OMG! I bought the FA 08 about 5 years ago and was frustrated. Now using Ed's videos I am making progress. I nearly threw the keyboard outside and was going to toss. it. I am amazed at your excellent skills. Take care and Thank you
Ok this is the best video out there about this Roland product. This guy explains in perfect fashion how to use each part of the FA-06 without overcomplications!
Best keyboard ive ever bought. Tops the fandom 6( 2005) in workflow and the fact that you have 16 tracks to assign any sound with individual Effects to what ever keys you want. I opens up a whole word of studio sets!
Great presentation - informative and gets the info across in a way that is easy to understand, with a voice that is pleasant to listen to, and without being too showy. Thank you! Seems like great keyboard too.
Ed great video just as the other ones I watched. Was actually looking at the Korg Krome 61 but the FA offers a bit more for less money. It will be a FA06.
My question : On Roland Workstation, during measure by measure squencing, recorded sustain pedal on and off data is changed alternately,on become off, and off become on, but sequencing on Krog workstation, all the sustain come up exectly the same as while recording, please answer what about on this FA 06,( I have owned 3 Roland workstation and 1 Korg,My faviourate function of Roland is WAIT NOTE ( Key On ), which korg has never have.THANKs
Big Ed... I was searching for a sound module to complement the Roland Ax Synth keytar. I came across your demo on the FA-06 and thought that I could use the FA-06 as the sound module with all the workstation features for free (and amazing sounds from Roland Integra 7). I can connect the Ax Synth to the FA-06 workstation and play up front with the guitar players and not be hidden at the back. The weight of 12+ lbs and 40 inches wide are manageable (to carry on gig nights) for a senior citizen. Thanks Small Ed
easyvivo The FA would be a great tone generator with over 2000 sounds to choice from. I'm in complete agreement on the portability thing. Great Choice! - Tony
easyvivo Hi Ed. Contact me at sales@nstuffmusic.com and I'll get you a price quote on a FA06. Our prices are too low to show here. Talk to you later. -Tony
N Stuff Music Tony... I went to your website, sent my messages and no reply to send me your quotation. I am gonna try one more time and wait for your reply. thanks Ed
When exporting to wave files for multi tracking, what about the separation of the drums? if I use track 1 for my kick will it all me to export each drum sound separately?
Ia the only way to get sounds into the DAW using the SD card, or can you record directly to the DAW via USB? I noticed the manual says their USB driver is for both MIDI and audio, but the only demos I've seen show the player always dumping tracks to the card, then putting the card into the computer to load the DAW. Why does the driver say "MIDI and audio" if the SD card is the only way to export sounds? Thanks!
Wow ... that is what i search for!!! And this Tutorial is a explanation...when i saw other Guys, sorry Guys but you Play and play Piano and really really do less explanation. This is a Tutorial how i want it!!! Great Musican this Man here, thank you!!! Edit...oh is this Roland really 5 years old, im a Guitar player i search such a Workstation for Arrangement!!! I believe this is good for what i want it.
There is a bug in FA series and not resolved. In STUDIO SET mode, I have 16 track (Part). An Expression pedal is used to adjust the volume of the selected part and working good. When I was playing in Part 1, I dim the volume with the EXP. Pedal and without releasing the key notes, I change the Part from Part 1 to Part 2, and suddenly the volume of Part 1 turned to its original value. This is a big problem in live and no solution found in any forum. All user having problem is looking for a firmware update. Thanks Roland
So the pads on the right of the keyboard, can i trigger sounds with them like using a synth pad? Can it be used in a live performance for example to trigger my own sound effects or sounds? Thanks :)
Master Díaz. Un gusto saludarte bro. Disculpa. Tienes algún correo dónde pueda contactarte? Tengo un Roland Fantom x8. Cómo puedo sacar el click por una señal independiente? En serio agradeceré mucho tu ayuda. Saludos desde Chiapas México.
so I have just got the FA 06 but I want to know how to get Way files voices. I'm now learning how to play do you download them help me out Roland Fantom world
can you set the sequencer for a verse, a chorus and a bridge and the bring them up in real time. At the moment, I'm using my fa08 with a boss rc300 loop station to do this.
Hello there! Can you help me and tell me how to find a Theremin sound in the library of this workstation? I have a-Roland Fa-08, and in it I looked at all-2000 sounds, but I could not find the pure sound of the Theremin!( Only just-similar to him!
No direct control for draw-bars is a deal breaker for me. Not intuitive to go menu diving and fiddle with rotary knob to adjust the organ. That where people will miss the sliders. Why not pre-map the sliders to the knobs on the right in organ mode?
Would have been nice if they would have put a better sampler in it so you could create samples and play them across the keybroad keys like on the Kronos or the Fantom
You will need a SD card reader/writer adapter to USB. These are fairly inexpensive, can be found almost everywhere (Walmart even), and come in handy for a lot of situations. Good Luck.
Philo Beddoe Presumptions aside how much do you want to bet my computer is more expensive than yours and runs faster? I'm a PC gamer. I don't waste my money on ancient crap like SD cards and DVD drives. And I build my machines by myself. Bitch.
Philo Beddoe Ok your comment was too long. I'm gonna go back to what I said about the SD card - It's annoying to use but it's not why I avoided the fa-06. I avoided the fa-06 because it's sounds are garbage and there are not enough arps.
Yash Chauhan Yeah right...workstations with near zero boot up times and 2,000 presets from a flagship sound module is so annoying to listen to and work with.
good morning, im just in a little bit careful, in updating the fa 06, can i uodate drectly to 1.03 version? or it shud be step by step like 1.01 1.02 1.03, tnx for the reply..have a nice day god bless
+Van Breemen Nalam Hi this is Tony from NStuffMusic.com. I'm not sure if it's necessary to step sequentially thru the updates or not. I would err on the side of caution and do them sequentially. If that seems too much to deal with, maybe try to contact Roland Product Specialists for a definitive answer on the procedure. Good Luck!
Why does his piano sound so rich compared to the one on my FA06? Mine sounds like a piano and a banjo mixed...and yes, I have reset the factory programs..
***** The sound you are hearing on this video is a DI straight out of the FA-06 and directly into my Pro Tools rig. There is no mic used on this video..
N Stuff Music I don't have to play the Fa to know that the synth sounds are awesome, but how are the piano sounds? I know this don't matter to a lot of studio recorders, but I'm trying to find a keyboard with great piano and synth sounds:-)....Motif is great as well as some others, and they are way over priced.....Fa is the lntegra 7 built into a keyboard?
J.J.A Florida Yes the FA is built on the Integra7 Tone engine, that's over 2000 sounds to checkout. If you like the Motif, checkout the Yamaha MOXF and/or the Korg Krome. All three are very much in competition with each other and are in a more affordable range . Personally, I believe the piano issue you're experiencing is a matter of preference. It's what not only sounds good, but feels good, is comfortable, and even portability is a concern for some. Good Luck!
Ok if I make a recording on the fa what happens when I turn off the fa , can I go back to what I recorded and add to it some more or do I lose it? Anyone know? Thanks😐
Does the sequencer do linear recording like whole songs Like I do on my jv-1000 or only short loops I have to import and arrange in a DAW? this is a must-have for me and if so, i plan to purchase this amazing board
Mine sounded like shit. Started to make a few adjustments, tweaking certain parameters and modifying them without adding effects. The sounds improved significantly, sustain pedal also contributed to such improvement. Good speakers are also key. Having said that, I found certain piano sounds much more warmful and better in the free EXP packs available in the website.
Fantom G is discontinued and not available new. Maybe used? The FA has all the sounds and then some, a revamped sequencer section, a nice keyboard action (with no aftertouch) and comes in at almost half the price of the Fantom. I doubt you would be disappointed.
Sir does fantom fa06 have aftertouch? Sir i am the owner of fantom x6 so does it make sense if I buy fantom fa 06 and sell my fantom x6 i mean which keyboard is gud Fantom x6 or Fantom fa 06? Thanks!!
There has never been AT in an affordable workstation. It would drive up costs just a bit higher, which would drop down sales, resulting in a ‘not-so-affordable’ synth, that only few can afford to buy. Typically, AT is reserved for the flagship synths and workstations such as your Fantom X6. Hope this helps!
Mauwin Fernandes While there is something to be said to having the latest and greatest, there's nothing wrong or bad about hanging on to a tried and true workhorse of a workstation. I'm sure you can come up with a list of Pros and Cons for each, but there is no right or wrong answer. If your heart and mind can't decide, flip a coin! Thanks, Tony.
Some say you are so easy to follow but I find that this is more of a review for experienced players. Hard to follow since the camera is not close to the keyboard to see or follow the change which you perform quickly.
Fantastic demo. Answered my key questions. Now I'm going to sell my soul to the Devil for the money! (He's in for a shock, because the tax man sucked out all the good stuff)
Hi there, Could anyone help me please..? I just wanna know only one thing in the studio set about FA-06. It would be very helpful and appreciable. You may also send the comment to sony@jerrykjose.com. The question is in the studio set mode, Can I set different zones(split points; both start and end) for each timbre/voice(16 tracks) like i do in my Korg Krome and Kronos..? Please reply asap. Thank you
Is it just me or did Roland peak back with the Fantom series?? These new keyboards look all flimsy and plastic looking. Those Fantoms were the most futuristic looking keyboards Ive ever seen. Nicer than the korg Tritons and yamaha motifs. And Im a Korg User. To bad they discontinued them. If they would've kept making fantoms I wouldve definately have one already. What happened Roland??
Yeah they looked nice but poor marketing from them at that time.Roland has nice sounds but there is no creativity at all after the Jupiter 80 and 50 after 2012 all their synths look the exact same I'm tire of that shit lol
No aftertouch!!! What were they thinking. Otherwise, great combination of features, portability, price, etc. It's lightweight, so ideal for a live performer, so why take away one of the most important tools for live use. Stooopid. Not your fault, Ed. And great work as usual from you - your reviews/tutorials are always excellent. But ...
True, but I already have 5 pedals to deal with! The main point though is that this is primarily a performance keyboard, but they have removed a primary performance tool.
From the FA-08 to the Fantom G8 in certain aspecs of sounds yes. But i have tested the kronos and find the kronos to have way better acoustic Guitar sounds and organ sounds vs the FA-08 and my old Fantom G8. I actually own both and wanted to get a Kronos but i just couldn't afford the $4,000+ for it.
ya.. its expansive .. I do like the fanthom fa 08 keyboard feeling.. plus on version 1.02 of fantom.. the synth get stuck when editing.. so i had to update the version to 1.03.. just saying.. im very upset that u cannot load ur own samples to play on the fantom.. but generally i like it
they should hire people who know about technology and play some avant garde tunes. what is the purpose of playing cheezy stuff on a masterpiece of tech. hell no go ahead and evolve a little bit.
Markus Arike Yeah, but the aesthetics of the FA-06 are very poor with squeaky plastic and all. I find the D-20 quite beautiful. Integra-7 is not bad either, and I think it has the same sound as FA-06. FA-06 I just find utterly ugly. Sometimes I am worried, that Roland might go down Korg's route after Ikutaro Kakehashi departure. The AIRA and Boutique series are utterly cheesy, along the lines of most Korg products. That's sad. I think the most desirable instrument that Roland currently makes are FR-1x, FR-3x,and recently discontinued FR-7x V-Accordions. Synthesizers are not Roland's most desirable products right now.
Andrew Piatek To each his own, I don't find the FA-06 ugly at all. In fact, it's one of the better looking workstations. It's a joy to play, the keys feel great on both models, an extremely addictive board with high quality sounds and FX. This is probably why it's such a big hit for Roland. The Boutiques and the System 1/TR8 are absolutely fantastic, I have the System 1 and JX-03. The Boutiques are tiny, metal modules with excellent sounds and intuitive interfaces. Both have superb sounds that even analog only weirdos will like, knob per function interfaces, and are similarly addictive pieces of gear. Anyone interested in getting the creative juices flowing should ignore forum haters and give them a try. Cheers.
Markus Arike Correction: For each his or her own. And yes, for me make it the D-50 and DX7II 100% true to the honest reissues, and yes, I'll spend my dollars. Pay money for DJ equipment? No.
+Markus Arike System-1 are you kidding me? System-1m, maybe, if it didn't have those cheesy lights. But System-1 with the keyboard? That's the most hideous keyboard thing I've ever seen. DJ-70 is far better than this.
The Ed's vids are always the first I check when I'm searching for a new product. Clear, complete. Thanx Ed!

Ed,
I have a sequence on a SD card from my Juno G, how can I use or transfer this onto an SD in my FA06?
Thank you!
im about to buy a keyboard. Used fantom g8 for $1000 or a used fa-08 for $1300?
I don't know why people criticise the piano sounds on this keyboard. sounds great to me.
When exporting to wave files for multi tracking, what about the separation of the drums? if I use track 1 for my kick will it all me to export each drum sound separately?
Does rythm pattern have accompanist option? So that different instruments play behind and the sound changes when different chords are played. Thanks!!

Can u change chords while sample track is played
Hi Eddy, I’m not able to pair Logic Pro x with fa06 . Followed all the steps but no!! Can you help?
sir ed just want to ask if the action is semi weighted keys
Hello, the action is a synth action.
It is handy for gig and events
Can you use an external midi controller to access sounds or a guitar midi controller?
can you only record in loops or can you record entire passages, like a drum track?
Does it have a song player? mp3
So the pads on the right of the keyboard, can i trigger sounds with them like using a synth pad? Can it be used in a live performance for example to trigger my own sound effects or sounds? Thanks :)

What is the max capacity for the SD card ? More than 4GB ?
anyone know of a place or website where you can download tracks into the Fa-06 - backing tracks into the sampler for quick live band use ?
hittraxmidi.co.uk may be what you are after :-)
Great review!
My computer doesn't have a slot for an SD card. Would I be able to export my .wav files to a USB?

You guys take trade in?
Anyone know what the future is for the FA 06/08 in 2017?
Yes, still good in 2019 but now with a big brother called the fantom
I'm the Classic Sounds is Symphonique (XP Series) included? Does anyone know? Please reply
'Symphonique' is sound # 300 and is categorized as Orchestral. The complete sound list is available at Roland's website as a downloadable PDF file.

Tweak the release knob and you'll get more sustain. Sustain pedal also works fine.

You can use a foot pedal for aftertouch. Some people prefer that. Some don't.
True, but I already have 5 pedals to deal with!
The main point though is that this is primarily a performance keyboard, but they have removed a primary performance tool.
I wish they simply did a software update of the Fantom G instead, this looks like a backward step
Why cheap plastic? When i'm going to see a Fantom G like workstation?
Unfortunately, there's no crystal ball here.
My saw tooth has a toothache 😢
To bad no drawbars for real time fast adjustment.Touchscreen would have been nice.
Even phisical ones would have been good.
What name that grand piano how’s on start this video??? It’s from integra?
i think korg kronos beats that synth
it seems like it does but i believe its also more expensive. the FA 06 and 08 is a nice keyboard but definitely doesn't perform like my old Fantom G8.

im very upset that u cannot load ur own samples to play on the fantom..
but generally i like it
+Da Ga agreed :)
they should hire people who know about technology and play some avant garde tunes. what is the purpose of playing cheezy stuff on a masterpiece of tech. hell no go ahead and evolve a little bit.
I'd prefer a Roland D-20. If I could only find one not beaten up.
Overall the sounds on the FA-06 are better, especially the acoustic sounds. Any pianist is going to much prefer the FA-06/08.

Yeah, but the aesthetics of the FA-06 are very poor with squeaky plastic and all.
Cheers.

Correction: For each his or her own.
