    I hope you enjoy this video. My thought was to not make a "TH-cam video" style video.... but to make something I would be proud of for years to come. About a year ago I was presented with an opportunity to go to a sea turtle conservation center in Costa Rica. There I met Valerie, an amazing conservation researcher who has a true passion for sea turtles. When I returned home I contacted Dr. Christine Finniger who taught me more. When the Cook Museum told me about their amazing opportunity with Kale the endangered Kemp's Ridley sea turtle, I was totally floored. I hope you enjoy this video as much as I enjoyed the experience.
    Also, this is the first time DJI has sponsored Smarter Every Day. The Mavic Mini is going to be a great tool for upcoming videos. I've already shot a couple of things for upcoming videos with it. If you'd like to signal to them that you're glad they've decided to sponsor Smarter Every Day it would be awesome if you'd consider going here: →bit.ly/3ePEAjS ← and use promo code KLDE2Q87JZU9
    to get 5% off when purchasing the DJI Mavic Mini or Mavic Mini Fly More Combo. They didn't tell me to put this in the comment section. I legitimately like the product and think you will too!
    As always, thanks for watching and supporting my efforts to learn all kinds of interesting things. I'm grateful for you.
    Regards,
    Destin

    1. Click on video
    2. Like the video
    3. See the video is 54 minutes long
    4. Pause video
    5. Get a snack
    6. Get a drink

    When I was a wee lad, my family and I were on vacation and stayed at the beach until sunset and even after dark, hoping to see some bioluminescent jelly fish. Instead what we found were dozens of baby sea turtles hatching before our eyes in a several shallow depressions.
    Of course around half of them were mesmerized by the lights of the nearby highway and started ponderously approaching in that direction which was inevitable death for such small, cute, harmless little things.
    So we spent about a good hour re-orienting the waywards back to the sandy surf and into the big blue ocean. I'd like to think those sea turtles we saved are still out there, thriving to this very day.

    Since this is sponsored by DJI, I have to add something as a Mavic Mini owner myself: Great drone for the price and size. However: It is VERY sensitive to signal interference. I recommend having direct line of sight at all times. I had many "automatic return to home" situations because the drone lost contact to the controller.
    I previously had a Mavic Pro (first generation) and it was way more robust in that regard.
    And: beautiful video, really enjoyed watching it!

    • @Odima16
      @Odima16 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      She's very positive, but she seems to be ignoring the fact that people are out there harming innocent turtles and fish constantly. Fishing is cruel.

    • @Billy-rz1jg
      @Billy-rz1jg 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah this was great. Many people that haven't fished or hunted don't understand it and have such a negative view of it but the truth is hunters/fishers are often the first ones to realize when something is wrong in an ecosystem. They spend all their time in it and they are connected to the environment. There are definitely exceptions but 99% of the fishers I've come across are genuinely kind, knowledgeable and really care about the animals they catch. Looking from the outside in I can understand why people have a negative view but after spending time around these people you learn how much they know about the outdoors and how much they want to conserve it.

    My first thought at around 7:00 when the biologist was explaining how she was removing the last few remaining turtles from the nest was something along the lines of; "Wouldn't that be weakening the collective gene pool by allowing the babies that would have died naturally to survive?" I was very relieved to see that there was a crude (but at least existent) litmus test of sorts to determine the viability of these animals. You have this knack for making people ask questions about the subject matter you are trying to teach and leading them to the answers they're seeking, this is the mark of an excellent teacher.
    Your videos are incredibly well structured and you did in fact make me feel all the things.

    I have four amateur theories in regards to Kale's preference for that seemingly uncomfortable position in its transportation bucket.
    1. The position allowed Kale to see more than just the grey walls of the bucket, which might feel less threatening. A year rehabilitating in a tank may have taught Kale that the only way out is up, when, in the open water, the way out is in any direction it chooses.
    2. Frequent treatments of the fistula may have desensitized Kale to that position, or maybe created a survival instinct within Kale that associated that position with positive outcomes.
    3. Lying flat to the bottom with no water buoyancy could be an irritant to the fistula or internal scar tissue and that position could take pressure off the injury.
    4. The forces from acceleration and deceleration of the vehicle might be reminiscent of waves and it might prefer aligning its anteroposterior(?) axis accordingly. A 90° turn of the bucket could test this theory.
    Destin, thank you. This was an extraordinarily insightful video and I must admit you've piqued my interest more than I thought a video on turtles could. Of course, the same could be said for trimming line... and pulleys... and backwards bicycles...

    You can feel and see the honest love and respect you hold for these animals and people who help them. I hope you are proud of the good work you do.

    This is amazing. They're everywhere so you can all help out. I know in Sri Lanka there are turtle sanctuaries for injured turtles and the incubation of eggs much like the ones mentioned in Costa Rica. They are located on the South Coast and are definitely worth a visit. Many of these organisations are NFP and even just visiting helps a lot. I live in Australia and have seen the Great Barrier Reef which has unfortunately crumbled under our practices, hence I could only see them in aquariums. Im so glad to see this on your channel and I hope people continue to educate themselves about these angels : )

    Amazing video . You did a very good thing that you didn't only explain things about turtles, but you also advertised the learning camp at Costa Rica and the Dr website to help people do all that stuff . You are not closing it on yourself , no you are promoting others to do the same ... Great job

    Great video, on a visit to a turtle nursery they told us to never touch baby turtles with your bare hands or wash the sand off them, as oils from your hands and removing the sand upsets an important part of their internal GPS system.
