Singular and plural nouns in English - Plural spelling - Irregular plurals - Very basic English
This video is about a very basic English grammar lesson: singular and plural nouns.
A singular noun refers to one thing, and a plural noun refers to multiple things. "Car" is singular. "Cars" is plural. The general rule is that most English nouns can be plural by adding an "s" to the end. However, there are some spelling rules that a learner should keep in mind, for example, what to do with the following nouns that:
- ends in s, ch, sh, x, z. These nouns need an -es suffix. Example: bus - buses
- ends in -f, -fe: remove f/fe, add -ves. Example: knife - knives
- ends in VOWEL + y: add -s Example: key - keys
- ends in CONSONANT + y: add -ies. Example: party - parties
- ends in VOWEL + o: add -s. Example: radio - radios
- ends in CONSONANT + o: add -es. Example: tomato - tomatoes
Also, there are irregular nouns that do not change their form when they are in the plural, for example: fish - fish. There are a few irregular nouns that need to be learnt as their plural form is arbitrarily different from the singular form, like child - children or ox oxen.
