      Gordon Laing superb review as always. 4K? Meh, not interested. But the rest is compelling and yes phase detect would be nice but not holding my breath considering Canon’s usual approach. Price wise though I must admit I was hoping for it.

    I was actually considering this cam as a replacement for my current B vlog cam the Canon G1X III just to have 4K and mic-in but looking at the footage I think I will stick with it until Sony comes with a M7 of the RX100. The optical stabilised 1080 image from the G1X looks more pleasing (maybe due to the larger sensor) and the DP AF never failed on me, audio is also pretty decent with some windjammers glued to the mics. If only Canon would make a G1X with non cropped 4k and mic-in...... Thanks for the fast review of this new cam, I'll wait for my next purchase until you've reviewed it. 😅

    Good to see a step in the right direction from Cannon by adding a mic input and upgrading the picture quality! I see this as a good run and gun camera for travel and quick day to day needs that don’t require the price of a large DSLR. Only thing is at 7:07 if you use a external mic it needs to be put on a mounting accessory that hooks with the camera and mic because there is no place to put it on the camera . Great Review!

    A couple of comments, after watching your review without looking at any other footage coming from this camera:
    A) 1080p is considerably soft (unsurprisingly Canon, even with their DSLRs...), and its sharpness barely increases while shooting in 4K, according to this vid.
    B) The fact that is camera is preferred by "vloggers" doesn´t mean the overwhelming majority of the population potentially buying this camera (who are NOT vloggers) are going to find the main problem related to this camera by watching this vid (that is, its lousy CDAF) since shooting your face, at a more or less fixed distance, with face-tracking enabled, is not its primary use; they´re going to find its limitations (and the reason why people like me run away from 1" cameras with CDAF) while they´re shooting anything other than their faces, that being a bunch of trees, the omnipresent dog, or simply a bunch of coffee cups at different distances... ;)
    C) Both the G7X I and II had a well known problem concening the noise the AF makes, being perfectly audible on quiet environments, and perfectly capable of ruining your audio on silent environments. Not that I expect anything different, but if you could include a comment about it in your final review, it would be appreciated.
    Cheers!

    24mm equivalent full frame, the lens is 8.8mm so 24/8.8=2.72 crop factor, so f1.8 become 1.8*2.72=4.91 in full frame equivalent, 3.07 équivalent aps c with 1.6 crop, 2.46 m4/3 equivalent. Maybe good in his category, but you should really apply crop factor not only to focal, but also to aperture, this is extremly missleading for a lot of people. who dont have this knowledge....
    Sorry those kind of missing detail annoyed me. I will still watch ur video and like them but....
    And vlogging is also Broll so showing the af in other situation that face tracking is an essentiel part of vlogging test. And lowlight capability in in moderate lighted room is also mandatory.
    Im sure there are some people around that think for themself after watching ur video, why buy a full frame or apsc? this one as good stab, af work well, f1.8 is awesome sauce, they will have great dissapointement when they will saw the limitation by themself and maybe feel a bit fooled.
    I know also that u most of the time use a tripod/monopod block on ur chest, it s a great way to stab and i also do it, but it s missleading as it s make the stab look really better that it is. I have a canon M50 and the stab is s....t, I wonder a long time how u managed to be so good with it in ur test until I hear u speak of it in one or two of yours video (or more), u should always mention it, i was misslead by urs m50 tests and if i had only watch ur video, i could have been really upset at u after buying it. Was u doing that in this vidéo?
    Yeah, its a (maybe hard) critic and its becuase I like ur videos and will still watch it, that I think u should do better. Just my opinion.

    I would take the flexibility of having a mic jack over better auto focus because I can always manually focus but you can’t fix unusable audio from a bad internal mic

    The best reviewer I’ve seen. I’m surprised the video quality is not better than your video of the Canon G1X mk III, the colors and sharpness looked amazing on that one! May be the indoor lighting plus the g1x III larger sensor. Excellent review as usual!

    Not impressed with the AF, in the 1080p mode it looks fuzzy and soft, low contrast and washed out. The 4K mode looked better but nothing special.

    Another very good and comprehensive video. The sound of the lav mic sounds a little removed from the environment around you. I wonder if something like the Rode Video Micro would sound better. I also seemed to be hearing something that I might have put down as wind noise had you not been inside, so I assume that is a bit of clothing rustle. Of course, the amount of room tone you include is down to personal taste so this is not really a criticism. Just a comment. Thanks again.

  • @MarkMcPherson1

    Thank you Gordon. This video was great. It was informative as well as entertaining.
    I have a question.
    I want to use the camera to produce some 3 to 4 minute videos in my home office for my clients and of course the wider wold.
    I have just bought the G7X and I am not a very experienced with cameras or with making video
    I will sit about 2 metres from the camera and 1 metre behind me is black backdrop.
    Therefore, the distance from the camera to the black backdrop is about 3 metres.
    I have some softbox lights and also some LED lights.
    I will have the camera on a tripod.
    I will use 4K but for no other reason than people have told me it's the best.
    The question: Do I put the dial on top of the camera to auto or to movie?
    I realise this might be a rather basic question but this is the level I'm up to.
    Thank you Gordon.
    Mark.

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mark, glad you're enjoying the videos! Most cameras let you start recording video from any mode BUT generally unlock more control or features if they are on the movie mode. Canon for example may not even let you film in 4k unless you're not in movie mode on some models. Beware shooting in 4k on this model as the clip length becomes shorter and it's quicker to overheat.

      @Raichu595 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul Mayorga I understand exactly what you mean. I wasn’t the only one having issues with the auto focus either. I’ve seen quite a few other reviews mention it as well. Maybe it’s just a software bug and an update can hopefully fix it!

    • @PaulMayorga
      @PaulMayorga 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Raichu595 hopefully like ive had the 1st and 2nd g7x and its just sad they came up short on the 3rd hopefully it is just a software issue and they address it quicky because i know the second the rx100 mk7 hits the stores i feel like its all over for the g7x

    Now there is finally the microphone plug, but no hot shoe for the microphone. You can not believe that. Thankfully, Canon does not build cars. Although they have a steering wheel, but no seats. And the following model then has seats, but no doors and only 3 wheels. Holy shit, but we were lucky that Canon only builds cameras.

    • @mukor100k
      @mukor100k 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      maybe they didn't think of it to be convenient with the flip screen and also hot shoe being somewhat weird to have only as a mount without any other functionality.
      but i hear you... makes me want to glue a hot shoe there. mic is the biggest feature (against other similar 1" enthusiast compacts) that this camera has to offer and why i have waited for it for years...
      now we need a cage or plate for the mic, or bolt it under the camera. i guess it'll do.

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The lack of hotshoe may seem annoying, but it is quite easy to work around. You could also use a wired lav.

    • @okaro6595
      @okaro6595 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They will not add a hot shoe so that few vloggers can hook a microphone in it. Hot shoes are for flashes.

    • @DriveLongRoad
      @DriveLongRoad 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cameralabs Yes. You can also attach an accessory rail, but then always has extra stuff. And that's exactly what I really do not want with a compact camera. And why does the G7X III only has a 100mm lens, but the G5X II goes up to 120 mm, no one really knows. That's not solved very intelligently.

    • @mukor100k
      @mukor100k 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@okaro6595 true but the shoe mount doesn't necessarily need to be hot. think of video cameras... they're perfect for mics.
      but especially while vlogging the mic would be in front of the flip screen, and depending on the mic prevent it from being flipped.
