  • And they're off! Under the brutal desert sun, our competitors encounter their first roadblocks. Extreme heat, hazardous winds, and brush fires are all signs that the Australian Outback means business. But the dangers of experimental tech make it a lot worse - and a spontaneous car battery fire spells disaster for one team.

About the temperature problem on minute 15:10, they could place a polarized film in the front of the cockpit and a reflective one on top that also covers the back.
That would definitely reduce cockpit temperature a lot while not adding any significant weight to the vehicle.
The reflective material could also send ricochet photons to the solar panels.

9:55 When racing in the outback, your car needs temperature level checking.
It can easily go up to 30C or even reach 50C in the extreme dry areas with only desert.
Also, a small air inlet can help by cooling the electronics AND the driver,
and if and when properly placed, it won't cost much. In fact, the lowered need for
things like cooling fans and such, may offset this.

I can see many of the teams don't understand how insanely hot it gets in the Australian outback. Also the testing and certification procedure seems to be flawed when it comes to catering to these extreme temps. It is very unsafe to have a driver on public roads sitting in a cockpit with poor ventilation at over 45c. Also they should not be allowing high density lithium batteries to be uncooled in such extremes. You are literally sitting on a death trap.
