Abom, , my wife and I just did that exact trip. At the summit of pikes peak there is alot of construction on the new summit house. Very nice to see the trip through your videos
Abon !!! Thank you for the beautiful views of the Royal Gorge, Garden of the God's, and Pikes Peak! In 1965 and 1996 I was able to see the first 2 myself. I was not able to do Pikes Peak either time. The beauty of these places brings tears to my eyes. Your videos are super! Thanks.
My brother and I rode our motorcycles to the top in August 1989, it was snowing above 8,000 ft. and there were 4 inches of snow at the top. The temperature at the bottom was in the upper 90's. Most all of the high road was gravel/dirt. I'd rather ride back down in the snow on gravel than the pavement.
I loved Pike peak when we went 2 years ago. Awesome drive up. We had to park in the same lot because of limited parking up top. There's still construction going on. That's way they are doing the shuttle to the top. I did like you did on the way down. Lower gears and when we got to the spot where they check your brake temp, mine was at 76*. We were in a F250 with the 7.3 power stroke. I have enjoyed the trip videos. Keep them coming. Dave
A hundred years ago my grandfather took a train ride to the top. I have a picture of him standing on the back step of the rail car.with a sign in the frame giving the information about where the rail line stopped.
I made the trip from Fort Worth Texas to Pikes Peak in 1976 on my motorcycle. At that time the upper half of the road was gravel and went all the way to the top. The gravel made handling the motorcycle through those switchbacks more difficult. By the time I got to the top I felt a little tipsy from the altitude and exertion. Thanks for sharing your experience!
It rains in the afternoon at altitude. You need to get to the top before noon. I used to guide up longs peak, about 1pm the weather changed. By 3pm, it's sleeting rain with 40knot freezing wind wiping water off the ground making tiny, flying ice razor blades. You learn that lesson quickly. If you're still in Colorado, check out roxborough state park. It's free and amazing!!! It's a little south west of Denver.
Last time I was up the road to the top was not paved. Goosing it around those hair pin turns was a lot of fun. :-) I didn't have any overheat issues with my Cummins.
The first two times I went it was too cloudy to see anything, so I never made it up there. Third trip was a beautiful day, what a view! Plus we had a snowball fight in June up there. How many people can say that!
You can see the crews at the entry gate setting up for this year's annual Pikes Peak hill climb. Going on now as I make this post. 44 entries of which 12 are Porchas (sp). Hard to imagine racing up the mountain but they do it every year.
About 8 years ago I drove up Pikes Peak while traveling between Pueblo, CO and Goodland, KS. It was a beautiful drive, but I did not think things through. I was in Pueblo replacing batteries in a couple of 50 Kva UPS units, and I had 70 batteries about the same weight as car batteries in the bed of the truck, yeah, that is about 5,000 lbs of batteries.... We stopped on the way back down at the visitors center and the rotors on the brakes were glowing a nice cherry red, and I was in 1st gear 90% of the time. We hung out at the visitors center for a while letting those brakes cool down. But the road is a bit scary, there was one guy so terrified that he was practically scrapping the rocks on the inside edge away from the cliffs.
We visited Pikes Peak many yers ago. It was great. We took a tour bus (van) up the mountain. Great driver! I remember that he stopped a few times on the way up to let the brakes cool off. I live in Florida and one of the things that I miss are mountains. Florida is flat. Great video, I enjoyed seeing the mountains.
I’m sorry you didn’t make it to the top. Abbey would have loved the gift shop! My last trip up, the last 6 miles or so was unpaved. That was a real adventure!
I see they have paved the road alot more now. It was a dirt road for less then half the trip to the summit. I always thought it was dirt so there was no icy roads. It is beautiful. A little spooky with no guard rails in some spots. Thanks as always.
Adam, you made my day for your response. So glad you n Abby had a great time. I love Colorado. The furthest west we have bee is the Red Wood forest in California. Amazing the size of the trees. Thanks so much.

I don't think the Cog Train is in business any longer. I heard it shut down a few yeas ago because they didn't have the funds to rebuild it. Too bad because, for my money, it was the best way to get to the summit.

Just came across you two and your videos while looking at the Royal Gorge Bridge. Really liked that one and also this one of Pikes Peak. I went up Pikes Peak many years ago with my, now ex-husband. It was really beautiful. It still looks beautiful, but those curves looks scary now! I guess as you get older, the nerves change... LOL
Next time you go to Pikes Peak - you should consider the cog railway. I understand that this year it isn't really an option but back in the 1970's we stopped there on the way to Philmont.
@@AbomAdventures The Cog RR is expected to reopen in May of 2021 with new trains, new track, new station, and other things. The new summit house is to be completed about that time, too.
You two had a great Exercise Tolerance Test! I once saw a 9 year old pass out when he tried to run in the shop at the Pike's Peak (from hypoxia) summit. It does not seem much has changed since I was there in about 1979.

Depends on the driver. Most vehicles will get up there with the air on but it would seem fair to say, at some point in elevation, it's just going to be much colder and A/C won't be necessary. However, leaving the transmission in D or OD will get you to over heat, using a lower gear will put less load on the engine. Those turbo engines usually maintain well since the thin air is compensated for with the computer sensors and turbo.

Wish you could have seen the views without the smoke haze from the forest fires to the west. You should have stuck around for the hill climb, the most awesome motorsports race in the country.
Back about 1966, some friends and I went to the hill climb. Road was 100% loose gravel bottom to top. We happened to be on one of the switchbacks and every car that spun around that curve showered us with gravel. Winning car was an Oldsmobile Toronado...front wheel drive climbed like a cat up a tree and the rear wheel cars just spun their wheels. LOL
$15 per person seems expensive to take a drive up there. The USA is going crazy with fee's to visit locations that natural citizens pay for with their taxes. Sad.

I swear Abby has a different pair of sunglasses on every video!
She said “thank you for noticing” 😂
Wish you could have seen the views without the smoke haze from the forest fires to the west. You should have stuck around for the hill climb, the most awesome motorsports race in the country.
Back about 1966, some friends and I went to the hill climb. Road was 100% loose gravel bottom to top. We happened to be on one of the switchbacks and every car that spun around that curve showered us with gravel. Winning car was an Oldsmobile Toronado...front wheel drive climbed like a cat up a tree and the rear wheel cars just spun their wheels. LOL
Abby.. "I NEED a Pikes Peak T-Shirt".....lol Legend.. Just like My Wife... ahahahahahaha
Went in 2018 dint make it as far as you we went on cristmas it was frozen i cant wait to go bk

Nice!!
Big Foot Crossing? Hold on ABOM never got out of the car! ( Joke)
13,000 feet wow! I know most pilots have to use oxygen at 12,000 and above. I would have been short winded for sure at 13,000. You and Abby are brave
At 10K thirty minutes only with out oxygen, at 13K you need oxygen
You end up at 14,112, I live in the Springs and still get a head rush.
That’s Darrel
NO WAY! I HATE HEIGHTS!
$15 per person seems expensive to take a drive up there. The USA is going crazy with fee's to visit locations that natural citizens pay for with their taxes. Sad.
Some people will always be a slave to the dollar
Get an annual pass for national parks
@@mow4it The toll person always let us in with nat park pass without additional fee this last summer. Maybe it's up to the person in the toll booth ?
