Here's a brilliant aspect of this arc - in episode 109 Carlie and Ange predicted that Gon would be the only party to stray from the plan, for selfish reasons. But Togashi surprised us - in episode 116 Gon actually wanted to stick to the plan...for selfish reasons, because he wanted vengeance against Pitou. It was Killua and some others from the team (Netero, Zeno) that strayed from the plan, and let Pitou heal Komugi. Togashi intentionally subverted expectations here, and did a great job of it.

Im pretty sure Kite was talking about the fact that Gon wouldnt be able to carry out the mission of killing Ants that care for its comrades, but still pose a real threat to his and other humans lives, thus putting himself and others at risk.

Well said! It's such a good way to remind you that he's still a kid. He's quick to label evil and good without looking at the complexities of a person. It's easier especially if it serves a narrative he favours!

When he can't understand the motives or methods someone uses, it makes him angry. He acts like he's got some kind of moral disposition against such people, but it's nothing of the sort. He's just scouring for a way to condemn them so he doesn't have to understand them. He always extends understanding to his allies but entirely neglects to do so for anyone else. The only reason he has any kind of pseudo-moral position against the Troupe or the Chimera Ants is partially because they don't follow _his_ way of living, but mostly because they've made themselves his enemies. If his allies behaved in _the exact_ same way as any of his enemies, Gon would not condemn them much less bear the kind of unbridled rage he's shown towards Pitou or have any sort of reasoning to fight them as he did the Phantom Troupe. Gon is not a morally complicated character, nor is he any sort of hero. He's so selfish that he's willing to permanently disfigure himself AND his allies to accomplish his goals. He only gets a pass from the fanbase because of his affable personality. He can watch a total stranger being eviscerated with an honest to God smile on his face... as long as his ally is winning. If it was the other way around, he start in with his disgust for their actions. Every character in this show is an immensely flawed person, and Gon is no different.

I'd describe Pitou as the most loyal of the guards. Youpi's loyalty is simple and without thought, while Shaia is jealous and wants to preserve his ideal of what the King should be. Pitou is loyal to the King, no matter how he changes.
That was kind of shown when he asked them about his name weren’t it? Pouf just called him king, youpi wasn’t smart enough to answer and pitou said for him to choose whichever name he thinks is best.
Gon's rage is one for the history books. The buildup to his break down was done so incredibly well. When Gon just dismisses off Killua's pain it just broke my heart. There's something about Killua, when he gets heartbroken it hits so much harder than it has any right to be. Love your reactions..You guys are one of the best reactors to HxH!
also important to note about shoot and knuckle, is that they are kinda like hannes and eren. hannes said to eren, your mother died because you lacked the strength, but it was because i lacked the courage! gon and killua had the heart but needed the strength. shoot and knuckle are very capable, but shoot was a coward and knuckle is a softy. but now they’ve finally gained the courage and tenacity to put their lives on the line for the first time in their life, and this is how their newfound rock hard resolve is treated by youpi

Gons extreme love for Kite is so underdeveloped. It's just something you have to accept. However, it results in some great moments. I think everybody notices but they're too shocked by the fact that Cheetu just got demolished to comment on it. I was the same way when I saw it for the first time, my mind registered it but then completely forgot about it when I saw Silva.
I have to say that you guys are absolutely brilliant when it comes to understanding the complex story telling and character writing. I've seen so many reactors just get hype and really ignore that build up and complexity but both of you are amazing at explaining it and expressing your POV.
Ep 116 for me is one of the saddest episodes I've watched. I'm sad for Killua for not reaching Gon, Gon for losing Kite, Pitou for having to beg to heal Komugi and Komugi for being the most innocent victim in the situation
Also, its true. The whole situation didn't mean 2 shits to Killua. Killua never cared for Kite. Literally the only reason he was here was because Gon was here. In this scenario Killua and Pitou are the same where they don't actually care about Komugi or Kite but they have a duty to fulfill
There was a timer in the manga for the initial fight with Youpi. Shoot flying on his hand to fight Youpi then collapsing was the first 22 seconds of the mission.
I mean take Gon's perspective. If someone kills your friends or family and makes them into a puppet just for fun but you have to wait and trust them because they have a family too. It's kinda stupid. If wasn't because of what Killua said, Gon should kill Pitou right away.
But there’s no reason to to kill Pitou right away, especially after Pitou broke her arm and offered even more injuries in order to prove she’s not lying. All attacking Pitou now would do is kill Komugi.

And I said Gon should kill Pitou right away just to poof the point that Gon has the right to do so much worse. It's not fair to think Gon is the bad guy when he still doing the best he can.

Put the life of someone unrelated to him personally for his own goal - the EXACT same thing he was chiding Chrollo and by extension the Troupe for. Thats Gon's critical character flaw, as long as the person or action is either interesting or valuable to Gon, he is happy to accept it (hence why he was so amicable to Binolt the scissor guy Greed Island because he helped them get stronger and never calls out Hisoka for his killings because Hisoka is a goal to surpass and helps him get stronger) but cannot fathom that someone he has deemed "wrong" Can have their own connections or reasons. Its why he always gets angry when the Troupe and later Pitou don't fit into his childish worldview. Of course he is a child so there isn't anything inherently too wrong with it but it is an incredibly dangerous worldview (something even Kite noticed after that Armadillo fight) and the series just shows how warped Gon can get because of this. Just because Gon has a valid grudge against Pitou (no matter how undercooked his bond with Kite is even by the manga standards), doesn't mean that all his actions are ok.

Back in York New city, that guy already said that Gon's problem is that Gon didn't have a moral in judging people. And he still didn't have one now. But that doesn't mean he didn't care for his friends. He runs back for his friends to help them escape Hisoka in the Hunter exam no matter how undercooked his bond with Kurapika and Leorio is in episode 5 even by the manga standards. He jumps off the ship to save a stranger in episode 1. Now he goes to get his friend back, the one friend who lost his arm because he tried to save them. And you say he's the bad guy? And what he does is wrong? The series is trying to bring readers to see both sides of the story. But a lot of people just remember the last side they see and forget what happened in the first place. The mistake they make is forgetting how long this series can go, and how short-memory people are.

i feel you a bit about zeno and killua, but i see it like this; zeno expects killua to be the head but finds it necessary to let him grow freely with new experiences. but at the same time, he allows obstacles to get in killua’s way in order to contribute to his development and such. zeno himself could have never met a friend such as netero if he was monitored and confined his whole life. killua’s talent was likely assessed at age 4 or 5, and then his path for the head of the zoldyck household was likely verified by zeno and silva when killua was around 9 or so shortly before killua enlists in the hunter exam. so zeno has a lot of hopes for killua and knows his capabilities, but he also understands that if killua dies or gets himself into trouble, he’s gotta deal with that like a man, considering how mature and capable zeno knows killua is. thus, when he figures he’s removed illumi’s needle, it’s just further proof that killua is progressing and zeno expects as much from the one he declared had the potential to be the head of the zoldycks. the true morals or “code” of the zoldycks is a bit more noble than we are let on. silva respects friendship, and zeno is close friends with netero and even still looks up to him in the present day. killua has that sort of nobility that is missing from the other zoldycks, except for the heads of the family: zeno, silva, and eventually killua
Also, that moment at the start, when Pitou looks over her shoulder to see Gon is meant as a parallel when they first met. When she jumped at kite and they crossed eyes for the first time
Remember when gon loved animals, yet now he’s referring to pitou as ‘this thing’ I understand why but Gon’s downfall was so sad yet so masterful cause it makes soooo much sense

I hope at the end of this you guys watch the edit of these few episodes (not necessarily react, but in your own time,) which shows the first 2 minutes of the palace invasion in real time. It really is insane how much is happening at once.

killua didnt actually "leave" gon. with the way things mellowed down, he was assured neither gon or pitou would do smt stupid and break their promise if they wanted to achieve their goals. so killua moved to help out with other missions

The voice acting for Gon in this episode is some of the best I've seen in anime. Its up their with Eren from AOT and Subaru from Re: Zero. Give me chills every time
Gons rage is not only reasoned by his actual relationship with kite (that is cut short), but rather his only connection to his father being kite and his guilt. As mentioned in the episode where gon first meets Melereon, and he says he would not be able to forgive himself.
Gon's rage is one of the best or the best out of all anime rages. The VA, the effects, the animation, the moment everything is so good. It's almost perfect other than the fact that the reason behind it is so shallow for him to go that far. The anime didn't give enough moments for Gon to go that far for Kite.

I feel like as men we tend to empathize more with the warrior's spirit, the feeling of being dishonored and the strong urge to correct that any way we can. Sometimes, there truly are things more important than the world.
Fun fact: the “since it means nothing to you” line is a slight mistranslation. The actual translation is along the lines of: “because this is none of your business” or “because this has nothing to do with you” Basically, Gon is telling Killua this: “this is my personal mission and you need to stay out of it”
I don't know if it was a different translation or I am just misremembering it but I also recall the line being "because Kite meant nothing to you" or something of the like.

If I may add, I specially consider brilliant how killua, was able not only to remain calm but come up with some huge insights. Im sorry Gon lovers. If I'm honest, I don't think our boy would have any chance against pitou.... however, it is quite impressive how gon would prove to be much scarier than any other monster, representing how a “LITTLE ANT” can have a much more THREATENING precense than a dinosaur like pitou.

One thing that people forget about this conflict between Gon and Pitou is that the reason for Gon's anger is not just because of Kite. Of course it's the main reason, but one thing that the anime shows throughout the journey is that Gon is an extremely selfish character. Remember the times he was selfish against Hisoka, Genthuru, Razor or even the Troupe. The issue is that in addition to Pitou killing Kaito, she hurt Gon's ego. So much so that we see him cry with rage for recognizing his weakness in the training arc against Knuckle. This, to me, is what makes his anger make sense, and of course, he feels guilty about Kaito's death, since he believed that Kaito wouldn't die if he was alone
Pretty sure he was talking about the moment Meruem walked past him and Netero. There's no reason his time would be compressed when Netero was attacking Pitou.
Good catch Ange. I have to say you are one of the very few reactors or should I have to say very few viewers that I have seen who can catch this early that ants are being more humans and humans are more monster-like.
I thought the build up, the voice acting, the drama of the situation and not knowing what Gon was going to do in that situation made for an awesome episode. Seeing Pitou beg after all the chaos she caused early on. I thought the writing was really good in this episode with how togashi turned the tables and made the ants seem less monstrous than the humans, because of some of the human experiences theyve recently gone through. It remains to be seen if it will be my favourite though. I think i preferred 112 and 113 more.

For me it's the tension the episode brings, it was like Pitou and Killua were trying to disarm a bomb that could go off any second. Not my favourite episode, but it was my favourite during the arc until this point. Also when I first watched the series I was invested mostly in what Killua and Gon were doing, and Morel cause he's really cool (edit - Also was invested in the King and Netero of course too) - but the other characters I was a lot less invested in, with my impatience magnified a fair bit because I was watching the series weekly as it came out. That initial bias likely has forever stained my perception of the arc.

Thats Gon's critical character flaw, as long as the person or action is either interesting or valuable to Gon, he is happy to accept it (hence why he was so amicable to Binolt the scissor guy Greed Island because he helped them get stronger and never calls out Hisoka for his killings because Hisoka is a goal to surpass and helps him get stronger) but cannot fathom that someone he has deemed "wrong" Can have their own connections or reasons. Its why he always gets angry when the Troupe and later Pitou don't fit into his childish worldview.
Of course he is a child so there isn't anything inherently too wrong with it but it is an incredibly dangerous worldview (something even Kite noticed after that Armadillo fight) and the series just shows how warped Gon can get because of this.
Just because Gon has a valid grudge against Pitou (no matter how undercooked his bond with Kite is even by the manga standards), doesn't mean that all his actions are ok.

That's right, the one guy who still thinks he can talk to the ants even right before he gets in the portal. Do you really think Gon is stupid enough to think Knuckle will ever kill an innocent blind girl? The threat is real only because Peto doesn't know Knuckle. Back in York New city, that guy already said that Gon's problem is that Gon didn't have a moral in judging people. And he still didn't have one now. But that doesn't mean he didn't care for his friends. He runs back for his friends to help them escape Hisoka in the Hunter exam no matter how undercooked his bond with Kurapika and Leorio is in episode 5 even by the manga standards. He jumps off the ship to save a stranger in episode 1. Now he goes to get his friend back, the one friend who lost his arm because he tried to save them. And you say he's the bad guy? And what he does is wrong? The series is trying to bring readers to see both sides of the story. But a lot of people just remember the last side they see and forget what happened in the first place. The mistake they make is forgetting how long this series can go, and how short-memory people are.

i feel you a bit about zeno and killua, but i see it like this; zeno expects killua to be the head but finds it necessary to let him grow freely with new experiences. but at the same time, he allows obstacles to get in killua’s way in order to contribute to his development and such. zeno himself could have never met a friend such as netero if he was monitored and confined his whole life. killua’s talent was likely assessed at age 4 or 5, and then his path for the head of the zoldyck household was likely verified by zeno and silva when killua was around 9 or so shortly before killua enlists in the hunter exam. so zeno has a lot of hopes for killua and knows his capabilities, but he also understands that if killua dies or gets himself into trouble, he’s gotta deal with that like a man, considering how mature and capable zeno knows killua is. thus, when he figures he’s removed illumi’s needle, it’s just further proof that killua is progressing and zeno expects as much from the one he declared had the potential to be the head of the zoldycks. the true morals or “code” of the zoldycks is a bit more noble than we are let on. silva respects friendship, and zeno is close friends with netero and even still looks up to him in the present day. killua has that sort of nobility that is missing from the other zoldycks, except for the heads of the family: zeno, silva, and eventually killua

Carlie was right, everything Gon Knuckle and Shoot did came from their human feelings, and we are able to feel for the ants now only bc they're showing a positive side of human feelings (even though the loyalty they have comes originally from their ant nature, but the human mix makes it more nuanced/complex as we go)... but they're still very much ants first and foremost and Pitou was 100% loyal and 100% lying... even though like you realized she didn't remember who Kite was, she still would lie bc the King's order is the priority and she's willing to die for it

killua didnt actually "leave" gon. with the way things mellowed down, he was assured neither gon or pitou would do smt stupid and break their promise if they wanted to achieve their goals. so killua moved to help out with other missions

Gons rage is not only reasoned by his actual relationship with kite (that is cut short), but rather his only connection to his father being kite and his guilt. As mentioned in the episode where gon first meets Melereon, and he says he would not be able to forgive himself.

Gon's rage is one of the best or the best out of all anime rages. The VA, the effects, the animation, the moment everything is so good. It's almost perfect other than the fact that the reason behind it is so shallow for him to go that far. The anime didn't give enough moments for Gon to go that far for Kite.

17:30 I've noticed that in most of these reactions, most women tend to find Knucle and Shoot's attitude dumb and irresponsible while most men, while they might not justify it, they just get it. I feel like as men we tend to empathize more with the warrior's spirit, the feeling of being dishonored and the strong urge to correct that any way we can. Sometimes, there truly are things more important than the world.
Fun fact: the “since it means nothing to you” line is a slight mistranslation. The actual translation is along the lines of: “because this is none of your business” or “because this has nothing to do with you”
Basically, Gon is telling Killua this: “this is my personal mission and you need to stay out of it”
I don't know if it was a different translation or I am just misremembering it but I also recall the line being "because Kite meant nothing to you" or something of the like.

So, basically Gon excluded Killua from the mission to defeat Pitou meaning that Gon was willing to go down in flames by himself
Funnily enough, the dub got the line right. I think dub Gon says something along the lines of "since its not your fight"
I don't really see the difference. The line we have can easily be taken that way and I always felt that's what Gon was saying anyway.
If I may add, I specially consider brilliant how killua, was able not only to remain calm but come up with some huge insights. Im sorry Gon lovers. If I'm honest, I don't think our boy would have any chance against pitou.... however, it is quite impressive how gon would prove to be much scarier than any other monster, representing how a “LITTLE ANT” can have a much more THREATENING precense than a dinosaur like pitou.

One thing that people forget about this conflict between Gon and Pitou is that the reason for Gon's anger is not just because of Kite. Of course it's the main reason, but one thing that the anime shows throughout the journey is that Gon is an extremely selfish character. Remember the times he was selfish against Hisoka, Genthuru, Razor or even the Troupe. The issue is that in addition to Pitou killing Kaito, she hurt Gon's ego. So much so that we see him cry with rage for recognizing his weakness in the training arc against Knuckle. This, to me, is what makes his anger make sense, and of course, he feels guilty about Kaito's death, since he believed that Kaito wouldn't die if he was alone

Pretty sure he was talking about the moment Meruem walked past him and Netero. There's no reason his time would be compressed when Netero was attacking Pitou.

I thought the build up, the voice acting, the drama of the situation and not knowing what Gon was going to do in that situation made for an awesome episode. Seeing Pitou beg after all the chaos she caused early on. I thought the writing was really good in this episode with how togashi turned the tables and made the ants seem less monstrous than the humans, because of some of the human experiences theyve recently gone through. It remains to be seen if it will be my favourite though. I think i preferred 112 and 113 more.
I'd be interested to know what your favorite is. This episode is my favorite in the show for the reasons Carlie and Ang said below.

Just realise that other people have higher expactations to shows and HxH delivers in both ways.
For me it's the tension the episode brings, it was like Pitou and Killua were trying to disarm a bomb that could go off any second. Not my favourite episode, but it was my favourite during the arc until this point.
Also when I first watched the series I was invested mostly in what Killua and Gon were doing, and Morel cause he's really cool (edit - Also was invested in the King and Netero of course too) - but the other characters I was a lot less invested in, with my impatience magnified a fair bit because I was watching the series weekly as it came out. That initial bias likely has forever stained my perception of the arc.
Voice acting was great this episode, but there is even better to come and you aint even seen what Gon is capable of yet.
