Underdogs: Come for the memes, stay for listening to 4 dudes misunderstand physics
Peter got it exactly right tho
@@majava5282 sort of? “if you drop two things at different weights at the same time, they’ll fall at the same rate” is ONLY true in a vacuum because there is no air resistance. a heavier car would definitely go down a ramp faster than a lighter car, though.
@@pedrobarrera7121 He said that the thing that changed that was wind resistance. He wasn't misunderstanding it (much)
Peter said not accounting for air resistance, but we would also need to account for friction and inertia of the cars, broadly speaking hes right however in the hill example.
@@majava5282 the question was a heavier car goes faster downhill irl, not in a vacuum. So Peter was infact wrong

Jackson is actually right about the cars rolling downhill. Source: I have a physics degree.
Explanation: If we were talking about blocks sliding down a slope with no friction, Peter would be right. They would have the same acceleration (a = F/m) because the force (gravity) is proportional to the mass. You can also think in terms of energy conservation. The initial energy is mgh, and the final energy is 1/2mv^2, so the mass cancels out and the speed is always equal. However, cars have wheels, and that turns out to be really important in this problem. Some of the energy that the cars started with will go into spinning the wheels instead of moving the car forward. This amount of energy is the same for both cars at a given speed, assuming the wheels are identical. Since the heavier car starts with more energy (mgh is bigger), the energy taken to spin the wheels is a smaller fraction of its total energy. So the ratio of its translational kinetic energy to its mass is higher, and it moves faster. Air resistance plays no role as long as the cars are the same shape and size. I think Mark Rober has a good video about this in regard to Pinewood Derby racing.
I'll add that considering two cars racing on a flat surface with identical engines is a different matter, and in this case the heavier car would be slower. It would have a lower acceleration because it has more mass while the force from the engine is the same, and it would also have a lower top speed because of friction in the axels.
Huh i learned more here in a random you tube comment than school
I'm glad someone said it. I thought I was crazy agreeing that heavier cars carry more potential energy at the top of a hill.
Yes I found someone explaining it cause yes the car with more weight goes down faster (we should not forget tho that if you have a car with more power wich is lighter that it can indeed go faster than the heavier one thanks to drag it makes a very frail balance)
Thanks Nathan

Ignoring friction and air resistance, two cars of different mass going down a slope would accelerate at the same rate. Despite the force of gravity(weight) W=mg being stronger on the heavier car (what Jordan says, and is correct about), the acceleration on the two cars would still be the same due to Newton’s second law F=ma (what Peter says, and is also correct about). The only factor on the acceleration of the car is hence the steepness of the slope as the mass of the car cancels out in the calculations.
Also Jackson is the funniest underdog :)
The force of air resistance has a much larger effect on the deceleration of a smaller mass than a larger one because of F=ma. So the paper car would have a really small downhill terminal velocity compared to an aerodynamic heavy rock.
Not really, because if you put equal force on each car, the heavier one would go faster, this is because you need to calculate torque acceleration which would be greater on the heavier car. Your equation and conclusion is correct if the object was thrown or fell, as without air resistance they would be equal because mass does not effect speed in these equations.
@@rmlgaming2091 also in his equation air resistance is ignored
@@rmlgaming2091 Hopcat said something about ignoring air resistance and I'm too bad at actual physics to put anything into account
From this and other sources I've seen, rolling downhill and air resistance makes this question more complex than a simple "all things fall at the same rate". Heavier objects/people will be pulled harder (cubed) than the increase in air resistance (square), and will thus go faster downhill. Peter may be making simplifying assumptions, but there's no way he gets to drag Jordan that hard when Jordan is actually right given real-world conditions.

Gonna be honest, Peter's 100% right about the car acceleration thing. No matter how heavy an object is (ignoring rind resistance), it accelerates at 9.81 m/s^2. This is because the force exerted on an object due to gravity is directly proportional to its mass, but the acceleration of an object due to a force is directly proportional to 1/(mass). This cancels out, so all acceleration is the same.
From this and other sources I've seen, rolling downhill and air resistance makes this question more complex than a simple "all things fall at the same rate". Heavier objects/people will be pulled harder (cubed) than the increase in air resistance (square), and resist friction more because of their higher mass, and will thus go faster downhill. Peter may be making simplifying assumptions, but there's no way he gets to drag Jordan that hard when Jordan is actually right given real-world conditions.

@Kirb when he said ignore wind resistance I think that just includes all types of friction, and presuming the cars were the same shape the friction on them would be the same, no matter what they are made of. Friction wouldn't make that much of a difference anyway though.
@@MrLacrosseification gallilao proved this in the 16th century and friction is proportional the the normal contact force Which is proportional to weight so no heavy objects dont resist friction better because they also generate more friction
Wind resistance isn't the only kind of friction. If you ignore air and all other friction yeah sure. But Peter only mentioned air resistance.
@@chriscampion7545 OK, maybe heavier objects don't resist friction more. But the square-cube relationship between the increase in friction and the increase in downward force due to mass means that heavier objects roll downhill faster.

"There will be a resultant force which will be proportional to the mass of the object. Hence an object with greater mass feels greater force than the other one. So even if the slope is same for both objects, a massive object moves faster through the slope than a less mass object." -google
In a vaccuum Hopcat is right. In the real world however, a heavier object is able to overcome friction easier than a lighter object of comparable size and shape.
Poppt1 was really popping off in this video
Hopcat is correct in a world where the there is no air resistance or friction and the cars just side down the hill. But in a real world case where there is air resistance and the cars are rolling Popit is correct. Look at pinewood derby cars. The fastest car down hill is the heaviest car with the lightest wheals.

Actually Peter is right due to the laws of physics, having a bowling ball and a basketball and drop at the same time, will still make it so that both land and get to the ground at the same time, and also the heavier it is, the more force you will need to accelerate and makes the car have less acceleration but greater velocity, there is your physics
From this and other sources I've seen, rolling downhill and air resistance makes this question more complex than a simple "all things fall at the same rate". Heavier objects/people will be pulled harder (cubed) than the increase in air resistance (square), and will thus go faster downhill. Instincts are sometimes more correct than super-oversimplified rules we learned in physics. These videos are the drug i need in my life.
peter… physics lesson: with momentum depends on mass and acceleration. the higher the mass, the higher the momentum. so yes, weight has an effect on speed when something is rolling down a hill
I liked the chill vibe in this one, nice break from the usual craziness
Most (upwards of 70%) iron and steel is recycled because its faster, cheaper, and more efficient. Virgin iron is still made, but usually used to supplement recycled materials.
Heavier objects will typically reach a higher top speed than lighter objects, despite accelerating at the same rate. Heavier objects will continue to accelerate past the lighter object's terminal velocity. The size of the objects and the shape is important as it affects the air resistance
So buying new is like buying 70% second-hand in terms of materials then?

As a boy scout who got way into pinewood derby as a cub scout: the heavier car rolls down the hill faster. Sorry Peter
Peter is the king of being confidently incorrect
From an energy perspective, potential energy is mgh and it is entirely converted to kinetic energy 1/2mv^2. At top speed and the bottom of the hill, if the cars start at the same height, mass is cancelled. This is neglecting air resistance or friction. However, friction would be a lot higher on a heavier car, but the rolling resistance to start the cars tires rolling would be overcome quicker on the heavier car, so that may be a little more complicated than necessary. Sometimes it’s a bit counterintuitive, but with some simplifying assumptions, the physics equations help clarify things.
