Bloody stupid decision and action to close this railway station down. So convenient for anyone as far inland as Armidale to simply catch a train and arrive at the beach (Nobby's Beach is it's name). Who else has a train station right at the beach (
If you're heading to Newcastle anytime soon, you should check out the old The Store building. It's been closed/abandoned since late 2015 and is due for demolition some time (not sure when).
It wasn't Newcastle City Council that closed the railway from Wickham to Newcastle, it was a BLATANT ACT OF TREASON by a treacherous and traitorous Liberal party State Government. The Liberals, both at state level, and federally, have ALWAYS been traitors, founded as they were by arch-traitor, Pig Iron Bob Menzies. Time was when traitors were sentenced to death by firing squad. Normally I'm against the death penalty but for traitors it the ONLY appropriate penalty.
The reason they closed Newcastle station to Hamilton & had trains leaving from Hamilton was of two reasons : Ever since the earth quake Newcastle became a like a ghost city & Broadmedows was becoming the Central station as trains going southward or Northward bound would be like the Strathfield of Sydney , becoming a midway point for changes of different lines ! Even that has changed in Sydney there is no longer any half way point , everything is done on line ! Since the major earthquake Newcastle died & a mass of microcosm satellite shopping centres started appearing , so once a striving city successful & thrivingwas executed by business magnate corporations that killed off the tourist city by putting these shopping centres in the outer suburbs ! It's not only happening there but in Sydney , Brisbane & Melbourne too ! Council decided they needed to bring life back to Newcastle by introducing tourism with light rail & hospitality ! I came from around the area you guys live in Sydney but spent most of my teenage life in Newcastle living there & traversing to schoolsin Sydney ! What I can't understand is why do up these part of the line in time to only abandon it & turn it into parks , gardens & cafes ! I used to sleep in the women's restroom there all the time after I'd catch the Milkrun train from Sydney most week nights late & the guards were great by leaving me alone as they knew I had to catch a bus up north earlier in the morning ! Now Newcastle is a messyouhave nothing but office buildings & studio apartments in the heart of the city , where as there was always something scenic to see there ! It lost its soul , it lost its life & eventually it's character ! Newcastle is becoming like every other city now ! I last lived there three years ago & they were digging up Hunter Street for the new light rail & chatted with some of the construction crew , it just like Southport/ Coolangatta, they put a light rail in & theshopping precinct is almost a skeleton of ghosts ! So much for progress
the Newcastle line is classed as a branch line the closure of a branch line is nothing new it has been going on for decades all over Australia as this line was classed as redundant by the state government
+LMCSXurbex - It was closed in the name of "Urban Economic Development." The plan is to sell off the land of the railway corridor, as it is near the waterfront and extremely valuable. The plan is to replace the heavy rail link with an interchange further down the line and get buses to/from Newcastle. Future plans also include trams ("Rapid Urban Light Rail") It doesn't make sense to most of us living here in Australia - At the moment we're building new heavy railway lines in parts of Sydney which were served by railways until the 1960s. Even stranger, we're now in the first stages of rebuilding the tram network that we used to have until we were told to close them by American town-planners who said that it would be faster for everyone to drive their own motor cars.
Why they closed the station down? There's no reason for me! When I remember when I went to Newcastle the line to the station was in good condition! Why council or government!
Western Line Transport Vlogs Because council is dumb and would rather shut down a station and make a new terminus for light rail instead of closing two lines for light rail to use so that people can catch light rail link and the normal rail link
@@blink1821986 "Build a bridge and get over it" Yep. Take a leaf out of Victoria's book and elevate the line from just east of the road bridge going from Hunter Street, Newcastle West across to Maitland Road, Islington, Raise the track to 15 or 20 feet above ground by the time the line reaches Wickham Station at Stewart Avenue, elevate the platforms at Wickham and Civic Stations, then, from Merewether Street, bring the track back to ground level by the point of where the old Market Street level crossing used to be. Underneath the line could be extra parking space for cars, plus doing away with level crossings at Stewart Avenue and Merewether Streets, but this is common sense and the NSW State Liberal Government is TOTALLY DEVOID of common sense.
Newcastle City Council had nothing to do with the truncation of the railway. It was the State Liberal Government. Labour talked about it for years but like so many things in a safe Labour seat it was all talk. At last the two halves of our CBD can be joined.

well here we are 2020 so when did the station closed in 2014 well December 24 marks six years since it was terminated so the business people who got behind it having it removed be popping a few corks that night
@Labor NSW: Because you lot were weak and gutless in the face of the treasonous Liberals. Tim Krakenthorpe is a piss-weak MLA for Newcastle. The city needs someone like Bryce Gaudry as their MLA.

The craziness of the whole thing is that this line has been broken and will be replaced with light rail. Why?
this is now a restaurant according to social media the manager wanted the station closed by Christmas so she can set up her establishment ASAP
this is not long after they installed the opal readers then a month later they closed the station
Why was this closed?
When did it close?
they had a airport styled indicator board for destinations that didn't last long
I don't why the Newcastle council did that, grass the area. I fell this closing down of the station is a huge damage to economy of Australia
Belchy 94 Especially for a city like Newcastle. Councils aren't very smart with decision making

interesting back in 1973 they wanted to close the rail line but giving it a forty year repreive

Newcastle was mostly a ghost town before the earthquake. That just hurried things along.
@0:18 there you go new south wales movement prime real-estate there

Ok that's really interesting and so weird to get rid of a train to Newcastle. So weird there so dumb.
Electric railways are FAR superior to diesels...once it has been ripped up the townsfolk will regret it

Which Newcastle
@2:37 what a sad sight
