  • Here are a few tips for building a safe and winning Soapbox Derby race car. the sooapbox derby is a fun event for the kids, and you should be sure they are safe in the car, and they have a good shot at winning. Make sure you build an effective braking system, with the brake lever in the center of the car. If the soapbox derby car's brake is on the side of the car, it can cause the car to spin out and crash. Polish the axle and use TriFlow lubricant on the axle and bearings. Put in an effective seat belt. If you plan to put extra weight in the car, make sure you do it as safely as possible. Make sure you align the wheels to go perfectly straight. Take very good care of the wheels. Don't let the kids drag the car sideways and scrape up the rubber tires.

      You should start a soapbox racing team yourself over there, whenever they let you guys go outside again.

    If you want to add weight, put it middle, and low down. Maybe building the chassis with steel tubing and filling with sand.

    It's really amazing though, that in the US you're still building 50s style carts. In the UK you're expected to have disc brakes, bmx wheels and ackermann-correct steering.

    How did you make the steering system?

    • @hoohoohoblin
      @hoohoohoblin  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Wrap a rope around the steering column and put a nail or screw through it to hold it on. Turning the steering wheel pulls the rope one way or the other, pulling on the axle to turn. Run the rope down from the steering wheel through eye bolts on the floorboard and forward to the axle. Try to have no slack in the rope.

      I think the Cub Scouts do this in every state. There is definitely a trophy for the winner, and the Cub Scout pack gets to take it home and put it in their trophy case. We have one or two of them from past years.

    hey where building a car for town to race its a 228ft track only whats faster lighter or heavy in a short distance

    • @hoohoohoblin
      @hoohoohoblin  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it’s downhill all the way, heavier is better. On our race course it is completely downhill, and everybody puts bags of sand and cement in their cars to make them faster down the hill.

    • @hoohoohoblin

      That's cool. Do you have to win the race to get an A?

    • @GlovingSecret
      @GlovingSecret 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Winning the race will get you an A+ of course but most importantly if you build a strong race car that is actually able to enter the race showing the three functions (rolling, steering and braking) will be enough to get you an A
