the industry, but are you filling those empties or changing between sessions?
    Videos look great, keep them up.

    • @oregonjointlinemodelrailro4125
      @oregonjointlinemodelrailro4125  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question Jeff. It I haven't operated in a while I'll run the log train in reverse as a pre-check before the next session. I'll often do the same things with some of the trains in staging that have a lot of open lumber loads. But typically there's a fair amount of manual swapping of loaded and empty chip and lumber cars during session prep. I use car tabs so I don't have to worry about tracking car inventory in a software program.

    Amazing detail. One question is How do you accomplish the transition of the trains on the playing of the video that speeds up the movement of the consist through switching or in long runs. This is an amazing experience to allow to see the entire train but it doesn't take away the beauty of the train. Please help me understand your process in the post production of this cool way. Thanks much

    • @oregonjointlinemodelrailro4125
      @oregonjointlinemodelrailro4125  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      thanks Scott. Almost any video editing software allows you to cut a video clip into shorter clips, then you can adjust the shorter clips to just about any speed you want. Mostly I've sped up the action to keep the pace moving but in some cases I actually slowed it down a bit as well.

    I grew up in Burns Oregon, where the Massive Edward Hines Lumber Mill was located, actually in Hines. The Oregon and Northwestern was the Logging Railroad there. But I see you are using Edward Hines as the lumber company. I see a Caboose that is painted like the O&NW. Are you baseing this mill and railroad after the mill in Hines? I would really love to see an HO scale O&NW railroad, with its operations through Burns and to the Seneca mill and back. There are HO scale O&NW Baldwin Engines with the correct paint scheme. I would also love to see it connected to a HO scale Union Pacific Railroad, because the UP Burns Branch was the major railroad to and from the mill.

    • @oregonjointlinemodelrailro4125
      @oregonjointlinemodelrailro4125  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd say it's a little more "inspired by" rather than "based after" the Oregon & Northwestern. On my railroad the O&NE and town of Scanlon (another inspired name from Bend's Brooks-Scanlon mill) are located in the Dayville area. Of course my layout is N scale and the chances of seeing an N scale Baldwin painted in the O&NW scheme are surely non-existent, but I did find a caboose that someone had custom painted. The Oregon Joint Line passes a bit to the west of the town of Burns, but a UP local from Burns performs interchange with the OJL at my town of "Silvies".

    • @oregonjointlinemodelrailro4125
      @oregonjointlinemodelrailro4125  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll assume you meant 07:15. It's a yard transfer that doesn't go out on the main (the two yards are connected by a yard lead). There's no issue here, it's perfectly permissible (or at least it was when I was a prototype yardmaster in the 90's).

    Why not use Locomotives painted in their own paint scheme for the O&NE Logging Railroad rather than use locomotives painted in Paint Scheme for Railroads like:The SP&S or US Army locomotives?

    • @oregonjointlinemodelrailro4125
      @oregonjointlinemodelrailro4125  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll get there eventually - but building a layout this large completely by myself I have to prioritize and doing a custom paint scheme for the O&NE is about 38th on the list of the most important things I need to do. In the meantime there is precedence for what I'm doing - the Oregon, California, & Eastern Railroad, an eastern Oregon logger which is a significant influence for the O&NE, used GN and SP power pretty exclusively (from what I understand) during the era I'm modeling.

    There was no reason under the sun that will justify your childish speeding up of the switching. It would have be a real great switching ops video instead of looking clownish. Its hard enough to get people to take N Scale seriously and this doesn't help.

    • @oregonjointlinemodelrailro4125
      @oregonjointlinemodelrailro4125  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      thanks for your comments Brakie. The primary reason for the speedup is that I'm compressing two hours worth of activity into a 15 minute video. Another is that my videos aren't "switching videos" - they're yard management instruction videos. I have more than two decades of experience as a prototype switchman, yardmaster, trainmaster, and well beyond and the focus of my videos is not on mundane switching tasks that anyone can learn in a few hours - it's on how a railroad manager thinks and interacts with other employees. My operating crew is mostly comprised of actual railroaders (all the way up to Vice President level) who have no problem taking my N scale operations seriously (and really like my videos!).

    • @brakie44820
      @brakie44820 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I notice a couple of rule infraction but,what do I know? I was a brakeman for 9 1/2 years.
      Still the speed up on the switching part was uncalled for. There are other ways to trim videos.

    • @oregonjointlinemodelrailro4125
      @oregonjointlinemodelrailro4125  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks for your opinion - will keep it in mind. Considering this is a logging railroad set in 1969 I'm not sure they would've even had a rule book to violate!

    • @matthenard
      @matthenard 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      brakie44820 the only thing childish, clownish and uncalled for is your comment. I looked for your informative, prototypical, and educational switching videos and couldn't find them, hum.

    • @brakie44820
      @brakie44820 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Still looks childish..I have switched enough prototype cars to justify my comments. How many have you switched? Videos like this is why N Scale is still mocked..
