I kinda like oatmeal though
It's funny cause it's backwards: Oatmeal is great, but raisins are terrible by default, so the fact that the delicious oatmeal is unchanged, but the horrible raisins are replaced with spiders means that there has been no change in quality.

KINFIN123 it’s because their dead and in his realm he went on a magical quest and was granted a single wish.. and that wish was to drop a house on every last one of them. It’s my favorite bed story to this day. Gotta love some sir Davveus chap before bed.

I have a massive love-hate-terror relationship with hags. As a DM, I love them. As a player, they terrify me, and I hate them with every molecule of my being.
My players only feel the latter thirds of that dynamic. Granny Dreamrot has adopted our tiefling sorcerer as her own after a certain... incident, and they've been completely paranoid about what her goal is.

Hags are so god damn ridiculous, and i love it. Go see the Volo's section of hag vehicles and it will all make sense.
as a dm I had my players see a hag ride in on an actual bumper car, in a high fantasy setting lol
@cak01vej spoilers for the campaign but i explained this as a rift in spacetime actually created a portal to a carnival so the party had to go to a theme park in the 80's to defeat a hag coven who fucked up that whole shop complete with killer clowns

I think a crucial piece of information (though hinted at), is missing and needs clarification.
Hags, more than any Fey love suffering. Thats how they get thier jollies, by watching good folk fall to depravity through desperation.
I love hags. As a DM, I had one in a trio of old grannies based on the old Wendy’s “Where’s the beef?!” commercials of the 80’s. One got infected, ate the sweet old grandmother who was basically Rose from The Golden Girls, and that infected one got killed by the party. Now the remaining granny, the hag who had liked the party, wants revenge but the party doesn’t know it yet. I can’t wait for her to turn back up down the road.

Hags make such great side quests. They can be powerful enough to be relevant at any level, and their deal making can be a great plot mechanism to advance the main story.
It got to the point where I ask "Do they have any prisoners?" If not, the group and i burn their place down then rain spells and arrows on them when they run out
A one shot I’ve yet to finish has the final boss be a hag called Granny AM who’s been in a forest/mountain area for centuries. She was able to get every kid to commit mass murder on their parents in the small but growing town. Now she’s seen as a village elder who’s always been here. Magic items are a smoking pipe of geas that bleeds into your entire family tree if you fail the save, a tooth that grows one wight when implanted into the ground, a jar of honey that casts slow, and she’s so old she’s warped the forest into creating illusions of her that does damage unless you look into a tree Blair witch style.
A recent plotline of "The Wandering Inn" web serial deals with witches much the same way: don't get greedy, know there will be some catch, and don't try to cheat the women who have been wheeling and dealing since before your grandparents were born- especially if they can call in favors from past customers
Hags actually make REALLY fun additions to games! Because you can actually sit there debating them in semi logical ways! Also if you have a bard... well you can imagine!

I find it funny that davy finds the evil hags better people to deal with than neutral aligned fey.

Operative difference is that hags seem to be written to have clearer goals than neutral fey.
All you have to do with a hag is find out how she intends to benefit.
Hag: "What do you wish for?"
Davvy: "FOR THESE FEY TO LEAVE ME THE F**k AlONE!"

Is there a homebrew playable witch/hag?
I’d love to play as one.
Closest thing would probably be Warlock with an Archfey as your patron. In fact the rule book even says your patron could be a super powerful ancient hag. Be sure to take hex as one of your level one spells.
You could also play an Eladrin elf flavored as being a descendant of a hag.
I have seen a homebrew for a half hag PC race, though that was a while ago and I cant remember the site where I found it
I have a "the Witch" class on DM's Guild. It's available in PDF and EPub format and you can pay what you want (leave a review if you like).
If you find The Witch by Greg Baxter on DM's Guild then you are on the right page.
There's a homebrew Warlock pact, called pact the coven.

I like reading hags as people who have descended too deep into fey magic in the same way that lichs descended into necromancy. They sought immortality, dug too deep, and were irrevocably changed.

In my games, hags are the oldest fey of all, the originators of all fey races. Additionally, they're all powerful Divination Wizards, and each of them has seen visions of the end times.
It is due to these visions that they spend all their time hoarding power, in preparation for the end of the world. They are, in the end, the world's most powerful guardians. But their vision of deep time, and the weight of their task, makes them cruel to living individuals. They just don't care that much about people, because their self-appointed task vastly outweighs anyone's feelings. They are the last line of defense for existence itself, and it is the hags that will save the world at the very end. So they don't give a shit about you or your life.
Oh Davy, what a tale you bring to me!
Of witches, hags, and Fae, a story to see.
With wicked ways and a love for the macabre,

I had a cool npc idea of a ranger or paladin that exclusively target hags so he has a necklace full of annis hag coins and similar other hag memorabilia
One time my players literally called the inquisition on a Hag because she cursed one of the party members, and they got their asses kicked when they tried to kill her to end the curse so when the inquisition got an tip from a mysterious person saying there was an extremely powerful Hag in the woods they checked it out then dropped an army of paladins on the Hag a week later the curse deactivated due to the casters death
The new Eberron supplement recently introduced the Dusk Hag
So in short when dealing with anything fey bring fire... A *lot* of fire
And iron and steel. Fey hate that.
To be fair most things are dealt with summoning the fire plane on the head of our enemies

Me and my brother encountered a hag called granny waybuloo, who had turned a town into a 50s Americana type place and had a tendency to knit people into her house. My brother defeated her by repeating dragon alot, which summoned a friendly dragon called Alan.

They aren't, they actually make witches as warlock patrons, witches base themselves off of them.

But hags could be considered witches because they start out as regular fey but they get turned into hags because they're evil, and since turning into hags gives them magical abilities, the force that transforms them might be considered their patrons.
Well, a green hag is CR 2 and my party of 2 LVL 2 characters can take out a CR 2 monster somewhat easily, but annis hags and night hags should not be engaged that early, I'd wait till lvl 4 to 6 to fight the tougher hags.

Very late, but if your the dm, then say “In my world, hags groups in fours”. But with current lore, I would say a coven of 9, 27, 81 and so on would work
