  • The modern site dumper is a hybrid between modern safety systems and an old design from the 80's
    Here is a few of my personal gripes with modern site dumpers and a few ideas on how they could be improved.

    Agreed Ollie. Site dumpers really have reached the limit of being engineered/modified to fit today's sites. Stuff like heated seat, cup holder, operator storage... These things should be standard on a modern machine. Operators who need to sit on these rain/snow/shine need better! I think what JCB, Thwaites, and others are doing with the cabbed dumpers is fab. Its definitely a step in the right direction. I had a chance to sit in one of the JCB dumpers and it immediately felt much better to be in.

      Wacker Nelson do a cracking dumper with the DV90 Duel view with air con radio etc alot safer to use than any of the others on the market @Ben

    We use Paus dumpers and in my opinion they are very good no matter if they are 20years old or new, only the acess is on the back which is something that not everyone likes.
    They have a better skip. You can start the enigne without sitting down, you have steel sheet roof on the roll over bar, which would protect you if you tip over in soft ground.

    Good video Ollie, agree with all your points , the main one for me being all this service light nonsense, I run a 3 ton terex dumper , it's a 2005, got it shot blasted and resprayed, new sticker set , it looks as good as any , simplicity, probably have no intention of changing it for anything newer because of all this , just more expense and more set backs for nothing , and as you point out the design has never changed anyways so as long as it looks fresh itll do the job and look the part as far as im concerned 👍

      Dumpers from that era will go on forever, they had decent engines and plenty of power without too much electronics - ideal for people like you and I to maintain. Keep it tidy, look after it and don't ever sell it! Nothing newer has improved on it in the last 17 years!

      Oh I've got some ideas! But sadly, the market dictates the forward tipping dumper must remain as cheap to buy as possible - so it can be hired out as cheap as possible. These factors limit the development of the product

    I have wondered about this, I don't see many small dumpers in the US they like skid steers instead so perhaps we should ditch the small dumper and just run skid steers? Plus they are other benifits with all the attachments etc

  • @uhtred7860
    @uhtred7860 ปีที่แล้ว

    Haven't seen a Dumper in years, havent been in the UK for a long time, but when did they get so big? I remember them as being much smaller and handier.

    • @Olliegunns
      @Olliegunns  ปีที่แล้ว

      They do even bigger ones than these too. This is a 6t - there are 9 and 10t forward tipping dumpers quite commonly on site now. Far too big for the concept - you cant see a thing going forwards! So now they make ones where the seat swivels and you can drive in reverse....

    I'd just be happy if those little site dumpers were more available in North America. I know 'wanker-neuson' makes them but they're apparently very expensive plus none of the rental outfits have even brought them in. We're always trying to do onsite hauling with ADT's that are too bloody big or on-road dump trucks that are forever getting stuck or damaged because they're too big and heavy.

    • @Olliegunns
      @Olliegunns  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I dont know why these dumpers seem to not be that popular over in the US or Canada. But in a similar way, we dont really use skid steers much over here in the UK. And even in Europe, working methods vary to how we work here. I find it really interesting to learn from other methods of doing the same job - the way you've always done it is not always the best way!

      They are Terex dumpers that have been rebranded to Mecalac for stronger name, dumper is still exact same.

    • @Olliegunns
      @Olliegunns  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes you are right. The new generation Mecalec dumpers look a whole lot better but these older designs being dragged into the 2020's just aren't up to scratch in my opinion. Of course price has a massive factor on how much a company is willing to put into a design and if people dont want to pay for the new generation kit - they will keep selling the older stuff as long as they can. Its a shame the UK hire market forces them to take this approach really

    Hi Olly, get an OBD reader - 2 way, to defeat the warning lights etc. A warning light and limp mode is not going to force the owners to do any more maintenance - I can't believe how bad some of the hired in plant is... Manufacturers seem to be a law unto themselves, who regulates the safety features on these machines? More modern stuff has electronic transmission locks and steering locks (a fiddly but effective bar and padlock on the Avant). Why are these machines not made safer and more secure? Cost. Until regs, like the Euro 5 engine emissions , come into play it seems site workers are expendable. I know of a operator that was crushed by a dumper and a farmer with one eye from unhitching a trailer from a tractor. Simple safety features would prevent so much - shame the camera is not working very well on this machine...

  • @fearlesswhetu4555
    @fearlesswhetu4555 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I agree 100% about your comments on the training. The training here is a joke. One day on a machine, pass a basic exam and off you go - 30 - 50 tonne machine no worries. There is no clear pathway to being an operator with skill unless you either grow up in the family business, buy your own machine or are in the right place at the right time with a boss who’s happy to teach. Not common.

    • @Olliegunns
      @Olliegunns  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's tricky with training as there are so many different applications for excavator operating. But a module type system where you can do the modules more applicable to the type of work you want/ need to do would go a long way to solving it. I could talk for hours on ideas I have to improve training in our industry - the current courses are lacking in so many ways.

    • @Olliegunns

      I dislike all forward tipping dumpers 6t and up for various reasons but the Mecalec/ Terex design is particularly bad! And the more stuff they bolt to it as a nod to technology or indeed "safety". The worse it gets! Just not thought out

  • @super6954

    Thanks for the video, there is a lot makes sense, but the bean counters will always say that designs kind of half worked for years profit first . The real worst thing is lots of guys design stuff and never drive it for any time let alone 3 months to find out " well isn't that just f'in annoying, maybe we should fix that and explain it to the bean counters better. Does that side panel have a lock ,if it does they are probably trying to stop kids dumping stuff in the tanks and not making a whole new hood in the process, bean counters again ! So instead they leave the brake open and give them a camera screen and expensive dash to smash with a brick, you couldn't make that up. 1 thing good i noticed is they finally took the generic Lucas key switch out, I bet 60% of the boys in my school year learned to drive and become proficient operators with a thwaites dumper like this on a site after hours. If you know what a bow tie shaped brick tie is They started them jamming the twisted wire joint tail in the switch and turn it. I learned on our farm with machines we owned in about 1985 if you're wondering L.O.L. I bet in 20 years the only fueled internal combustion engine running on site will be fitted to the generators charging all this battery junk they want to push now, and that will still have service traps built in ! Take care.

    You miss the big problem the skip is higher than the wheels to turn so making it top heavy will turn over easily I lost a good friend off one of them . Stick to the front tipper

    • @Olliegunns
      @Olliegunns  ปีที่แล้ว

      You are right, I think only JCB have tried to change the design of a forward tipping dumper and that wasn't very well received - so much so that they don't make the model anymore! The whole design needs updating for the modern safety rules and tighter sites - not just retrofitting something to the same old compromised design!

    • @michaelcoyne3700
      @michaelcoyne3700 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Olliegunns Yes the Hi-Viz dumper. Cool idea but soils would not leave the skip making it near useless in the UK, the biggest site dumper market in Europe.
