What I just realised is how beautiful the Shutter Button really is. Let me explain. First I used decoupled AF and had a Soft Release Shutter Button attached to it. But without a strap it's a struggle to operate with a Back Button AF one handed ... and it's really unsafe, even with the Smallrig Grip. So I reconfigured the AF back to the Shutter Button but it was impossible for me to hit and hold just focus. I was more likely to immediately take a picture. I already was about to give up because I thought the Shutter Button had no noticeable first step for the AF which annoyed me a lot. But then I tried without the Soft Release Shutter Button and what can I say ... I'm never going to use the Soft Release Shutter Button ever again. Not only that the AF step is noticeable, it is such a satisfying feeling to use this metal and polished Shutter! That's something I wasn't used to anymore ... the closest to it was maybe my M9 and the X-Pro 1. But most of the time I had used modern SLR's, DSLR's and Mirrorless. I did not expect that I could ever enjoy a Shutter that much and now I think that I probably just didn't realize it on my M9 and X-Pro 1. For now I only got the 28m/2.8. I also got the grip, found the one on the camera too shallow even for my small hands.
Hi, What are your thoughts between the Nikon Zf and the Fujifilm X-T5 ?. I am looking to buy one, but can't decide. (I have no lenses for either). Thanks.
@@pimpthyride XT5 is a bit cheaper, crop sensor and no fully articulated screen. Both cameras will give you that retro style, the Zf will hold its value longer and most Nikon S line lenses are great. Plus Zf being a full frame and has the same processor as Z9 and Z8 which will be great for video.
I just had my hands-on on a Zf during my visit of a local Nikon show room and I love it. I own a black Zfc with the original hand grip from Japan, so I was really curious to see how it compared. Surprisingly, it was lighter than I anticipated and easier to hold without the grip than the Zfc. I'm so crazy about this camera, but I also am not sure, because the Zfc is so much smaller and lighter with the 16-50 DX lens and the 26mm pancake which I usually use with it. I also think selling it so early is wasteful, as I will lose value. On the other hand... life is short...

@@TouchLifeStudio Taking short clips through an event to piece together for say the organization whatsapp group or social media. Its painful actually. Thanks for the kind word, PD! Yes, the Zf camera is not an everyday work horse and certainly probably takes the last place when it comes to ergonomics. But when it comes to everyday, in a bag camera, it defiantly meets that need. And thats what I wanted to have camera on me more often. My Z9 and the Z6II is not something I want to bring around. As far as Z6III, I agree with many of your points and I think it will be something special and will check boxes for many event photographers. I hope it will NOT exceed 36 MP and I would love to see Nikon implement the Sony’s new screen which tilts and swivels, but I’m not sure whether it was pattened. .
@@TouchLifeStudio I understand and agree with your thoughts here. The Z6 III will have a screen like the Zf if the Sony one is patented, but it will likely be like the Zf anyway as there are economies of scale in having similar parts on multiple products. The Sony screen does seem to be the best design at the moment - I guess Nikon can't be the very best at everything! lol
It will be hard to sell the z6iii if Nikon decides to bring out a z5ii with a BSI sensor. Imagine a $1300 brand new BSI sensor camera with the new Expeed 7 processor. That would be game changer and would bring more new users to Nikon.
That would be great! But I do not think that it would make it hard to sell the Z6III. The Z6III in that case would likely be a stacked sensor if the Z5II were BSI an/or would definitely be more MP in the 30's as opposed to the 24MP that Z5 would likely be, and most importantly Z6III would be a much more competent video camera, and have the CF E B card that the Z5II likley would not @@WidePhotographs
The fully functional screen is a big plus when the camera is attached to various astronomical telescope types. A scope pointed skywards on many mounts makes it impossible to see a fixed screen. Also old style knobs with white lettering is a big plus when in the dark and not having to touch screen menus when wearing gloves. Astrophotography folks will know what I am talking about. I have a Z611 and don’t use it on my many scopes because the screen is nearly in a difficult position. Southern Cross Observatory-Tasmania 42 South.
Considering saving up for this one! I usually use my Nikon FM2 but I'm a bit to trigger happy and film is expensive 😅 I love nature and animal photography and this camera looks like it's going to be a good alternative ✨
I have manual AIS lens amd AF and AFD lens that use the screwdriver interface which won’t auto focus even with the FTZ. I’m not sure the ZF is for me maybe I should just buy the fujifilm GFX 50s11 as I can mount the Nikon lens on Gfx.
Sold my GFX 100s to switch to this haha. It's amazing. Love that I can use all of my F lenses with an actually solid adapter. But you really need to get a grip for it. Any lens bigger than the 40mm z lens is just not fun. Other than that I love this camera.
@@TouchLifeStudio yeah no doubt! It's incredible how sharp and free of chromatic aberrations they are! never thought i'd see the day when i didn't feel the need to buy flag ship lenses. incredible times we're living in haha.
I am a street photographer, I always use Z50mm F1.8 lens. it is heavy. So the good handling is very important. I don't want people pay attention at my camera. Photo quality is number one. I still think Leica camera is number one good outlook.
I do like the 50 mm 1.8 lens, I have done a number of street shoots on my channel with it. Maybe consider the 40 mm f2, also a great lens and looks too.
Just an info maybe for one of your future reference to the Nikon Zf: I tried to use it today on a self timer 10 seconds but most of the times the camera would fire after 2 seconds not 10 seconds.
Sensor shield (as far as I know) has only been around about 5 years, R5 might have been the first, I could be wrong. I suggest just follow best practices when changing lenses. Keep camera sensor down when changing lenses and don’t turn camera against the wind when sensor is exposed. Hope this helps.
It's not really an upgrade, its a totally different design, Its not replacing the Z6ii . Most are going to want the traditional design with more custom buttons, toggle etc Its too big for vlogging, Not ideal for wildlife and sports though capable. Its wonderful for those that love it for what it is which is incredible camera but more aimed at street photography and MF lenses . Its certainly not an upgrade from anything , its a design all of its own and an indication of whats coming in the z6/7 iii
I fully agree that Z6III will have more to offer from the tech aspect but for those who have been shooting with dslrs and Z5/Z6 this camera is much more in tech. The only area where Zf is NOT a runner up is ergonomics. Everything else is much better than previous versions of Nikon, except for Z8/Z9.
While I ghink it is not an upgrade to yhe z6, I do think that even if this camera with its retro look, looks like the retro style photography camera, I think it might be nikon most versatile camera at enthusiasts price point. I mean the combination of the very good 24 megapixel camera and the very very powerfull xpeed 7, makes a very fast and capable camera. If you are a pro wildlife and sport photographer, you would preferably use thd z8 and z9. But this camera has still fantastic focusing speed, low light and nice frame rate to be useful doing some action photography. You will need a cage/grip, not the best, but much better than any camera we had at this price before in ff. Lastly video with 10 bit log on this sensor will also be very very nice.
@@TouchLifeStudio I’ll agree to most of the points you made on the Zf however, I would have liked to see it come with RAW capabilities, even externally and a full size HDMI to make it perform a bit better than the Z6 II. We know the sensor can do this as it was available on the Z6 II, I believe it is an upgrade in a lot of areas but, missing some that I would have expected/wanted over the Z6 II. If I do end up getting one, some day, I’ll want a brown, gray or green version.
Yes, the Zf has a micro HDMI. There is really not whole lot of benefit to you use Ninja V. If you need a larger screen, Atomos Shinobi or other external monitor would be fine and cheaper. The Zf has great internal recording functions now.
@@TouchLifeStudio Thank you! My only concern would be that the Zf only writes to one card. The Ninja would be used so I can also write a backup for my paid work.
You answered my question about how good the IBIS for video recording, i was hoping it will be close to what available in camcorder but still not there yet, thanks
I would consider this camera as a b-camera for weddings. I fully understand someone who shoots weddings the importance of fast changing scenes and need to adjust camera exposure values. But as a b-cam, Zf would work well (with Small rig grip).
I don’t see why not. Zf has slow shutter settings (bulb mode) and you just need a proper lens for astro photography. Keep in mind, Zf is a 24 MPX camera.
@@TouchLifeStudio Great. I still haven't seen any reviews mentioning it or any sample photos. 24 mpx is more than enough, I guess. Still torn between this and Z8 though (an amateur here)
Honest opinions, should I just settle for the Nikon Z6ii used for $1300 or continue to save for the new Nikon Zf? I do not want the z5 which is on sale brand new for $999 because it does not have a BSI sensor. I am not a professional photographers but I would like to make my hobby to a career one day.
While I love both cameras, and if for someone who is just starting, I still suggest the Z6II (based on your budget) as it is an awesome camera and I can do most of my professional work. Ergonomically Z6II is better than Zf. Where you will spend more is lenses. However, if budget is not an issues, Zf is better from the newer tech standpoint, but both cameras have the same 24.5 MP sensor and have newly identical image quality. Hope this helps.
@@TouchLifeStudio thanks for your feedback. I decided to buy the used z6ii because I forgot I need to buy a lens too lol . I went with the 50mm f/1.8 Z lens. It’s on sale for $529. I know the Zf has the bigger improvements with auto focus due to the new processor and will actively continue to get firmware updates to improve it further. But for $1900, I got myself a brand new Z 50mm f/1.8 lens and a used mirrorless camera that has a BSI sensor. I just hope when the used z6ii arrives, it doesn’t have electronic issues for the next 2 years lol. BH Photo says it has taken 7,500 shutters so far. Not sure what that means but sounds a lot.
@@WidePhotographs great combo. This was actually my very first combo as well. I have a number of videos on my channel where I cover the z6II+50mm 1.8 S.. again great choice. best of shooting to you...
@@TouchLifeStudio quick update, the used z6ii I bought from BHPhoto was no good. The viewfinder was not working. Asked for a RMA. This is a sign for me to be patient and wait for the z5ii, z6iii or a discount sale on the Zf.
They weren't retro cameras when I was shooting with them! 🙄 How much of the viewfinder can be customized? I.E. can a lot of the details in the display be turned off?
Oh yes, there is much that can be customized with the EVF. It’s the same as with the LCD back screen. Whatever is on the screen is what is displayed within the EVF.
@@TouchLifeStudio Thanks for that info. I'm hoping to get my hands on one tomorrow. As a decades-long Nikon shooter the Zf has appeal. My beloved "Poor Man's Leica" Fuji X-Pro 2 is aging and will need to be replaced. I truly dislike the X-Pro 3 and seeing it may be time add this one to my D750 bodies.
Cannot auto focus with Nikon AF and AfD lenes that use the screw drive to focus. I have a lot of these lenes and disappointed Nikon has not made an adapter for these
It's a bit heavier than my FX30, which is my vlog camera although, I used the Z8 more when I'm out and about, lol. I like it but, I look at it as what the Z6 II should have been with some things still lacking. For me it's a bit of a downgrade in terms of video capabilities, no RAW, no 6K, mini HDMI port and adding the grip makes it even more heavier than the FX30.
@@waynerm002 it’s sounds like video is priority for you (based on your comment). The FX30 is a great camera and mainly for video. The point of Zf is that it’s amazing in photo mode and does a fabulous job in video and can be totally used for as b-camera for photo and video. But I’m glad to hear that you use multiple systems (Nikon and Sony) and I’m sure that adds value to your work.
I am just so comfortable with the ergonomics of the Z5, having more buttons and better placement. The only upgrade for me would be the processor and firmware. I do love the top dials very much, but dislike the shutter button and prefer z8 LCD mechanics.
@@TouchLifeStudio Yep, video spec is more important to me today, I prefer the feel of the Z8’s grip and would like to see Nikon do a Z6 III with even more performance in both areas. I’m in South East Asia these days and when I record my videos, I typically do a long take and edit later. In that area I prefer the FX30 as I don’t get any hot card or camera warning (A7R V and Z8 does), I traded the A7R V for the Z8 with increased video specs and photo capabilities, should the need arise, plus it felt better in the hands (would be nice to have the A7R V’s screen on the Z8) than the Sony. Will Nikon make a hybrid camera with a fan? I hope so. I do like the Zf and the features it has, I may get one but, it doesn’t call to me like the FX30, A7R V and Z8 did. I figure Nikon will do a firmware update to include some of the features of the Zf in the Z9/8, I’ll wait for those.
In regards to the use of my D810 EN-EL 15 batteries on the Zf, I can say that depending on the manufacturing date, older batteries (2012) did not work. Newer batteries that I have ( 2015) worked. Just my grain of salt. Best regards.
Wow… very surprising it did not work but still works on d810. On another hand, it’s been over 10 yrs and if still works…pretty amazing for a small battery.
They make a throwback camera like this, but throwback lenses aren't compatible due to no screw drive on the adaptors. There are no presets either, which is a really pathetic omission.
Yep you are right. There are a few more cameras that have the same battery. The point here was that there are many previous Nikon cameras that share the same battery size. Thx for watching.
Would be a waste for me I don't do video. It's fairly large for a mirrorless camera (ive seen one),at my age 65 I'm downsizing even with cars etc. Finally I like the PASM dial and would never go back to the akward old style on the fingers. It's a younger persons camera with more money than sense
Note that they give you a trash camera compared to the Z6II like without support for a CF/B memory card and also a grip from the 60's as if the world of photography has not progressed haha, it's a joke And let's not talk about connections etc.
I own both cameras Z6II and Zf and in my experience the Zf is much more of a camera than Z6II. The only place where the Z6II wins is in ergonomics. For the most part Zf has much more of a camera.
Visited my local camera shop today and was thinking about buying on. Picked it up hold it for about 2 minutes and put my debit card back in my wallet. The first think everyone talks about is the design and that is what kept me from buying it. Just shot a charity event was running and going from 6 pm till 11 pm. I could not be bothered imagine doing that with this camera. I don’t won’t 50 year old ergonomics. I don’t want nostalgic, retro. Give me command wheels and comfortable ergonomics. The only thing that interested my in this camera was the improved auto focus. Was hopping I could stand how it feels in the hand till the Z6III comes it. The design was a deal breaker for me.
I just got the zf. And after 15 years as only Nikon in really thinking about Sony. It's so stupid how bad this camera ergonomics were made just to look old that it tells me Nikon is done. They just don't get the customer anymore. Sony is freaking just everything I want all in one.
You’re not wrong but I don’t think it’s that bad with the small rig grip. The main reason for me is that horrible articulating screen, that’s made for TH-camrs not photographers.
The small fast prime lenses are still not available, which defies for me the use of this camera. Take for instance the 50 1.8. it is massive. But the fz is a beautiful camera tough.
People who buy the Zf are those who love the retro style but also as times are changing many more are using it for vlogs. So the market is expanding and camera manufacturers are aware of that and giving us the fully articulated screen. Hope this helps.
Sorry, I could not like your video. I have bought two Zf kits but you lost me when you compared the Yashica Electro 35, which I also own, with the Zf. The ZF is loosely based on SLR cameras but the Yashica is a Range-finder.

Reason not to get the ZF: going poor because all the money I spent on buying all these beautiful manual focus lenses. 😅 Appreciate your videos!
Thanks. Manual lenses are awesome.
Thanks for your feedback. I can see how fully articulated screen is a plus for your use case.
I like the chrome shutter button better than the red shutter button
Considering saving up for this one! I usually use my Nikon FM2 but I'm a bit to trigger happy and film is expensive 😅 I love nature and animal photography and this camera looks like it's going to be a good alternative ✨
This would be a great choice.
Agree. Need a grip for larger lenses. Image quality with Z lenses that are S-line is amazing with this camera
@@TouchLifeStudio yeah no doubt! It's incredible how sharp and free of chromatic aberrations they are! never thought i'd see the day when i didn't feel the need to buy flag ship lenses. incredible times we're living in haha.
Thank you so much for these 15 reasons!!
You bet!
Thanks for posting this informative video!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks a lot dear brother. Going to upgrade from Nikon D810. And yes it was educational as well as entertaining.
Great 👍
Got the Zf
Just an info maybe for one of your future reference to the Nikon Zf: I tried to use it today on a self timer 10 seconds but most of the times the camera would fire after 2 seconds not 10 seconds.
I really hope you get to enjoy it.
I got the ZFC and honestly wish I have the ZF
Yep, Full frame!
I have been eyeing this camera!
Great camera! Good eye!
Hi, could you share the parameters of the new picture controls introduced on this camera? Thank you
I didn't know Michael Cera was so into photography!!! Lol Great video BTW!!
Ha-ha. Right?!
Great video, very comprehensive.
Glad it was helpful!
Please suggest a few lenses for zf for sports , specially football
I use 70-200 f2.8, which is great for Friday night late games under lights.
@TouchLifeStudio Thank you for the update
Thank you for your review on the Nikon Zf
My pleasure
the only problem for me about ZF is the missing sensor shield that I have on my Z8! any solution?
Sensor shield (as far as I know) has only been around about 5 years, R5 might have been the first, I could be wrong. I suggest just follow best practices when changing lenses. Keep camera sensor down when changing lenses and don’t turn camera against the wind when sensor is exposed. Hope this helps.
Thanks Michael Cera!
@TouchLifeStudio I agree but this style is not going to be for everyone or a replacement for the z6 . Those people will be waiting for the z6iii
This will be an upgrade from my D750 - totally depends on where you’re coming from.
Excellent review. Thanks.
U did good job I just got it.
You should start off by stating this is NOT a Nikon Ad.
Ha-ha, sponsored by me and my time.
Thank you for good information
Welcome
Great content! Do you have any experience with shooting video with an Atmos Ninja attached?
Yes, the Zf has a micro HDMI. There is really not whole lot of benefit to you use Ninja V. If you need a larger screen, Atomos Shinobi or other external monitor would be fine and cheaper. The Zf has great internal recording functions now.
@@TouchLifeStudio Thank you! My only concern would be that the Zf only writes to one card. The Ninja would be used so I can also write a backup for my paid work.
I'll trade my Sony A7RV just for this beauty 😍
A7RV has its own beautiful qualities
That’s a significant downgrade 😮
I´ll buy it if they make a silver one, like the FM I used to have, long long time ago.🤗
I actually had the same throught. I do like silver top, but I guess Nikon decided against that.
You answered my question about how good the IBIS for video recording, i was hoping it will be close to what available in camcorder but still not there yet, thanks
Can you use the new battery in older cameras?
I would wait for the Z6III !
I hope it is coming in 2024
Great!
Would love to buy this camera but I can't because the buttons are hard to make exposure value changes when shooting weddings
I would consider this camera as a b-camera for weddings. I fully understand someone who shoots weddings the importance of fast changing scenes and need to adjust camera exposure values. But as a b-cam, Zf would work well (with Small rig grip).
@@TouchLifeStudio I also have a Z6 at the moment
Can i use Nikon ZF for interior and architecture photography? Please replied me, I’m wondering to purchase this camera
Absolutely. Just need wide lens.
Thank you for the summary. One question. What desktop tripod and head is that?
This one : th-cam.com/video/VicgZfucR18/w-d-xo.htmlsi=UWih_LdpB-11XRtr
Yes I understand it better cameras for better feacherd
Can this camera do light astro, say like milky way and stars?
I don’t see why not. Zf has slow shutter settings (bulb mode) and you just need a proper lens for astro photography. Keep in mind, Zf is a 24 MPX camera.
@@TouchLifeStudio
Great.
This is a sign for me to be patient and wait for the z5ii, z6iii or a discount sale on the Zf.
very nice !
I don't like the form factor. I'm waiting for the Z6III.
It’s coming…
So is xmas.....
Man those black and white portraits. Which lens did you shoot those with?
50mm 1.8 S lens
I have the Nikon D810 should I buy the Nikon f????
Cannot auto focus with Nikon AF and AfD lenes that use the screw drive to focus. I have a lot of these lenes and disappointed Nikon has not made an adapter for these
Another reason not to update.. I don’t have the money to buy one. But, if you pay me, I can both buy and upgrade it. Meanvile, I use my D500.
D500 is one of my favorite DSLR cameras
The 10 bit is 4:2:2?
Nikon Zf with External Recording mode is 4.2.2 8/10 bit via HDMI. Hope this helps.
@@TouchLifeStudio so in camera is 4:2:0?
Olá! Ela tem n log?
Are you upgrading to Nikon Zf? Or are you still on a fence? What's holding you back?
@@mjr333 I agree, ergonomics of Z5 is better than Zf.
Tech is always evolving…
z6 and z7 have anothe battery..z5 have en-el 15c... but for some reason about z5 never say... dont now why...
Yep you are right. There are a few more cameras that have the same battery. The point here was that there are many previous Nikon cameras that share the same battery size. Thx for watching.
I have the camera is great
Glad to hear that.
Would be a waste for me
I don't do video. It's fairly large for a mirrorless camera (ive seen one),at my age 65 I'm downsizing even with cars etc.
Finally I like the PASM dial and would never go back to the akward old style on the fingers.
It's a younger persons camera with more money than sense
ZFC was just fine... But pretty low image quality with available Nikon plastic lens fare...
Now make 15 reasons why you shouldn't buy a ZF haha
You look like Michael Cera.
For all those waiting for z6iii it will be costlier than ZF
Most likely yes. I would say if the Zf was the Z6III, most people would be very happy.
❤🎉
Note that they give you a trash camera compared to the Z6II like without support for a CF/B memory card and also a grip from the 60's as if the world of photography has not progressed haha, it's a joke
And let's not talk about connections etc.
I own both cameras Z6II and Zf and in my experience the Zf is much more of a camera than Z6II. The only place where the Z6II wins is in ergonomics. For the most part Zf has much more of a camera.
sensor
Once you add the little L shape grip, ergonomics improve significantly with the Zf.
So why didn’t you buy the z8? You can see what you are getting. If you are comparing the Sony then the z8 is what compares to it body wise
I'm a PHOTOGRAPHER if I was remotely interested in shooting videos I'd buy a video camera
I understand, but Nikon needs to meet expectations of their customers, hence photo and video features added to more cameras.
Part of me thinks it would have been better with far less functionality and let it be cheaper, and just a street camera. Skip the video
If it had less functionality people would be complaining that it needs more.
Yeah.
Nice camera but not worth 2k!
Why to no upgrade??? 2400 eur for the body … f this)
TH-camrs assume that everyone shoots video. They don’t. An articulated screen is useful for TH-camrs, or wannabe TH-camrs. And no one else.
Yes, I have some concerns with the fully articulated screen as well, but very minor.
One reason not to upgrade. It has poor ergonomics and handling.
You are right!
You’re not wrong but I don’t think it’s that bad with the small rig grip. The main reason for me is that horrible articulating screen, that’s made for TH-camrs not photographers.
@@BoiseTDI, agreed. An X-T5 type would have been better
@@BoiseTDInot a reason not to buy it though.
The small fast prime lenses are still not available, which defies for me the use of this camera. Take for instance the 50 1.8. it is massive. But the fz is a beautiful camera tough.
Seriously, who is buying this thing to vlog with? Too big, too heavy, and so-so stabe… 😢
People who buy the Zf are those who love the retro style but also as times are changing many more are using it for vlogs. So the market is expanding and camera manufacturers are aware of that and giving us the fully articulated screen. Hope this helps.

Appeal to emotion is not an argument.
Sorry, I could not like your video. I have bought two Zf kits but you lost me when you compared the Yashica Electro 35, which I also own, with the Zf. The ZF is loosely based on SLR cameras but the Yashica is a Range-finder.
The point to comparing to Yashika is the retro element. But I can see that it may have come across the way you explained. Thanks for your feedback.
Too expensive the most compelling reason not to upgrade
