My wife's uncle was on MTB 344. He was sunk 4 times: the first time was HMS Calcutta off Crete and after the third sinking put on MTBs as an "easier" task. He survived his 4th sinking and lived to his 80s. MTB was used by the Small Forces raiding party and got up to some serious mischief. Uncle was the WT operator.

My dad was served on Hms Ekins with the 16th Destroyer Flotilla based at Harwich and used to go out with boats like this every other night hunting E boats and he said it was " hairy"

What ever happened to the MTB that was in an entrance just before the main entrance to the hospital there.
As you go down the road it was on the left before Haslar hospital.
    It was totally unique.
Never seen one this shape. She has a rounded front deck to the bow . This was from the superstructure forward. Made of wood planks.
It was there for years .Definitely a one off. I have never ever seen another like it.

That sounds like it might have been one of the older boats search British TBs or coastal attack craft.. from 1914 on .

Would love to see a full size documentary about these valiant men in their high powered boats.

@@timgilfedder The Vosper 60ft type in this video was powered by twin Isotta Fraschini petrol engines each rated at 1,150 bhp at 1,800 rpm, the MTBs could attain a maximum speed of 39 knots and a steady cruising speed of 35 knots. Each carried about 1,500 gallons of fuel which gave them a range of 450 miles. MTB 71 had a crew of 2 officers and 8 men.

Later versions were powered by 3 motors : eg. "Motor Torpedo Boat (MTB) 379 was the prototype of a new Royal Navy design for a 73-foot fast attack flush decked wooden MTB combining torpedo and heavier gun armament. Chief designer was Commander Peter du Cane, Managing Director of Vosper Ltd, Portsmouth, UK. Power was provided by three 1400 horsepower Packard petrol engines. Top speed was 39 knots at full power. Armament was four 18-inch torpedo tubes, one 20mm Oerlikon gun and two .303 machine guns."
