    Favorite pe game back in elementary. Difference was we use a soccer/football field which was fun because it had more space to run around and not get tag easily.

    The problem is students who get tagged may be put in jail for too long and lose participation and get bored. What I do with my class is if they get caught in order to get back in all they have to do is cross back into their half. That way no students sit out for too long and the game is very free flowing.

    This is one of the most requested games at my year-round day camp (second only to Dodge Ball)! Some kids call this version of CTF, "Rocks". We almost always end up playing best 2/3 because they just can't get enough!
    Thank you so much for the great visuals and clear explanations. (I often send your videos to the parents. They then watch with their kids before camp so they know what's up in advance.)

    My class love this game!! I've renamed it "capture the egg" and have used a rugby ball instead, incorporated with rugby passing and tackling.

    We played with 4 teams/zones. Each had just 1 flag. The free zone was not surrounding the flag but about midway in the each zone along the wall. The hula hoop surrounding the flag was also "free", and a player could not be tagged if they had 1 foot in the hoop. Jail was sectioned off with cones.

    When I was in school they never let us play capture the flag, kickball or most of the fun games. The government blamed school lunch for obesity. What about excercise if you ban the fun games to play then there's nothing to do.

    Thanks for the video. Very clear, but a few questions:
    1. A saved player released from jail and the person releasing them must take a "free walk" to their side of the field or can they go for the flag again? When you do take a "free walk," how do you identify yourself as taking a free walk? Raise hands?
    2. How come a player can only be tagged on the opposing side of the field? Wouldn't it be more fun if any player can be tagged at any place on the field?

    • @physedgames
      @physedgames  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +kmxtornado 1. players must first go back to their own side before they can get a flag. they could raise hands to identify free pass, but that's not even needed.
      2. feel free to try it out where players can get tagged anywhere on the field, and let me know how it goes! I'd think it might be too chaotic though...but who knows. thanks for the comments.

    How many guards can you have outside the cones for the safe area? And, is there a rule for guarding the jails?

    • @physedgames
      @physedgames  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s really up to you, and depends how large your gym area is. Start with 1 or 2 guards per area and see how it goes. I’ve played rounds with no guarding jails, and allowing guarding. Both ways work.

    Hi love your videos - haven't seen them all but I am looking for one specific and was wondering if you knew it / heard of it
    Balls start in middle with teams on four corners - individuals run collecting one ball at a time until balls are finished in middle - then they start "stealing" from teams next door
    What I cannot remember is how many balls and when is game finished (and anything I have missed out)
    Can you help?

  • @whiteout5643
    @whiteout5643 11 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    This was almost exactly like I remembered back when I was a kid. Really the only a few main differences were that if I was in jail and one of my teammates came to free me from jail, neither of us were safe until we got back to the other side. There also wasn't any cones around the flags for a safe area, and each team had 1 player designated to be the flag guard and another as the jail guard. Granted we had about 25 players per team and used a football field. Oh how I miss being a kid!

    • @marc6506
      @marc6506 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @whiteout5643:
      Yeah, absolutely, if you had a good childhood though which is kinda part of the 'birth lottery' which I 'won', too. That was an easy lifetime filled with simple unguilty pleasure.
      I can't agree with the part I kinda 'heard between the lines' that it has to be totally over as an adult.
      For my part I just try to protect the "inner child" in myself, a term which derives from a psychological concept and everyone has an inner child even if it's not conscious or been satisfied which could be damaging like addictions because of lacking basic needs for example.
      Also it's healthy to protect and satisfy the inner child part in a balanced way which I try and IMHO everyone should.
      So let's "play" respectively have little 'unguilty' pleasures further on whenever possible. When being a parent your kids will love it.
      I played "Catch me if you can" on a big stable playground scaffolding with my then 10 yr old son and some unknown kids one time as the only parent of many passive parents only observing their children on this playground. After a good time I "switched" to the parent role again of course in a very controlled way. BTW I never ever saw a parent on a playground scaffolding 'playing childish' which is sad to me.
      At this point I maybe should mention that happened in Germany, I'm german and there it's not forbidden because of safety reasons or so.
      It happened only once but I took the chance.
      I remember this as one of the happiest times being a parent having a little unguilty pleasure with my son.
      Just do it in your way equal what others think or say. They're just jealous obviously not 'being able' to do it for whatever reason. I'm sure you could find a way that applies to your country, dear adult readers.
      Of course I took many chances to literally play with my children in a 'childish way' but this one sticks out and I'll never forget it - maybe because I've noticed that all other parents on this playground were just missing to take their chance while looking jealously. Unwise.
      Now my sons are in their twenties and the time to do this with an own child may be only about 10 yrs long. Tempus fugit.
      Through my studies I learned that in one psychological interpretation of Genesis 22, 1-19 (Binding of Isaac) according to this concept the Issac figure would represent the "inner child" and Abraham the "inner parent" that initially thinks that he has to 'kill' the "inner child" (Isaac) to fully become an adult. God represents the wise "inner adult".
      Actually the psychological concept is more complex as there are two different inner children and also two inner parents representing different child/parent aspects. This was one of my Top 10 interesting contents of the theology part I studied for my exam.
      So, according to this interpretation the conclusion also is to not to kill the inner child to become a "whole person" which the 'ideal believer' represents as the Bible figure Abraham stands for according to genealogist interpreters of the old testament which is another much older fraction of course but kinda melting together in this case which often happens with "good" different interpretations which is kinda approving their solid ground. And also this Bible part is much more complex thinking of "3 days", active/passive parts to carry, the ram, the mountain, descendants etc.
      In the end the importance to keep a "healthy inner child" is very old "wise truth" thousands of years old and not even christian only. IMHO it applies to every human adult. The animals don't loose it just by nature (think of playing grown dogs, cats, birds, monkeys etc.).
      PS: Kinda crazy comment to a child's game explanation, isn't it? But I tried to answer your comment's very last sentence, @whiteout5643. Maybe a little too long, but some others missing their childhood also could be interested anyways.

    I was supplying gym classes for a summer camp program and was struggling with the bigger kids (10-12 yrs old). I came across this video and tried out this game today with them and they LOVED it! (I couldn't find flags but I used red and blue plastic party cups and worked just as well)
    Couple of questions I encountered though:
    -the kids were complaining that the other team are "monkey guarding" (5/6 people hovering the area) the free zone and the jail zone, making it very difficult for the opponent team to run back to their zone
    -once a player went over to the opponent team to free a jailed teammate, do they need to continue hold hands or can they escape separate ways running back to their home base?
    -when a player stepped into the safe zone, instead of getting the opponent flag, can they take back the flag that the opponent captured back to their home base?
    Thanks!

    • @physedgames
      @physedgames  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. Thanks for the comment.
      1) you could make a rule where only 1 or 2 guards are allowed, or increase the size of the safe zone and/or jail(s)
      2) they don't need to continue to hold hands. I would give them both a FREE walk back to home side
      3) Sure you could do it that way. If you used 'flags' (cups) all of the same color then all that matters is for 1 team to just capture all of the flags. ie: color isnt actually important

    This game can also be a great way to use multiplication, addition, and subtraction. At any given time, I blow my whistle and we count the people in jail and do arithmetic. The student who raises their hand can be captain and guard the flags at a specified spot by me.

    • @blackbirdgaming8147
      @blackbirdgaming8147 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You’d think that it would be crowded, and it might be, but that makes things interesting. Crowded is a good thing, makes scoring a more rewarding experience. Also makes the kids think more since they’ll have to strategize to win.
      I’ve played 40 on 40 CTF and it was complete chaos, such a fun experience. Very difficult to score. Required a lot of strategy, speed, and jukes.

      German here: Only in US, I think. Obviously you can use everything.

    Thanks for this video my problem is......if a player on the other team is guarding the flag box, isn't really easy just to tag a person coming out with the flag?

    • @physedgames
      @physedgames  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, if you make the flag box big enough then it won’t be a problem. When I play, I make the box about 12ft x 12ft and it works even with multiple guards.
      I could see it being an issue if your flag box was too small (ex 5ft x 5ft)

    What is drawn on the flags BTW? Idea for 'prisoners' not to be passive too long: When the other team also catched someone the 'prisoners' could be exchanged ...
    (1) immediately or
    (2) if one team catches its second prisoner.
    They could just go back to their field outside the field without being held back.
    So with this two options of this variation the dynamics of the game could be accelerated and also adjusted. The prisoners have less passive time and the jails only need space for one prisoner in both variants which is good for small spaces to play on.
    The rule when to exchange 'prisoners' could be ...
    a. immediately when the 2nd catch occurs (so this 2nd wanna-be prisoner actually doesn't go to jail but directly back) or
    b. after the 2nd 'prisoner' reaches his jail (a 1 s sentence ;-) or
    c. after X minutes for the afterwards exchanged 'prisoners' in jail
    AND (always)
    d. immediately when a 3rd 'prisoner' is catched who then gets solely to jail and becomes a '1st prisoner' then because the two exchanged ones from both sides left jail.
    I just made nothing up when the same team catches its 2nd 'prisoner' and the other team has none. Maybe simply when a 3rd 'prisoner' goes to the same jail then the 1st 'prisoner' gets free immediately of this jail without further limitations.
    How do you like the idea, mates?

    What are your rules on guarding the cone area? My students favorite thing to do is puppy guard during any game like this.

    • @physedgames
      @physedgames  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends... when in a large space like our big gym I allow the puppy guarding (and if a player is tagged half-in-half-out, then they do Rock Paper Scissors to see if the player goes to jail or is safe). In the small gym I allow only 1 ‘guard’ who can stay near the cone area. Hope that helps!
