This edition and TSR 4th edition Gamma World are my favorites .
I run 2nd edition with the players all being tribe members from the same clan going through their rite of passage into becoming full adult tribe members .
I start them out as 14 to 15 year olds and give then a choice of 2 rank 1 melee weapons and a missle weapon along with basic gear such as a back pack , 2 water skins , 2 weeks dried rations , a bowl , cup , a fork and a spoon ( all of them wooden ) , a bed roll and a 1 man tent and everyone gets a dagger .
It saves time by outfitting then with basic gear that everyone gets .
I did make a rank 1 occupations table that players roll on twice to see their father and mothers occupation and they get to choose which one to take .
Each occupation has about 6 skills associated with it and players get 6 skill points plus their int bonus in skill points to either increase occupation skills or to buy new skills or any combination of both .

I threw that together in Sandbox for Foundry. It's not something I planned on using or giving out. However. If you want me to show you how I made it, I can do that. Otherwise, it still needs some basic work before I would be comfortable sharing the code. When I get a chance, I'll let you know. Just remind me if it gets a little long in the tooth. 🙂
