- In this episode of In Depth Angling we are adventuring into the Northwoods wilderness to winter camp on the ice for crappie, bluegill, and trout. I catch a limit of crappie and several big bluegill while ice fishing these northern lakes.

Northern Ontario here, we could be cousins and neighbors. Buddy, you even *look* like me, which is good luck for you, of course.
Pike in winter is a good catch, but what we really want is "ling" or as it is properly called burbot.
Crappie's are fine if you want a light flaky dish with garlic and lemon. Pike is ok if you want to make it a pate over herbed toast or grill steaks over a wild leek salad... ling is in another category.
Cod is good, catfish are good, eels are good- imagine the taste and texture (and ease of cleaning on the latter two) all in one fish. Yes, it exists.
I would travel to Minnesota as you lot seem to have what we call a cultural affinity due to the landscape and lifestyle.
That's crazy I've never been any farther north than Minnesota. I'm looking into fishing for some burbot in the next couple weeks for the first time. Hopefully I get to try it for myself soon
