As a kid who grew up in the 2000’s with learning disabilities, I had a really, really hard time learning my tables. Then, my mom put in her old Schoolhouse Rock tapes to the VCR and I never had trouble again. Even the internet couldn’t help me, but the power of old fashioned music and colorful art did. God bless this man and everyone else at ABC who helped my parents, me, and eventually, my kids some time in the future.
When I was a Freshman in High School, I got to meet him. My choir was at a jazz festival, so we sang a song he wrote called, "I'm Hip." I played the jazz bass part that day. But our choir director found him and had us perform it for him. He seemed very happy. But later that day, we saw him perform some of his schoolhouse rock songs, along with some other jazz tunes. But just his enthusiasm. He's so happy with what he's created and he just wanted to share it with the world. I got his autograph at a time. And I just today was thinking about how much he liked what he did, after seeing an old Schoolhouse Rock clip. The Earth needs more innovators like him. He was an unsung hero of television because he didn't get a lot of recognition, but he did it because it's what he liked to do.
I grew up watching Schoolhouse Rock in the 80's. I met Bob while hiking the Appalachian Trail in 2017. His band was playing at the jazz club in Delaware Water Gap PA. after an hour and a half of playing regular jazz songs, he said "Now I'm going to play some songs for the hikers" then he played 4 Schoolhouse Rock songs, I had the widest smile on my face!
Surely the Deerhead Inn. Awesome little town I had the pleasure of living in during late 70's/80's. They take good care of the hikers coming through. my family and i started the Delaware Water Gap Jazz and art's fest in 81' its big start year. had the pleasure of calling Bob Dorough a Dear friend. Loved your comment from a hikers perspective.
Bob Dorough was a sweet man. I recall hearing the 2x and 3x demos in third grade and then the privilege of being invited to sing on 4x tables. I have always remembered his sweetness. It has been wonderful to find him again on the Internet and to watch him. I’m flooded with memories of being a boy and growing up.
Im 58 and Learneds from this show and Im jus coming across this video and learning This was the man behind the music..Who else watched this with a HUGE smile on their face😁😁😊❤❤
Come on, folks, SING ALONG!!! Everyone's so inhibited and "grown-up." Like they're afraid of making fools of themselves for singing "children's songs." Man, I'd've jumped up on the stage and been hamming it up been helping Bob sing these treasured tunes as he helped ME by giving me something wonderful to hold onto in my childhood. Thank you for everything, Mr. Dorough.
I'm top end gen-x with an engineering degree and this man has been one of the top teachers in my life and I never knew him. I still know most of the songs by heart. Thanks, Bob.
Thanks Bob Dorough for my childhood memories. I've learned a lot through your songs. Your songs surely heiped me in school. I cherish those songs they are with me for a lifetime. GOD BLESS YOU.
I learned to love jazz at the Deerhead Inn, in Delaware Water Gap. Bobby hung out there a lot. I ended up helping to record a flute recital by his daughter at East Stroudsburg. All that I did was to make sure to turn the cassette over, but after that Bobby always made sure to thank me. He was an incredibly kind person. The last time I saw him was at his house. A bunch of people were gathered around the piano, and he and Vicki Doney sang Sentimental Journey.
Was this really 2016? He would’ve been in his early 90’s here?? If so, he looks fantastic! What a great guy. RIP Bob Dorough. You made my childhood a little happier.
Growing up in the 70’/80’s, schoolhouse rock really helped me. Saturday Mornings in the Midwest, cartoons,Big Blue Marble, favorite bowl of cereal(Cookie Crisp)and Schoolhouse Rock!😊
The SHR video collection is worth every penny for a growing child's education. 8 was my favorite Multiplication Rock song. It's melancholy tone really was a beautiful song.
Rest In Peace rob dorough. You educated not just one but several generations. Music is a great, genius way to teach the youth and thank you for all you’ve done.
I love schoolhouse rock and am now a teacher in Hawaii. Last night I had a dream about schoolhouse rock and the multiplication table. It brought me here to this video. Thank you Bob and team for making my childhood beautiful. Your music is the soundtrack of my childhood and life. God bless you and your team. I know you are singing with the angels. Boom Shaka! \m/ :)
I loved this. I dearly wish I'd known his name before getting news that he died, because his songs taught me so much! To this day I can still sing the preamble. In fact, I have to sing it in order to remember it, lol.
joy, joyous, joyfulness!!!!!!! :) i just caught back up with the memorial epi of 'fresh air' via podcast i heard a few weeks back while out driving, and had to come look for viddys of the guy... his voice and gentle humor brings back so many memories of being small and cozy, lying in front of the tv, with the smell of crayons, playdoh, tinkertoys and lego around... :) i can only imagine what it must be like at the club on the other side with him now... i'd love to hear him, and folks like scatman crothers and louis armstrong riffing like crazy offa his stuff! they must be having so much fun!! :) seems like he was the 'appalachian bluesman' to hang with, back in the day.
He played venues great and small, including his local library that puts on a TEDx event every year with no money and a volunteer video crew. A generous spirit who was scheduled to do a library concert next month. RIP Bob.
He never met a piano he didn't like! He loved to entertain and would do it anywhere! When I was a child, he would visit and always do an impromptu concert. He had all of us participating and he continued to do this throughout his life! He was my Dad's oldest brother, and we all miss him!
Awesome. Hope to see the Bob documentary that I heard is coming out . The man is 93. Hope he's one of those that makes it to 120. By the looks of it he'll do just that.
I had a professor that was pissed about "our generation" and how we don't learn anything from TV. He made the mistake of saying that anyone who could stand up and state the preamble of The US Constitution could be excused from class. Of the 50'ish in the class about 12 of stood up and sang the preamble song. He kept his word and that was the first A I got in college. 🤣
They need to bring Schoolhouse Rock back...! Too many kids have reading, writing, math and comprehensmathproblems. They have their faces in front of a video game all day that they dont learn from.
I was in Political Science in College many many years ago. The first day, the Professor said, by next class....have the preamble memorized. It wasn't a problem for a lot of us because as mostly Gen Xers, we grew up watching those old Schoolhouse Rock commercials in the 70s on Saturday morning.
I recently saw the 50th anniversary of Schoolhouse Rock a few days ago…I didn’t like it, because the songs were reimagined by current artists and actors and were not in their original form…WE CANNOT LET BOB’S MUSIC DIE…very few things have stood the test of time like SHR…as long as there’s a kid that needs to learn, SHR can easily get the job done
Mr Dorough has passed on.Thank you Sir for enriching my life as a kid.God bless your family.

One of a kind soul--reached alot of ears and always with integrity and personality and great songs--he will be missed!
When I was in 4th grade all of us learned the preamble of the constitution from schoolhouse rock. I still have it memorized 48 years later.
ditto, but I have to sing it to recite it.
Thanks Bob Dorough for my childhood memories. I've learned a lot through your songs. Your songs surely heiped me in school. I cherish those songs they are with me for a lifetime. GOD BLESS YOU.

Such a nice guy, glad to see this on here.
I just want to point out, how many videos on the internet actually have ZERO dislikes. This video has gone 5 years with no dislikes. Not one. 5 years.
They stop counting the dislikes awhile ago. If someone clicked it, it doesn't count them. Just letting you know. No youtube videos have dislikes.
Thank You for the memories........
what a fkn legend. i grew up on those tapes. RIP
Rest in peace, Bob. So glad to get that email from you first.
One of the coolest cats. I'm so happy I got to meet him and thank him personally for his work.

That reminds me of a line in Frasier. “not to be technical but “off” is a preposition too” 😆
