- "Celtic 2" (unofficial title), written and performed by Afro Celt Sound System for the 1998 video game Magic & Mayhem.
The CD inlay includes the following message from Simon Emmerson:
"A note from Simon Emerson [sic] of the Afro Celt Sound System
We were approached by Virgin Interactive to do the music for Magic & Mayhem back in 1997 in the middle of a 41 date world tour. As you all know, computer games are the new rock and roll so being a devoted gamester, the thought of getting paid money to spend hours in front of a computer screen composing music and playing a state of the art game was too big an incentive to turn down.
The Mythos team were drawn to The Afro Celt Sound System because of our last record (Vol. 1: Sound Magic, Real World Records CDRW61) had the slow builds and epic soundscapes they felt would work wonders in a multi-media context. Our task was to create a soundtrack subliminal enough to provide good background atmospheres as well as performance pieces and themes for the respective realms.
The Greek and Medieval realms feature our French Breton Harp player Myrdhin/Merlin (it is his real name, and yes, we know it's a coincidence!). Apparently, for the Greek realm he used the authentic Greek six note Byzantian scale. I'm more interested in hard core techno beats myself.
The opening Celtic air features the ancient roots sounding Uilleann pipes of Ronan Browne. The weird buzzing instrument that provides the trancy-dancy tune for the Celtic Realm is a hurdy gurdy played by Nigel Eaton who had just come off the road touring with Page and Plant from Led Zeppelin.
James McNally, our multi-instrumentalist, provides the rhythmic textures with bodhran (the irish drum) and accordion, as well as some top line whistle melodies.
Thanks to Martin Russell, my trusty co-producer/engineer, Paul Whipp at Virgin Interactive for getting us the gig, Tetley at Mythos Games for providing all the amazing sound effects.

I watched the game at the age of 5, and I still can remember it. You can't compare it with another game thats impossible! It's a very beautiful game and the music, I think I will remember it, my whole life. Thank you so much for uploading this masterpiece!

this is awsome, it is by a band called Afro Celtic Sound System. And this is a reworking of one of their other tracks. If you like this music, they have five albums all worth hearing.
Got this game about 21 years ago as a present from a computer repair shop. They installed a graphic card that malfunctioned a few weeks after it was mounted. They felt bad and pointed at a pile of discounted video games and told me to pick one of them, so I picked this one. I will be making a review video about this game to spread the word!
in my opinion, despite the mournful graphics and massively aged feel of the game, it will always be one of the best! The story and characters and atmosphere more than make up for the lackings in its technology (and imo, even modern games like the Diablo series could learn a lot for M&M's vastly superior UI).
Take a Spartan; their days are long over, but they are still respected for how great they WERE. This game should be viewed with that same sentiment :)

Listening to this gives me a warm fuzzy feeling as I remember playing Magic & Mayhem as a 8 year old :D
I used to have this on my walkman and listen to it while walking from the bus stop home. The rhythm matches my walking pace perfectly and the length is exactly so that I would reach my door when it ended. Every walk home felt epic. :D

This game was incredible. It's a fucking shame it's not available on GoG...
I was at the pre-launch of this game at Playing Fields (now defunct) and managed to blag a free copy. Also (very briefly) met the Gollops and the other devs. Lost my copy a long while ago though :(
Always thought the music was outstanding. It was still pretty unusual to get game music of this quality at the time.

i would say it was more common then than now though, you did get more developers actually commissioning sound tracks for their games, i see a lot of games with generic soundtracks and pop music these days.
One other thing I loved about this game was the claymation intro.

Even without these things though, Gollops chaos gameplay always ensure great fun and I am really looking forward to his "Chaos Reborn", any fan of Chaos, Lords of Chaos or Magic and Mayhem should keep an eye out for that
Totally agree. The fact that the graphics were made out of clay motion simply annoys me. They look pretty awesome, even nowadays.

I think you have confused me for a person who doesn't know the difference between the words "mournful" and "basic".
Thank you for pointing out that they are different words though, I may not have noticed otherwise!
In any case, I chose the word "mournful" because it is the word I meant (oddly enough). Either way, I'm not slighting the game. Its fucking fantastic - and for its time, its graphic engines were not at all bad.
I think this is missing the point though...

My point was simply that the graphics are not mournful (a game that has graphics that have aged particularly badly or a game that has always had bad graphics could be described as mournful) or at least that mournful is far too strong a word as there are so many games more deserving of that label.
At least, I don't feel and kind of sense of mournfulness when I play it even now.

I just reinstalled the game to play through it again , but the music doesnt work. anyone know a fix?
I am having this weird main menu issue where the text is all wrong. Everything says "Load Game" or "Quick Battle". Even the preferences. When starting a new game, the difficulty options all say "Experience points" instead of "Apprentice" "Wizard" etc. If I start the game anyway, I am unable to save. It just crashes to desktop when I try. I have the same probem on multiple machines, both Windows 8 and Windows 10. I've tried installing it multiple times from my original 21 year old CD and the download from this myabandonware. I can't find any info on this. I remember having this problem about 3 years ago but I somehow fixed it by accident and don't know how I did. Does anybody have any idea what's causing this let alone how to fix it?

I think you have confused mournful with basic.
Very different words, very different meanings, however as the style of graphics in this game (although basic) are still pleasant to look at.
Love this music but outside this OST their music is way too "hippie" for me. Glad they didn't let it influence their great production of this soundtrack.
If you listen to a lot of their albums, some of the have SOME great tracks, some like stuff from this album, some totally different but still good- but overall i'd agree- I love the main songs in this game, but dont really like most of their stuff that much.

Yeah you probably will think the game's shit now. The graphics are very off putting if the game even works on your system. But I'm afraid our nostalgia will be greater than your pessimism will ever be.
