This is one of his most impressionistic songs - word pictures rather than any firm meaning, and haunting and fascinating as a result. The addition of the brass solo (on French horn, I think) adds a great texture, too. Neil had so many great songs around this time - "Cinnamon Girl" might be a good one to hit next.
PLEEEAAASSEE listen to "Powderfinger" next! The story Young weaves through his lyrics are remarkable. It's like a John Steinbeck short story set to music, with a lesson about the futility of violence.
"There was a fanfare blowin' to the sun \ That was floating on the breeze" -- Neil Young bought a ranch in Half Moon Bay, California with his earnings from this album that he named Broken Arrow Ranch. One of my cousins lived just a few miles away. She used to clean the houses on the ranch back in the nineties. Her husband would sometimes go out to hunt deer in the hills the ranch was nestled in. He once told me a story about the time he was out hunting and kept hearing a strange soft ringing sound coming from the top of a hill and tracking it down to studio where one of Young's guitars was left plugged in to an amplifier and was resonating in the breeze that blew through the open windows in the building. The lyric I cited above always reminds me of that story. Young moved to Colorado since then, but his son still lives on the ranch last I heard. Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, and Linda Ronstadt performed "After The Goldrush" live on Late Night with David Letterman in March 1999. They updated the lyrics and added a glass harmonium, a musical instrument invented by Benjamin Franklin in 1761 which mechanized the ringing sounds made by running a finger around the rim of a wine glass in such a way that the glass resonates. The performance was stellar. Neil Young must have been thrilled to see it. Check out the clip of it on TH-cam when you can.
Exactly. Parton, Harris, and Ronstadt changes the lyric about ‘felt like getting high.’ Neil has been singing “…Mother Nature on the run in the 21st century” in his live shows since this century began. I think he is probably pissed that it can still be said 50 years later
Alabama I don't think you've done that yet and you've dedicated quite a bit of time to the thing with Neil and Skynyrd. It's relevant to that story, and also a kickass song. Then Revolution Blues! I wouldn't be surprised if someone heard him sing those different lyrics at a more recent show.
🎸Deja vu,🎸 Teach your children please, 🎶both off 1st album that Young was on with Crosby, Stills, and Nash.🎼 Thank you for reacting to this song, will be watching for your next one.
This is the first time I have seen anyone react to this song. This song, and this album was why I became a fan of Mr. Young. Thanks for reminding me. The lyrics are 'I felt like getting high'
Biz, I am so happy that you have been featuring Neil Young more and more often. Youwill never run out of worthy songs with him. After The Gold Rush was my favorite NY song for a long time. In 1978 I ised to listen to it after work, 2-4 times a day, every day. Since then, he has put out way too much music for me to have a favorite. A french horn in this one, for christsakes! I have seen him do this live, alone. He was the only person on the stage witha truckload of instruments - and he rocked every song he played. For After The Gold Rush it was him, an old upright piano, a harmonica, and his voice. It was very moving.
Neil young and crazy horse Live Rust has been on my desert island top ten since I was 16 in 1986. Keeping mother nature on the run in the 21 st century. I think she has us on the run.
Here's another song by Neil Young, if interested. "Neil Young - Look Out For My Love" (by the channel: Ghost On The Road) This performance is from his Unplugged concert in 1993. And the song is from their ninth studio album called "Comes A Time" released in 1978. There's a really cool backstory about this album. "The Story of "Comes A Time" album is legendary in the history of rock music. Unhappy with the sound of the original LP mix, Neil Young purchased 200,000 copies to take them out of circulation. The story told by Young's son Scott in his book "Neil and Me" holds that Neil Young shot bullet holes in every one of the 200,000 LP's, ensuring that no one would be able to play them. 😂 But in a March 2014 interview with Rolling Stone. Neil Young himself claimed that he used the 200,000 LP's as shingles for a barn roof. (I think this is hilarious😉) Really enjoyed this one, Biz. This happens to be one of my personal favorites. Sorry didn't mean to write a book. lol 😃peace out~
One of his lesser known songs. It was good to hear it because I haven't heard this song in many years. You can't go wrong with Neil Young. Some songs are better than others but they are all good.
I like this song a lot, but there are other Neil songs that I like even more. For your next Neil, take your pick between "Cinnamon Girl", "Cowgirl in the Sand", "Like a Hurricane", or "Powderfinger". Any of these would be fine.
PS. Neil Young based "After the Gold Rush" on a screenplay for an unmade film -- After the Gold Rush -- written by his friend Dean Stockwell, an actor you might recognize from reruns of the television shows Battlestar Galactica or Quantum Leap, or maybe even the film Blue Velvet.
Neil Young is STILL The MAN. But Neil adapts with the turns of the calendar. Since 2000 when he sings this song he sings "look at Mother Nature on the run in the 21st Century". Really makes you think. Like I said Neil is STILL The MAN, and a major Ecologist.
When it comes to Neil, south of like Bob Dylan, it is his music and lyrics which are far more important than his singing. The album by the same name is a masterpiece having one of his most memorable tunes called Southern Man!
This whole album is gold! Neil has changed lyrics, particularly the "1970s" when he sang it in more recent years. I'm not sure about the "getting high" line
Neil's output from the 70's to the 80's - you can almost throw a dart at any song in this period and hit a banger. So, keep going!
One of the most talented musicians on the planet!
One of the five greatest albums of all time.
Neil can play it soft, and he can play it hard. All of it's unique, his lyrics, his voice, his guitar. Great job Biz.
Oooh…my favorite Neil Young song! There was a band playing in my head and IFLGH.
This is one of his most impressionistic songs - word pictures rather than any firm meaning, and haunting and fascinating as a result. Fluglehorn
The beautiful, unique voice of Neil Young. Always a masterpiece.
The most imperfect, but perfect voice you’ll ever hear. Great song!🖖🏼
Absolutely 💯 love Neil Young
After the Gold Rush, a fantastic song from a spectacular and important album.
PLEEEAAASSEE listen to "Powderfinger" next! The story Young weaves through his lyrics are remarkable. It's like a John Steinbeck short story set to music, with a lesson about the futility of violence.
That’s my favourite Neil Young song.awesome voice, that only he has
Second only to Dylan for output.
The past, present and future. Knights in armor, I was lying in a burned out basement, silver spaceship..
Pure artist. Greatness like no other.
A truly wonderful album .....
Neil Young "Harvest Moon" and "Unknown Legend" ❤❤
This song always gives me hope. 😊
Like Dylan, Neil Young must’ve been touched by a mystical spirit.
GEORGE BENSON- ON BROADWAY
start there i think you would love it. Jazzy from the 70's -80's. Lots of hits! 🪀
Love neil young!

One of the best Rock albums ever made....period. So early in his career and soooooooooo perfect ! Oh Canada.
This is the first time I have seen anyone react to this song. This song, and this album was why I became a fan of Mr. Young. Thanks for reminding me. The lyrics are 'I felt like getting high'

One of my favourite albums of all time. ❤
Great reaction. And great connection to Joni.

☮️💙💙💙🔥🔥my favorite in high school
The lyrics you are reading are from Trio's version recorded 20+ years after Neil's original.
One of my favorite songs and artist. Glad you did this one!
Biz! Thank you for keeping the best music ever recorded!
When it comes to Neil, south of like Bob Dylan, it is his music and lyrics which are far more important than his singing. The album by the same name is a masterpiece having one of his most memorable tunes called Southern Man!
I think the change to the lyrics dates from when Linda Ronstadt covered the song.
And yeah, with Neil you have to embrace the whine.
As time passed, Neil changed some of the lyrics when performing this song. To keep it relevant.
Biz, would you please listen to Neil's "Powderfinger" and experience what happens when lyrics like this are given a distorted, electric treatment.
Excellent song
Masterpiece
to me the greatest Neil Young album, spent too many nights to remember as a teen crashing out in the basement
Well. Neil doesn't say the silver spaceships are the Anunnaki, but After the 'Gold' Rush, who knows. Maybe.
You mentioned it reminded you of Joni Mitchell, I will point out....both Canadian 😊👍🇨🇦🇨🇦
🫡He’s got a bunch of work…150 something records ❤😎🤘
Love me any Neil Young check out "Cortez the Killer" Live sometime its pretty Epic
Hey Biz, listen to Cortez the Killer, spectacular guitar work.

Jimmy Fallon looks to this song when he impersonates Neil
The woodstock nation. The mother ship .
💯
You get it's about alien life visiting Earth several hundred years ago.
This whole album is gold!
Neil has changed lyrics, particularly the "1970s" when he sang it in more recent years. I'm not sure about the "getting high" line
Wow, you know about the Anunaki...
It’s good it grows on you. The other songs on this album are better. “Only love will Break your heart “.
When worlds collide. movie. space arc to take humanity to alternate planet when earth was destroyed. sci fi fifties movie.
A much greater song than jonis big yellow taxi.
For a great JM song try edith and the kingpin.
link no work, second channel
You can’t always trust their shlyrics 😛
A staple of his concerts …listen to the live version and find out why. th-cam.com/video/Wf-Ssugf20w/w-d-xo.htmlsi=owcRi_GJxV86VB4Z
Science fiction.
Love your honesty it was a good song but he is whiny.
Too bad not enough people took heed. Mother Nature has just about run out of breath. Incredible song by an incredible talent.
The grandfather of grunge
Between Neil Young and Gordon Lightfoot how can you go wrong. The best of the best
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
