This was brilliant. You need to work for Brother. No one there was able to give me any guidance. I just got my SDX 125e after owning a CM350 for 4 years. The SDX, when attempting to cut very small, intricate designs, has been chewing up or ejecting pieces of my design from various thickness of cardstock, even as thin as 80lb. These were the same designs I cut successfully on the CM350. I assumed it was something in the settings so called Brother for advice on altering them. I was told I needed to call my local Sew n Vac (not sure why as I bought my machine from Amazon). They told me that if I didn’t buy it from them they weren’t responsible but they didn’t think the SDX125 would cut cardstock. (I’m not kidding!). I haven’t tried altering the defaults yet but I’m confident I can now feel better about spending all this money on a machine that so far hasn’t performed as well as my old one. You are such a gift! Many thanks.
Wow! I cut mostly cardstock. They must have had a real rookie answering the phone that day. Thanks for your comment. I hope you will take some of my courses and join my FB group. Thanks for a great video - love stencils so now I can make my own with a variety of shapes. Doing the pattern interval was a super learning curve for me too. TFS . xo
Thanks Barb, they really do add that extra touch of texture. I want to share how to use the stencils with embossing paste too because that makes the cards 3D. Glad you are watching.
❤❤Thank you for your time and sharing your knowledge! I am trying the confetti tip. Your tutorials are full of so much information. I watch them, put them on hold and try them as you do the project. Keep sharing you are a blessing to those of us that are fumbling through this adventure. 😂😂😅😅❤❤
This is great! I'm still learning from you a year after getting my machine! I have loved it and put it to good use. Your tutorials have been so helpful. Thank you.
Congratulations Kim. 🎇I’m not surprised you have so many followers. You help so many of us learn how to use the scan n cut machines, had I not found you my machine was going to be packed up & sent back, I was so frustrated. I’ll bet I’m not the only one you saved. You teach your methods so well. I’ve watched other scan n cut videos and non can compare with yours, keep up the great work. Many thanks.
Thank you so very much Kim. I am one of those people who had asked for this info on stencils. So excited and saving it in my Scan n cut folder. Thank you, thank you.
Your Wish is my Command. LOL. I get a lot of requests for stencils and I was searching my OWN TH-cam Channel and had a hard time finding all of my stencil videos. I have a lot of them but I was calling them stamping masks, etc. Therefore, I wanted to make a new video and have Creating Stencils in the title. Glad you like it.
Thanks so much . Just tried the shape you had and got 300 shapes and came out perfect and I used the link you gave me, You are a great teacher and keep up the good work.
Kim, Congratulations on reaching another milestone. You do a wonderful job teaching the Scan n Cut. Whenever I have the chance, and someone wants to know where they can go to learn more on the Scan n Cut, I always tell them about you.
Hi Kimberly, Love how you created the stencils, very practical and can be used over and over again, and the cards are all so lovely, well done TFS, Cheers Anna.
Anna, I am glad you like this tutorial. I love how we can use our machines for so much more than paper. I'm still making cards with the same color and then I can just wash off the ink with ease. If I have small stencils for stamping masks, I just store them right inside of the case with the stamps.
Thanks MaryAnn! I appreciate your comment. You get a heart for my tutorial being the "best" - I try not to compare myself but I am happy to hear this was so helpful.
Another GREAT tutorial Kim. I love watching and learning new things from you. I already have a idea of a shape I want to use for the stencil. Thanks again.
Debbie, that is great you have a specific idea in mind already. I love ❤️ having so many built in shapes because we create so many fun things without even using Canvas Workspace. Thanks for watching.
Right on Donna! There are so many great uses for the ScanNCut. I love making stamping masks and stencils. You can just wash them off and you are good to go.
OMG! I will be making my own stencils from now on, so that means more money saved! Awesome informative video, and very easy to follow, especially as I have only had my SNC machine two days! Already I have learnt so much. Many thanks -stay well:-)
Thanks so much for the very helpful tutorial. May I ask what is the thickness of the Mylar you used here? I am looking at buying a SDX 1250. Description says that the max depth it can cut is 3mm. So I am a bit confused here. I was hoping to use it in 7mm or 6mm Mylars. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks
Thanks so much for this tutorial! I love stencils for blending colors and making backgrounds. When you went through the shapes, I saw one that I'll probably try for making a rainbow. You always get me excited to try something new!
That is awesome Polly. You can have fun making rainbows 🌈 similar to the one in last month’s Paper Pumpkin Kit. If you sponge color all of the layers, I think it would be even easier to line up than photo polymer stamps. You are very welcome! Glad you are watching.
You can use your finger as a stylus. It isn't like a multi-touch touch screen display but you can use your finger to drag and drop objects and to swipe up and down the selections instead of using the arrow keys. Run the mylar through a Xyron cold press lamination machine to adhere printed paper to it with different types of adhesive cartridges. Then you can make sturdier confetti. Maybe add some holographic film and you're cooking with gas :) Lots of cool ways to make custom, cool looking confetti and other projects.

I only use my CM 350 for cutting out stamped images and I’m still struggling with certain things. Even when I use your pencil trick sometimes the 350 will cut inside some of my images? But because of you I actually had enough courage to try it and start using my machine! Congratulations congratulations on your 19,000 subscribers! Hi, Kim. I'm not sure which video(s) to watch to figure out my scan n cut issue. I want to cut a rectangle that is 5.25 x 4.0 inches, and inside that rectangle, I want to cut out 6 small squares, equally spaced within the rectangle. HELP?
You will want to check out my Canvas Workspace A to Z course because I cover alignment and so much more. Here are the intro videos to all of my courses. thepaperedchef.com/brother-scanncut-courses
Hi Kim, great video as per usual, I have the old version cm900, think you was saying that you was going to give us the settings for cutting Mylar using the CM range? Not sure you had a link or going to do other video on this subject, thanks 😊 jake
Jayc, thanks for watching. I did include the settings for cutting Mylar in the description. There are also links to related tutorials I created with the CM350. For the CM models, I used the Deep Cut blade for cutting Mylar.
Norine, thanks for your comment. Because the Autoblade is used, it determined the depth and thinks it needs to do another cut. I am not sure if I can outsmart it any other way. I wish I had a manual blade for this machine.
I was wondering the same thing and thought perhaps if you don’t set the cut pressure so high it wouldn’t feel the need to make two passes. Or do I have that backwards?
Hi, I'm a scan'n'cut novice I have just bought the basic CM300 machine and wondered if there is a way to make an age card where the actual number is the card back and front?
Congratulations! Thank you so much for this video. Can you do a video showing how to make a stencil using words with the CM350? I need to make a stencil for my hubby’s tools with his name on the tools. Can it be done with the CM350? Would love if you could do a video on that, as you are so informative and easy to follow.
Vicki, you have to keep in mind that letters are going to look funny with a stencil. I usually don't ever use stencils for this purpose. You are much better off using vinyl and transfer tape. Then, you take off the part you want to use for a stencil. I have lots of tutorials on cutting vinyl. th-cam.com/video/WiOt97_-zpk/w-d-xo.html
Papered Chef thank you so much. I will watch this video. As i would much rather use my CM350 than my silhouette cameo. My CM350 is so much easier to use with all your wonderful videos. My hubby really wants a stencil so he can put his names on his tools for work, and the videos i have watched using my silhouette cameo make it look so complicated.Thank you for all you do. I so enjoy your videos.
We just got a SDX1250 and was wondering, how long do the mats and knives generally last? The machine came with a standard and a light sticky mat and i wonder do we need to get a spare one? Same for the autoknife, how is your experience with this?
Congrats! It all depends on how often you cut. Mats need replacing before blades. Here’s a link. Just watch my maintenance tutorials to get a longer life from your blade. amzn.to/3HjKLxb
Can I create stencils on a 350 BROTHER scan n Cut machine? I never thought of making our own stencils. Thank You for the tutorial. I want to try it. Where do you get the mylar?
Jenniece, oh YES, of course you can create the stencils with the CM350. Here is one of my tutorials on that. th-cam.com/video/0ZgDeCnnCgA/w-d-xo.html Here is a link to the Mylar sheets I use: Mylar Stencil Sheets: amzn.to/3f0sp43
Excellent tutorial!! I did it along with you and love the results. Would love to see how you create different stencils either using the Canvas workspace or by combining shapes. Congratualations on your milestone of 19,000+ subscribers. You go girl!!!!!
Are there different thicknesses of mylar sheets and what other materials could be used for making stencils that will hold up over time with repeated use? I plan on getting the Brother Scan N Cut in a couple of months (DX125). Thanks for all your tutorials on using a cutting machine. Do I need a special separate blade for cutting through mylar?
HI Kelley, Oh YES, there are so many thicknesses of Mylar. Things like Portfolio Covers are too thick, but I tried them too. I recommend Mylar because it is easy to wash. If you have the CM model like this, you need a deep cut blade. If not, just use the Autoblade with the SDX. Thanks Elsa! I appreciate you watching. Growth was so slow for the first couple of years and then it my Crafty Friends came in droves. I’m glad you are one of them.
This video was featuring the SDX125 and for that, I used the Standard Blade. If you are cutting stencils with the CM models, you can use the Deep Cut blade. Here is a tutorial on that. th-cam.com/video/vpCOSG2pb2c/w-d-xo.html
I use a completely different cutter normally, a Silver Bullet Platinum - but I have cut quite a lot of stencils. (I happened to get a second hand Scan Cut the other day, just to play with but that's another story. You may or may not know that there is an alternative to traditional stencil material which is a lot cheaper and that is binder covers. They come in different weights but I bought 100 of 240 microns (thicker) A4 binder covers for around 10 euros....Cuts well too.
Oh yes, I’m familiar with the Silver Bullet and used one in the past. Heavy duty. Oh I have used about 20 different materials for stencils. I bought this in bulk and it’s the gift that keeps on giving because I still have so much Mylar. Some of my viewers use cutting mats from the Dollar Tree. Anything goes while making a stencil. My materials are pretty cheap. I make 4 stencils for less than a dollar.
@@PaperedChef Great! The Platinum is a large double head version, so the Scan cut feels like a baby one! I too have used all sorts for making stencils, depending on what I wanted to use them for. I'm still wondering if to stencil a colour shifting design on the Scan Cut :)
Oh yes, of course. This would make a fine holiday present for yourself. Here is my link for when you are ready to make a purchase. Brother ScanNCut DX, SDX125: amzn.to/2X3HiKw
Thanks for the great tutorial and information! I am new to your channel and really appreciate all your expertise. I noticed that your Amazon link to the stencil material is for 7 mil thickness . Is this the thickest mylar / stencil material the SNC SDX125E can cut?
Thanks for the sub! Julie, that is the thickest I have tried. I think if you go any higher up while you are sponge coloring, you are not going to be able to get very close to the edges. If you want if for something else, try the thicker one. Give it a try. There are specs you can check on the Brother site but there is no substitute for experimentation.
Thanks so much for this! I've been looking at mylar sheets on Amazon but wasn't really sure which ones to get as far as the thickness. And I definitely wanted to sort of semi-transparent white instead of clear. And also the speed and cut pressure and all that kind of stuff. I do have a question. I'd like to make one with hearts but have every other line of the hearts offset. Is there a way to do that or would it just be a nightmare trying to do every line and offsetting every other line? I have the dx125
Thanks Debadoo. You can add offsets to as many hearts as you want. You just wouldn't use the process I showed. That is because when you use a Pattern Interval, all of the items have to be the same. You can add hearts, duplicate them, add offsets to some, etc. but then you can use the Auto Layout feature to fit everything on the mat.
@@PaperedChef Thanks! I haven't really gotten to play with my machine much due to lack of space to set it up, but it's good to know that I can do that.
Chef, I believe I’ve asked before, but I haven’t heard from you, I know you’re so busy & probably just haven’t had the time, I apologize. Do you have, or does someone have a layout of all the ScanNcut icons with their names & or something that tells what they do?
Thanks Karla, you can use any links to Amazon and then search for other items. Here are the exact links. This is for the CM models. You don't need a Deep Cut Blade if you have Autoblade. • Brother ScanNCut Deep Cut Blade Holder: amzn.to/2VyKekI • Brother ScanNCut Deep Cut Blade: amzn.to/2DBKR2q
Thanks Amy, I knew how to look for it on Amazon, I just wanted to give you the affiliate tip. Thank you so much. Will you have your latest class on sale soon? On disability my money is a lot tighter than it used to be. Gotta take advantage of the sales. I really learned so much from the previous classes.
Anne, you are fast and one step ahead of me. I am writing the description now. Here is a link to the one I used. I bought a large pack of these and use them all of the time. Mylar Stencil Sheets: amzn.to/3f0sp43
I enjoy what I did learn from your video, but it was obvious you didn't think it through before you made it. There was WAY TOO MUCH repeating. Also, if you aren't using an item in the video you shouldn't mention in your tutorial. I am just criticing the video, not saying it was bad, but it was hard to watch. You could have gotten you tutorial into 30 mins if you would stay focused on what you are explaining. I don't usually watch tutorials over 30 minutes, but I just purchased the new scan and cut and wanted a few pointers. Like I said what you were trying to create in your tutorial was good, but it was too helicoptery. But thank you for they lesson. I did learn something.

Another great tutorial. You have helped me so much in navigating my DX machine.
You are inspirational!
Thanks so much Julie. Glad you enjoyed this.
so If I buy the deep cut blade holder, is there also a blade included or can I use the blade that i have.. i guess the auto blade.
Subbed...you are now v close to 30k!
Hi, which is the recommended thickness? I have a Brother scanncut sdx225
Your videos are always so awesome thank you
Does the machine automatically do a double cut or is there a setting that you can press to do 1 pass
Congratulations!!🍾🎉
Thanks Imelda! I appreciate that.
Here is one of my tutorials on that. th-cam.com/video/0ZgDeCnnCgA/w-d-xo.html
Here is a link to the Mylar sheets I use: Mylar Stencil Sheets: amzn.to/3f0sp43
Excellent tutorial!! I did it along with you and love the results. Would love to see how you create different stencils either using the Canvas workspace or by combining shapes. Congratualations on your milestone of 19,000+ subscribers. You go girl!!!!!
Thanks so much! I appreciate your comment. I keep on growing and "try" to keep up with comments.

I created some stencils in canvas workspace. Can I cut Mylar with standard blade if I adjust cut speed and cut pressure?
This video was featuring the SDX125 and for that, I used the Standard Blade. If you are cutting stencils with the CM models, you can use the Deep Cut blade. Here is a tutorial on that. th-cam.com/video/vpCOSG2pb2c/w-d-xo.html
How do u understand the bridges, that need to hold the design together. This is where I mess up . Thank you
I use a completely different cutter normally, a Silver Bullet Platinum - but I have cut quite a lot of stencils.
What is the product called we are to use ,and where to buy ,thank you from Aussie
Linda, the material I used was Mylar. Here is the link to it. It is also in the description of this video. Mylar Stencil Sheets: amzn.to/2GExvTI
Thanks!
You are very welcome. Thanks for the Super Sticker!
Is this a good machine for a beginner?
@@PaperedChef Thanks! I was thinking in terms of using texture paste and it's always easier with a little thicker stencil.
Congratulations! I've learned a lot with your tutorials.
Thanks Sonia, I am glad you learned new things and I will keep the Tips & Tricks coming.
Thank you so much!!!
Just have a quick question that you may have answered in the video. What is the thickest Mylar this machine can cut through??
Not sure what the thickest is but I’ve cut 7mm no problem. Use a Deep Cut Blade with CM models.
Chef, I believe I’ve asked before, but I haven’t heard from you, I know you’re so busy & probably just haven’t had the time, I apologize. Do you have, or does someone have a layout of all the ScanNcut icons with their names & or something that tells what they do?
Do you have a link for the deep cut blade? I would like for you to get a commission off my purchase.
Thanks Karla, you can use any links to Amazon and then search for other items. Here are the exact links. This is for the CM models. You don't need a Deep Cut Blade if you have Autoblade.

Wonderful tutorial! I am not finding the link to the mylar or settings. Maybe a screenshot?
