  • Bolt Cutters VS ABUS 83/80 Padlock review Rekey Rekeying cut with angle grinder. This is One HUGE PADLOCK. It's big It's Bad and a supper tough lock. I put it through the testing for bolt cutters croppers, Drilling, cutting and angle Grinder.
    This ABUS Rock padlock features a hardened steel chromed body with a special alloy shackle to resist cutting. This is the strongest padlock it is larger than most other padlocks, features a stronger and thicker shackle, and a much stronger body. Its body is chrome coated to prevent rust and corrosion. Due to the heavy anti-drill plate on the padlock even though core cannot be removed from the padlock without unscrewing the bottom plate. Hardened Steel Padlock Body to resist grinding and drilling attacks
    Chrome Plating on body to resist rust and corrosion
    Special Alloy Hardened Steel Shackle for extreme cut and grinding resistance
    3 tall body
    3 1/8 wide body
    1 5/16 thick body
    9/16 thick shackle
    1 9/16 wide shackle clearance
    1 9/16 tall shackle clearance

    The Squire SS80CS is larger in every dimension, weighs 4.85lbs by itself, and has a heavily shrouded 16mm shackle. It is designed to allow only one link of chain through it though, so it will only work with chains that have long end links to fit through each other.

    Hi Wayne,
    There's actually a larger, handy dandy window access to the pins if you turn the key counter clockwise after pushing the rekey pin in. It doesn't make much of a difference, but it's a bit easier to dump the original 0 bitting pins out that way. Also, if you want to use the original core and have 6 pins, there's a teeny bag with a top spool, spring, and a specially cut brass square piece so you can install 6 pins easily. I really appreciate you testing this lock by the way - it gives people like me a good idea how resistant that lock is to forced entry. You make a good point about how important shrouding is to making a lock resistant to bolt cutter attacks.

      I'm sure companies do their research. Only, it makes business sense that most locks are manufactured with volume sales in mind. They would rather have a not-so-strong, cheaper lock, that they can sell 10 million units of, instead of having a super strong lock of which they can sell only 10 thousand units.

  • @DonzLockz
    @DonzLockz 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Glad to see you testing these locks to extremes but also sad and difficulty seeing you beat it up with a hammer! Yeah, super hard shackles like anything similar will eventually crack but no normal human even with the largest bolt cutters in the field will open that lock like you said.. (without a grinder). The Squire is not available in Australia so I'll be getting the Abus and probably upgrade the core and still come out with change. They now make a CS so that'll be in the cart soon! Thanks for doing these tests and reviews Wayne! ;)

    Why don't they just use the same grade steel as the Pewag chain for the lock shackle ?

    • @juanbaclavab
      @juanbaclavab 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      that's a square link chain, it's much more difficult to get thru using bolt cutters.

    • @toddsmithselbow1732

      @@juanbaclavab Begs the question, then why not use a square shackle on the padlock? Some of the Abus u lock use the squared shackle.

    • @juanbaclavab
      @juanbaclavab 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@toddsmithselbow1732 I have no idea why there are no squared shackle padlocks but a bolt cutter attack would still defeat them in the perfect circumstances anyways. Anything below 16mm can be cropped no matter the hardness or type of alloy as Irwin 42 inch croppers have a maximum tensile force of 16 tonnes. If it can't be cut it can be broken, it's physics, it has to do with the angle of the handles of the cutters. 16mm and above of hardened steel is completely impossible to crop manually

    • @toddsmithselbow1732
      @toddsmithselbow1732 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@juanbaclavab Well it seems like certain instances even 12.7mm is almost bolt cutter proof. I'm not sure if by being square it's more material than a 12.7mm round chain counterpart or what. But it seems like if this Abus's 15mm round shackle was even 14mm squared and hardened like that Pewag chain, it would have stood up to it. th-cam.com/video/ujelHfT1onA/w-d-xo.html

    That ABUS 83/80 Padlock retails for about $120.00. From what the price book states, other keying options or adapters for high security cylinders such as Medeco, ASSA or Schlage Primus is also available for use with this padlock... in addition to a longer shackle diameter to accommodate larger chain (such as 14mm). The Abus 83/80 padlock sports a 5/8" diameter shackle. Whereas American & Master Lock only offers a maximum shackle diameter of 7/16" on their largest of padlocks.

    The angle grinder attack is scary. However, there isn't any security devices that are commercially available to adequately resist this sort of an attack...
    Another scary attack method is the use of a plasma torch or a thermal lance. Both are equally as effective and destructive.

    often consider the best why to secure select contents of cargo van
    alarm
    window grates
    other locks
    a way to prevent front doors from opening even if windows are smashed
    and finally
    an idea addition of steel stock through bolted to portion of interior frame that allows say this lock to be connected to chain, select larger tools or expensive bikes and then through the steel stock
    assume your work van was left in a remote location for two hours surrounded by thieves... with massive bolt cutters and battery powered cutter/ grinder
    best set up?
    would like to also be able to head out on day hikes, extended weekend camping- miles off roads/ parking lot and with at least several items locked in and to portion of van... perhaps in a fabricated smaller strong box but with heavy duty locks
    alarms are often easily disabled or if 15 miles away by foot ...useless.

      Yeah, definitely top tier.
      Got myself a Abloy PL342 with Protec2 core and Abus 12KS chain. Should deter most attacks short of an angle grinder!

    can you do a test of the Litelok bike lock? Their internal video shows it resisting bolt cutters, saws and even prolong attack with angle grinder. I purchased one but wonder if it's really that strong, but I don't trust the company video. th-cam.com/video/KB2ghne7sOU/w-d-xo.html

    Never mind but your video is too boring and unnecessarily big.

    often consider the best why to secure select contents of cargo van
    alarm
    window grates
    other locks
    a way to prevent front doors from opening even if windows are smashed
    and finally
    an idea addition of steel stock through bolted to portion of interior frame that allows say this lock to be connected to chain, select larger tools or expensive bikes and then through the steel stock
    assume your work van was left in a remote location for two hours surrounded by thieves... with massive bolt cutters and battery powered cutter/ grinder
    best set up?
    would like to also be able to head out on day hikes, extended weekend camping- miles off roads/ parking lot and with at least several items locked in and to portion of van... perhaps in a fabricated smaller strong box but with heavy duty locks
    alarms are often easily disabled or if 15 miles away by foot ...useless.
