Quieting the heating system fuel pump on the Rangeline

  • The Airstream Rangeline uses unleaded fuel for everything including the heating system, which is a nice design. The fuel pump used to transfer fuel to the Timberline heating system is quite loud, which is annoying in the middle of the night. Following a suggestion from some other owners, I tried to reduce the noise on the fuel pump. Requires being comfortable with auto mechanics and messing with fuel lines.

The noise is coming from pump internally not from vibration on frame and rubber mounts won’t help. I tried.

Add a rubber pad to isolate the vibration from the frame.

It's already on a rubber isolation mount. I added some additional sound insulation in the box - still very noticeable sound when operating.

I had a diesel heater in my last van with a noisy pump. I did a similar mod where I suspended the pump inside a shell of 3" PVC pipe and 2 pipe caps. I filled the void in the PVC with "Safe and Sound" acoustic insulation. Lastly, I put an isolation mount on the pvc to minimize vibration transferring into the van. It made a huge difference and I could barely hear it running. Try the Roxul safe and sound material if you can get a scrap of it. It is also fire retardant.

I've reached a ripe enough age that I've had 2 vehicles where the fuel pump failed.
What do you think your Ram service center will say if they ever have to fix this?
Is there an aftermarket pump that is quieter? The remaining noise is still relatively loud and would drive me and my wife nuts trying to sleep

This was added by Airstream, so it's not something Dodge would ever fix. It's really not much more difficult to get to either - there's just a panel to unscrew first.

Would you buy this unit again?

Yes. I like to tinker and there's things that could be better so I work on them, but overall it's a pretty solid system. Some early 23 model purchasers have had electrical issues, but I haven't run into anything major.

@dunclawler thank you. We've read a lot about the early 23 electrical issues. We had put some money down on a used one with only 4k miles. But backed out fearful it was one of the plagued ones. Happy for you that yours is electrical problem free. We will keep looking. We really like the product and lay out.
