I remember this game back when it was in almost every arcade in NYC. So much fun, and you could tell the designers of the stages had a lot of fun with it, too. I wish this was remade or re-released like Rolling Thunder.
@prulcan I play on mame and I use a PS2 controller with a usb adapter. As for not being able to config, I guess it depends on what type of controller you are using.
I remember playing this this in the Arcades. Then I got the N64 port thinking it would be the same. Turns out the N64 port wasn't even half as good as the Arcade. Damn Shame :(
You'll need to download MAME UI FX 32 as the first step. Install MAME UI FX 32 on to your computer. Download the roms (zipped) & chd files into your roms directory. Then you run MAME UI FX 32, audit the game you want. And if it says passed, then you can play it. I hope this helps. You'll need a good Windows computer with a Dual Core Processor at least 2.2 ghz with 1-2 gb ram (virtual memory) to run the game at a somewhat decent speed. My laptop runs the game 48-69% average during the races and start menus before the race, the rest runs around 79-100% average. If you want the game to run almost 100% all the time, then you'll need a computer with a i7 processor at 2.5 ghz which can be overclocked to 3.2 ghz with 8 gb ram and a Nvidia Geforce video card. Hope this helps.
King B Awesome If any other hints and tips, I would save up for one of the latest Dell Alienware laptops since they seem to get the job done no problem at all.
@prulcan In all cases for me with driving games I had to fine tune the "analog control" (sensitivity) settings for each game until the cars handle like I wanted them to. Make sure you have analog enabled on the controller before you enter the game (I assume you know this already). Nothing beats an actual wheel though. Turbo will not help in a racing game, turn it off. For light gun games I just use a mouse. You could simply just buy a new ps2 controller but thats up to you.
Everything graphically. I'm definitely talking about native 4K resolution with 60 fps. Thus, polygons would be much greater. However, you'll be given the choice, play the remastered version or the classic version.
There's been a lot of potential games that could had been remastered. Take Hydro Thunder for example: Whether than remastering the original, Vector Unit developed a crappy sequel 'Hurricane.'
This is true. Nothing beats the actual wheel. And yes turbo is useless with racing games but is very useful with shooters like Out Zone my favorite game. I have PS2 so controller is not a problem. I must figured how to separate throttle and sterring because i have both function on one analog stick and i don't like that. Mouse is working now for light gun games. I did not know that you must turn on in INI file light gun 0 to 1 for mouse to work. BTW great gameplay.
Indeed, the arcade version is super rigged, even if you drive a race that's perfect or almost perfect (like in this video). It puts the ARTIFICIAL in "artificial intelligence". The handling also feels artificial. And then, the framerate chugs at points. But the N64 version is excellent because it feels entirely different and actually good. My uncle rented it back in 1999, and I was completely hooked.
hi man! great video :) i see you are emulating this. I tried some emulator but i can't figure how to make this work without audio problems.... which version of mame you use???
Are you using emulators to play Arcade games and are you using gamepad for those driving games? I ask because i can't configure gamepad for Outrun. Thanks.
This game was absurd. The problem is you know you lost if you start to pass the first car too early from the start. Then you know you have no shot at winning. It's like the game punishes you for pressing the gas pedal before the green light like in Mario Kart. I have won every race except for Highway 1.
I do use MAME but the CHD images are needed. I think they are like 500MB but after they are done and in the same folder as the rom, it doesn't run. Do you know if there is a file where the whole folder is fixed for us?
John Smith yeah that's what I've seen before but I think I had problems with it. But yeah I think I need to extract the zip file and put the CHD folder in it and then compress it again into a zipped folder. Am I right?
***** No, the CHD should NOT be zipped. If you still have problems you may have an old CHD, I think they changed the CHD format not too long ago. You may have to get a newer version of the CHD file.
that's one thing i always hated about this game was that you couldn't get to 1st place always. they should've programmed it better. most of the time i never did, but i would get close.
Im using Speedlink PS2 to PC converter. Is plug and play and works great for all games except driving games. Those driving games is very hard to set up. I do not know what to do. For light gun games i figured how to setup. This is the reason why i do not have driving games on emulator. Also i have Speedlink controller Strike2 with turbo function and give me same problems with driving games. I use MAME 32 version 0.103.0.0. Thanks for help.

I really like the music in Santa Cruz.
Cool games ! 🖥️🎮😀👍👍🏻👍
I miss this arcade game, it's the best midway racing games ever!

Arcade version will always be better that the N64 version.
***** I agree! :) I play this on a arcade emulator though.

I am looking up that processor right now :)
so... Arcade= Kick ass
N64 home port= Medicore
if i had to choose what was better I would say the arcade version anyday

It would be cool if they would do a HD remake of this game.
Why not? Imagine playing this game in 4k resolution. Same game, just much better graphics.

Yeah, I don't think anyone is going to take the time in doing that.

it's just like Crus'n Exocita because of the woman with the flag
IIRC there was a shortcut where you fly into the midway offices
@jr2nd It was ported to the N64.
Long story short, quality was traded for content.
California Speed, the fastest driving game ever!
LOL probably not true!
But what about F-ZERO GX?
it was in tha 90's lol

I always went for the golf cart lol
the game was made so that you rarely came out first!

7:11 What the fuck?!
Apparently you can hit innocent spectators and send them flying 100 yards forward. Fun.
So apparently going to 9th from 10th is a great job

I put my CHDs in their own folder, for example:
this game is in my Roms folder "roms/calspeed.zip"
The CHD is in Roms/calspeed/calspeed.chd
John Smith yeah that's what I've seen before but I think I had problems with it. But yeah I think I need to extract the zip file and put the CHD folder in it and then compress it again into a zipped folder. Am I right?

John Smith ok thanks. When I get around to try it again, I'll let you know if I have any questions. Thx very much :)
