*soft piano* Never gonna give you up Never gonna let you down Never gonna turn around and Desert you Never gonna make you cry Never gonna say goodbye Never gonna tell a lie and Hurt you *Petrucci solo* DT should do a world tour with Rick Astley
The reason this is gold and the other version (Astley music with DT vocals) isnt, is because, in a weird way, Dream Theater and Rick Astley are polar yet complementary opposites: Dream Theater is a band with solid instrumentals yet generally plain and uninteresting vocals, whereas Rick Astley is plain, standard pop music with unusually solid and sonorous singing. So put together, it's solid and professional instrumentals with unusually solid and sonorous singing. Not much of a surprise it works.
Gabriel Rodríguez Gutiérrez Compared to singers like Sir Russell Allen or David DeFeis, LaBrie comes off as plain and weak imo. I like my male singers sounding like men, not boys.
@@alextaunton3099 You must really hate Geddy Lee vocals then? Not everyone is born with the same octave range in their voice. Just because James' voice is more high pitched does not mean he is not a good singer. Russel Allen is great, I would say someone like Jorn Lande has a deeper and more powerful voice though. Everyone has an opinion though...
I had my doubts when I clicked on the video but this is freakin' epic!!! Totally shocked, in a good way. Never thought DT and RickRolling would mesh but it works. Nice job!
I used the multitrack stems from the Producer Edition DVD that came with the big uber-deluxe boxed set version of the album - isolated drums, bass, guitar, keys, solos and vocals of all the songs on the album.
Someone might have said this already, but with the instrumental, you could also isolate the vocals by matching up the instrumental with the original and inverting one of the tracks. Most of the instruments would then cancel out and you would be left with a nice vocal only track :)
I know what "Best of Times" is about. Those lyrics hit me even harder. I have met Mike on a few occasions in the past. We have very similar personalities and other life experiences. We are both OCD freaks about our bands too. My personal relation to "Wither" might have been because I was thinking about my mother's condition and knowing that I didn't have much time left with her, the first time I heard it. As a musician, I don't believe that writer's block is "nothing". It sucks.
Just listened to the alternate version on the blog. Now, maybe it's because the first love is always the most passionate, but the version here reigns supreme.
....This is actually good. No, this is actually great! Every time I listen to this, I like it more and more. Weird how these songs combine this greatly.... :o
My mom said I should try to get them to do this, so who else agrees with me: Astley and DT should get together and record a studio version of this song.
Very very clever mix. After 2:52 would have been pretty hard to sync up by the sounds of it because of some of the irregular time signatures by Dream Theater
@aarhallenbeck You do realize that songs like The Spirit Carries On, The Root of All Evil, I Walk Beside You, Another Day (from their first (technically second) album!), the entirety of Home (except that last sitar jam thing), Lifting Shadows off a Dream, and others are all in common, unchanging time signatures--namely 4/4 or 6/8--don't you? The time signature isn't the only thing that defines the complexity, and even less so the beauty, of a piece.
Happy 7th birthday to this mashup. Time flies.
Very chilling.
And already so perfect !
daym, it gonna be 15 this summer
Happy 15 years!
*soft piano*
Never gonna give you up
Never gonna let you down
Never gonna turn around and
Desert you
Never gonna make you cry
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and
Hurt you
*Petrucci solo*
DT should do a world tour with Rick Astley
Thanks JasonParadise's chat for presenting this to me.
Same xD
Thanks r/DTCircleJerk for presenting this to me.
this is the kind of thing that, even after years of listening to it, i wish DT and ol ricky would get together and do this live.
Let's start a petition
This is easily the best mashup I have ever heard.
+TheOobo check out smells like teen spirit with never gonna give you up..
Can’t believe this is 10 years old already! Loved it then and love it now
Me right as I'm clicking on the video: "oh god, what am I getting myself into."
Me after: what a masterpiece, the world needs to hear this.
I've listened to this so much, great song ha
This is still great. Agree, I keep coming back to listen to this. Best Rick Astley mashup ever. Brilliant work.
Thank you! :-)
For the first time it has been a pleasure to be Rickroll'd. Just can't believe how well the chorus fits. Seriously good job.
Wow, I knew Portnoy leaving would bring changes to DT, but I didn't expect this! :p
I am awestruck, I completely love Wither, and now it has Rick in it! Wonderful!!
Damn, it's ridiciulous how good his singing fits to Wither. Awesome mashup!
HOLY SHIT
IT'S IN THE RIGHT KEY
THIS IS FUCKIN AWESOME
Easily the best DT mashup I've ever seen. Props!
"And I'll never see the end -- gotta make you understand." You even rhymed them! Perfect!
This is possibly the best thing I've ever heard.
this is to great, i can´t belive it sound so fluid
The chorus to this mashup is unironically one of the best things I’ve ever heard.
I'd pay a thousand bucks to see them perform this version live.
The part where he goes:
"Never gonna give! Never gonna give!"
was pure win.
still just perfect. i love this so so much. the video was fairly new when i first heard it, so there goes more than a decade coming back to it
Best mashup ever.
This improves BOTH songs immensely.
this is still one of the ALL TIME great mash-ups.
One of the best and precise mashups I've heard if a long time. Goog job.

Plain uninteresting vocals on Dream Theater? What group do you listen to?
Gabriel Rodríguez Gutiérrez Compared to singers like Sir Russell Allen or David DeFeis, LaBrie comes off as plain and weak imo. I like my male singers sounding like men, not boys.
Have you ever heard Awake album?
I've heard every Dream Theater album. Have you actually ventured outside of them to hear better singers?
@@alextaunton3099 You must really hate Geddy Lee vocals then? Not everyone is born with the same octave range in their voice. I think I laughed throughout the whole length of this song. This is so brilliantly done.
Didn't think that this would be so good.
Great work Neil!!!
I had my doubts when I clicked on the video but this is freakin' epic!!! Totally shocked, in a good way. Never thought DT and RickRolling would mesh but it works. Nice job!
These two were made for eachothers. Best song on the tubes.
I used the multitrack stems from the Producer Edition DVD that came with the big uber-deluxe boxed set version of the album - isolated drums, bass, guitar, keys, solos and vocals of all the songs on the album.
Wow, this actually makes the song sound emotional!
Well done!!
Now Playing: Rick Astley's Dream Theater.
Absolutely amazing mash-up. How did you even think of it? Genius!
right around the solo, just starting with the piano
pure win right there, flawless
This actually bops! Thanks YT recommendations.
Someone might have said this already, but with the instrumental, you could also isolate the vocals by matching up the instrumental with the original and inverting one of the tracks. Most of the instruments would then cancel out and you would be left with a nice vocal only track :)
woowwww it fits perfectly, these two songs are amazing, i really thought it was recorded by them in the real life
Comment to the algorithmic overlords. This deserves 10m+ views and I'm not even joking
I don't know whether to bust gut laughing or tearfully sing along.
Seriously. Rick Astley had some touch of genius with this song. It fits EVERYTHING. Just like Guile's theme.
Amazing! Totally amazing! The guy who compiled the song in this way rocks!
Man!! The guy that made this remix deserves an award!!!
Really nice!!!! Brilliant
I would love the MP3 of this. Great work man. I enjoyed it very much.

Man this is real cool. I used to turn off those RickRoll windows at once but this time I bang my head while listening to RickRoll. Bloody amazing
My God, this is f'ing brilliant. Thank you!
This needs so many more views than it has.. Its soo perfect
I about cried laughing
The pic is hilarious :D Great work!
Hahaha, man, the alternative mix to this (the other way around) on your blog is also awesome! I almost like it better.
Dream Theater got Rick Rolled.
Awesome :D
These two fit pretty well at my huge surprise :r
There's an instrumental version of the song floating around the interwebs. Fun fact: as a kid, I owned the 7" vinyl single of Never Gonna Give You Up.
"If you hadn't told me, I never would've known it was two songs." My older sister. :)
You sir have won the internet for today.
...I can't believe this seriously works...it's going to be stuck in my head forever.
This is excellent. I have a friend called Martin who loves this song so much!
....This is actually good. No, this is actually great! Every time I listen to this, I like it more and more. Weird how these songs combine this greatly.... :o
this is freaking gold
Chills. Literally chills.
That mesh actually worked. Impressive👏
3:28 windows sound effect?
***** Lol, no no, before the solo. in the "silence." Specifically, it's on beat 3, before the guitar which roars in on 4.
Yep.
I just heard the "Astley music with DT vocals" version on Neil's blog...weird but somehow nice! :D
If I ever get Rick Roll'd with this, I won't care. This is surprisingly awesome!
this is actuallly amazing. i hope dream theater see this!
I never thought I would be flippin ROCK ASTLEY THE ROCK HORNS. What is the beauty of the main language of music? THIS IS IT.
My mom said I should try to get them to do this, so who else agrees with me: Astley and DT should get together and record a studio version of this song.
man this is awesome, yo shouldnt have deactivated the feedback funktion man id like to give you 10 stars out of 5 :)
There are some creative people out there for sure! - Classic!
lulz, very well made mix , more astley mixes plz
Absolutely incredible!
DAMN IT, I'll never listen to this song the same way again.
WITHER ROLL'D!!!
Btw... Absolutely EPIC... No more to say about this... Nicely done!
Hate to admit but I fucking love this.
lol good point. and yeah, thats pretty true. except for BTBAM, where the vocalist is playing some sweet keyboard when hes not singing/screaming
Very very clever mix. After 2:52 would have been pretty hard to sync up by the sounds of it because of some of the irregular time signatures by Dream Theater
Simply awesome.
Thats so cool how Rick just blends over the guitar solo at 3:30.
@aarhallenbeck

This is surprisingly really good
I am so glad this exists
THIS IS INCREDIBLE!
This is the most amazing thing I've ever heard.
Ah the awesomeness of being in similar keys with similar tempos.
So good XP
my jaw actually dropped when I heard the first verse; this works insanely well
I'm so downloading this as an Mp3. This should be on iTunes, for those not worthy of using TH-cam Downloader.
Beautiful!
"Never gonna give, Never gonna give"... fuckin' epic. I loved it. I wish Rick Astley would be the next Dream Theater vocalist.
Don't worry, this is a common feeling often experienced upon listening to any Dream Theater song.
This is totally brilliant.
I just need a download link for this masterpiece
youtube to mp3
its a shame their vocal styles are so different because these songs blend perfectly this video is awesome!
now I want James and Rick to duet at live shows, that would be priceless
very well done... keep up the good work
Earned my subscription
brilliant, perfect, absolutely magnificent and clever
Beautiful.
Best rick-roll ever.
@MrTanookiMario yeah and another thing is that they use a lot of older tunes from past songs. i like it
