I ride National Hunt horses for a living, they're the most amazing bravest horses I've ever had the pleasure of riding. My love of them came from my retired ex racer, who's 21 this year, and still not a lame step in his life. And honestly I've seen far far less deaths than in Livery/Lesson yards, I saw ponies locked up every day die constantly from colic and chronic lameness at my old livery. Lesson horses getting kicked and whipped with crops, WAY nastier than race whips, and the instructors didn't do anything about it and encouraged being aggressive to get the horse to do what you wanted, and dead to aids horses getting their ribs absolutely kicked in. The vices were unreal. :c
The difference riding an active Racehorse was amazing, especially when they knew they were about to go do some canter work, they were always so ready and happy, ears pricked you had to hold them back, and learn to be quiet on them, while the lesson ponies they taught you nothing but how to be a harsh rider, you forced the horse to comply, while riding out a Racehorse? You have to talk to them and converse with them and ASK them to slow down, because if they want to, they put their head down, grab the bit and WILL run off with you if you don't meet them halfway.
But for real though, they WAY prefer the banks, the hedges and the hurdles over showjumps anyday, it's nice over Showjumping too because you rarely adjust their stride, you let the horse do what he knows best and they will very rarely fail you. And the way they always want to go fast fast fast but you have to hold them back to a controlled canter and be like "NOPE" and they have a tantrum because they want to go. LOL 4 days a a week they go into the forest to pop a few XC jumps and fallen logs and hacked out, 3 days a week they're cantered/schooled.
Our oldest racer in the yard is nearly 14 and STILL won a race this year, he's amazing.

Some horses do like racing, but does that make it safe for them? No. Also, some horses get drugged and beat to go faster, which you can see in this video and other videos. The horses barely know the horses they’re racing with and therefore won’t know what tics the other off. Racing is a HUGE safety hazard. I’ve seen videos where the horse took one misplaced step and their leg was just hanging there and flopping around. So very sad.

So guys I DONT train race horses BUT I do train ex-race horses but one day this horse came in and I said “can I see what he does” that was a mistake because we have giant arena and he ran it in less the minute and a half. And well now he’s my best barrel racing horse and he’s almost 19 years (we got him when he was fourteen) you can ask questions if you want!
