Thank you for this very clear explanation. I'm having my first PET Scan tomorrow as I will be receiving treatment soon for Triple Negative Breast Cancer that has spread to at least one Lymph node. This test sounds like it will give my Oncologist and me some very helpful information.
I am the last of 9 kids, 6 put of the 9 have had or have cancer. Through the years I've had countless CT's and MRI's. I have begged my doctor to give me a pet scan yet I'm told I have to and I quote "something cut out and it has to be cancer in order for them to give me the pet scan. My brother asked for a cat scan and the refused to give him one. He now has stage 4 lung cancer. My son had brain cancer last year. My question would be if you have 6 out of 9 children with cancer and a child, why then would the not allow me to have a pet scan? The keep giving me MRI and CT scans, that in itself could save money by just doing a pet scan. My brother with stage 4 lung cancer begged also for this test and now his chances of living are slim. Scared and not sure what to do at this point. And by the way my insurance company approved the scan but the doctors will not. HELP PLEASE!
Doctor joke. But back in '05 or so when I was in school I had to go to the SNMMI's annual meeting in Philadelphia and on one of the floors in the convention center where all the new cameras were, I could have sworn I saw a miniature PET scanner for imaging what I assumed would be rats. If you're testing cancer drugs on RATS you need to be able to scan them to see if its working.
Excellent overview of PET Imaging Dr. Waxman.

"It's not a way of imaging small animals"
Too late. I just submitted a grant proposal where I want to use PET for exactly that.
