Really appreciated this, Doug. The DSP amp in my E39 has stopped working, and I'm trying to decide what to do about it. I've never found the sound quality to be that impressive, but this is a heck of a lot of work. I'd definitely go for different speakers and some kind of an Android head unit. They make some that match the BMW nicely.
Took me forever to figure out my speakers for my e38. The whole car is I mint condition, besides the radio and a whole mess of wires in the back lol but figured out what’s what last summer and finally putting my system in tomorrow. Shit is way to confusing compared to any other car😂
@@wgreen340 i had my tablet back in there for a minute. I started many other projects and never revisited the audio. I just recently got back to it. I bought my subs about 3 weeks ago and I'm working on the box. I'll have my radio final decision made by July.
Thanks for sharing the video. I have a 1996 E38 with DSP (the same black amplifier you got there), 4:3 screen at the front and an older radio unit C23 (not BM53/54). My radio is not currently working and the screen is completely blank, no orange lit up. I checked all the fuses, powers are going through the radio unit, CD changer and the DSP amplifier however no signal from the i-bus when i plugged into my OBD scanner. Any ideas what is causing the problem?
I like this! I ran a similar set up, rockforsage amp fit perfectly where the DPS trash goes. Cut the center of the upper trunk and added a shallow mount 10" JL audio sub. threw my radio in the glove box and I use the the pioneer app as a knob for the radio, works like a charm and looks OEM. If you figure out how to adjust the volume via steering buttons please share! That’s all that I couldn’t figure out
Hey Doug, great video here. I thought you said something about putting the stock head unit in the trunk but didn’t see it at the end, did you leave it out? I’m curious because I’ve got an E38 myself and my radio is cutting off every couple of minutes (which is about to drive me completely crazy) so I’m thinking of stripping everything factory with the audio and going completely aftermarket with two four channel amps running the speakers and head unit and a single two channel running a set of subs I’ve got. With a completely aftermarket setup I shouldn’t need the factory head unit anywhere in the set up, correct? I’ve looked all over forums online and haven’t found what I’m looking for. Thanks
The stock tuner stayed in the trunk. Since this video, I've redone the audio again. I need a new head unit at the moment. I'm probably going AVIN. I still have the same amps but all the speakers are different; both since m subs and interior. I've been incredibly busy and haven't made any new videos but when I'm done with the audio, I'll make an updated one.
@@DougBe38 take a look at the Alpine F-309 or the Pioneer DMH-WT8600NEX, they are both single DIN chassis with 9" and 10" floating screens. I have the Pioneer in my 2001 E38, however it's not for the "faint at heart" tons of features and adjustments and has wireless CarPlay. The Alpine is a little simpler, but no wireless CarPlay. You can add a wireless gizmo like CarLink-IT or Crux from Crutchfield to make a wireless CarPlay unit.
@@tonyg7847 I'm good on that. I prefer the factory look. As a matter of fact, it's time for a new deck now. I plan to get an AVIN deck. I just got one for my L322. Sound quality is superb. The functionality is great and easy to do. Android powered.
@@DougBe38 ok, check out Diamond Hex speakers and their amps as well. I went with this set up and it sounds really clean! My install guy modified the speaker enclosures in the front to accommodate 6 1/2” speakers and went with 5 1/4” stock size in the rear doors, all Diamond Hex old school.

Good works. A work around if u haven’t find it yet is to digitally connect on the canbus in the rear. At the cd changer connections of course.
Again good work tho. BMW tech as well we in MD now. Linxs up!
I'm good. I prefer aftermarket audio
Got ya what headunit ended up with

There's a module you can get for the steering wheel. I don't know which one. Since my factory tuner is still in the car, my controls work. 💪🏾
What the wire diagrams

Bluetooth sounds like garbage. No matter what. How's your ground?
Leave it black. Maybe paint the inside the same as the car would look nice
You need RCAs...
No, actually you don't. There are other ways to do it.
