You just helped me confirm what I need to do with my boy who wants to lead me. He didn't do that with my male trainer, but he has come home to me at a mew barn and I believe he wants to lead me as he explores on our walks. I will work on letting him know that he needs to respect my space and not walk in front by backing him up, stop to think, and do it again. He and I will start ground work too. Thanks for reassuring me.

Omg so helpful! My horse gets stubborn and doesn’t wanna walk and I try to wait or make sure she’s calm but sometimes it really is that she just doesn’t wanna move
One horse I ride is really pushy and wants to walk way ahead of me. And my riding instructor keeps telling me: "He is allowed to do that." No! It's not okay. She also actually seems hesitant when I tell her that it's really disrespectful if the horse wants to graze while I'm leading him. She seems like she's the one with less experience.
This video is great! I don't own a horse but I may try some of the techniques with my dog. I'll try not to wrap the leash around my hand so I don't get dragged. Thanks for the video!
What about ones that won't keep the distance between you and them so they're nearly stepping on your feet or their head is at your face?

Awesome vid! I have a 22 yo Rocky Mountain in my care now. Ive never owned a horse so even though being around and riding horses, ive never learned all these basics. Hes gaining weight and ive been walking him each evening and hes quite a good mannered boy, but has some space issues. Ill try these out!

I love your videos! I can personally attest to the dangers of looping the rope through your fingers. When I did this and my horse at the time took off, the rope wrenched around my finger. I broke it, bad, and needed surgery.
Your videos are very helpful and informative. It would be helpful for me if you could do a video on something that is very basic to you probably.... I'd like to see all of the gear thats used for riding and training with the proper name an explanation of what it's used for and how it is specific for each horse. Maybe I'd quit calling it "the thingy "... lol 😆

1:56 this explains a lot of the issues I’ve had. I’ve been working on a farm for a couple months and I’ve never understood why I struggle so much with leading. It’s because I’m walking either ahead or behind the horse.

This is helpful but what about if they lag behind you?
What is the patting for? Does the horse like it? Why would a horse like patting? Is it comforting? If so, why would it be comforting? Essentially, patting is hitting to animals even though it's not hard. What is accomplished by patting?

Where I have the horse relative to me when leading, well it depends. If it is a single file trail and I am leading, the horse will be behind me.

Hey! Love the video, just have a question. I've been doing liberty training and I'm at the point where I still need a lead rope sometimes but am try to break that habit. What you recommend I do with the lead rope because my horse is pretty on and off with listening?

Great tips! I just bought my first horse and have her at my home until May when she goes to training. I'm new to horses and it's overwhelming but I'm learning a lot about her and what we need to work on. She has nipped me once in the back on my arm after asking her to do an exercise. She had been a pet for 2 years that received a lot of treats😂 shes 19 years old and been around the block. She tends to be disrespectful when i brush her or when she is being pet. When I start brushing her she ear pins and swings her head towards me, I push her head back forward and keep and eye on her. She seems to be fine after a bit of brushing and me pushing her head forward. Is there anything else to do when she does this? I know it will take time for her to respect me. Thank you so much!
Any advice on walking your horse down a corridor if you will, between two pens,...no room for ground work just walking back n forth. How to work with horse that gets excited in confined areas?

I recently got a 10.3h Shetland cross and he’s really good with most things but he always tries to eat grass when I’m leading him. I have tried to lunge him and stuff like you did on the video but he’s a rescue and is terrified of the whip whenever I get it out and hates being lunged (again I think this is something to do with his past life). Just wondering if there’s anything else I could try to prevent him from doing this?

He is also a Shetland..smarter than the average horse..I know I grew up with ponies..I love them.. persist..you will get there.

@jemimakettlewell5360, my horse had similar behavior. The neighbor where my horse was raised said that there was a man who used to beat her with a lunging whip. A friend who trains horses came to help me. He used just the end of a long lead rope.The free end that isn't attached to the halter is swung around in circle(like fan blades move). That worked better to communicate with less fearful reaction from my horse. Now she walks around with me at liberty when I walk my pastures to check for poisonous weeds & check fence line. Keep at it, time will help if you are calm & persistent. After you have established a good measure of trust, then try to slowly presenting the lunge whip, you can use it to scratch the itchy spots or rub the neckline to show it isn't scary when YOU hold it. Carmella probably has a video on all this. I just want to encourage you not to loose hope & keep trying.
Another big no-no is holding the lead rope close to the horse's chin. If people do that, they do not understand the fundamentals of pressure and release.
Horses hurt. I have a hurt a horse and her name is cupcake and we have a little worse than his name is red when we leave the red inside in the the cage cupcake starts to get wild and today I started a driver did you start of the wire so I left to go and my mom was there so I started to cry, because it scared me when she does that and I do not like😢😢

YOU don’t show how to use the lunge lead
Sorry 100% wrong. In Australia we have the best horseman in the world. If you are holding a horse by the chin it is pressure. The horse should be on a loopy long lead behind and out of your space when walking. If it shys it doesn't land on you or over you. This can be taught with the yoyo game. Also horses that are trained to be next to you phychologically when scared want to jump in your space. Horses lead behind at distance develop a more independent mind. Horse trainers worst nightmare is training a horse that had been lead close or by the beard as they are far more dangerous than one taught to lead behind on a loopy rein. And where is the pressure and release? Horses learn from the release of pressure. Pressure for doing the wrong thing release for the right thing. If pressure is constant there is no learning or refinement.
