For those of you who don't know, Richard Smith wrote one of the finest books ever on Fender's story: "Fender: The Sound Heard 'round the World". If you're a Fender fan and you haven't read it, you should consider finding a copy. A real treasure.

What Richard forgot to tell is that this body is 1,5 inch thick, whereas the Broad-/Telecaster and later single pick-up Esquire were standard 1,75 inch. This is the fourth more or less prototype I know of, the first two without serial no. and two having a number: 0009 and this 0095. Next, four other very early pre production 2 pick-up Esquire models serial # 0013/0129/0087 and 0043) are in my datebase + pictures. This 0095 is the second prototype found with a chambered body. This is pure early Fender history.

I really like to see the photos You have of 2 Esquires without serial numbers and 0005, Richard is a national treasure isn't he?

    • @gerritleemburg6777
      @gerritleemburg6777 6 ปีที่แล้ว

I guess your are John Peden, the famous Fender photographer. I feel honoured to be in contact with you!
Let me start by making a typo correction, that 0005 should be 0009, the "first" double p.u. Esquire.
I do have a picture of a Broadcaster 0005, it is in Nacho's book, but if you really are John Peden, you know that of course. The two without serial number which I call Esquires are the # 1 and 2 prototypes. The snake head and the one with the "first"six in line tuner headstock. I guess you are familiar with these too. Indeed Richard is a national treasure, I love his book. Further I am a huge fan of early Fender history. This McMinn Esquire is fabulous. I am awaiting Nacho's book on the pinecasters, and hope more of these 'obscure' instruments will surface one day. Maybe there are more out there somewhere. Like the 0033 Broadcaster found on a market.

C'est Moi Yes we are all awaiting Nacho's newest book.. I have had the pleasure of photographing most of the non truss Esquires on your list but I don't recall 0087. I will respect your privacy and not distribute the image if you would be so kind as to share it with me. pedenphoto@mac.com thanks BTW where are you located?

    • @gerritleemburg6777

Dear John, my name is Gerrit, I am 65 y.o. and live in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
I found the picture of 0087 In André Duchossoir's book of the Telecaster.
      Do you have that book?
It is on the left of first page of the color section, page 45 in my copy, which also shows Broadcaster 0027 and Esquire 0013 as well as the first prototype.
The picture of 0087 says: Two pick-up Esquire (#0087) custom built for country artist Hal Hart. The black body is made of pine wood.
Nacho mentions this non truss rod # 0087 on page 23 of his blackguard book, not showing any picture but he says: it has been documented (where?) Does he mean André's book as well?
If you don't have the book, I can scan the pic for you.
      Awaiting with best regards.

Great vid. An interesting read is Dave Hunters book. He makes no reference to any hollow bodied tele until the thin line came out. The earliest Esquire had one pickup and the second was added a little later. The switch is a tone switch, and remained so well into the sixties. These early tele were really hand made, so they to a greater or lesser degree. The prototypes were pine, but the production models were swamp ash. As far as I have read very few production guitars were made form pine.

Richard forgot to tell that the body of this "prototype/pre production" Esquire is much thinner that what went into final production.

I guess that I could be wrong, but I am sure that the jack cup was milled, and that the strap buttons were slightly different on these early ones...wish that he showed those more clearly...but he is obviously a great resource for this information.

Regarding the switch and the enlarged control cavity, some of these very first Esquire models had a push button (visible in advertisements) i.s.o. a switch. That could mean that the cavity was smaller initially.

  • @gerritleemburg6777

At the end of this footage you see Arlis' band. The first double p.u. Esquire helt by Harold Courtright was originally owned by Charlie Aldrich who gave it to steel guitar player Kate, after he got an updated model. Kate let Harold play it.
The question is what did Harold do with that guitar. How and when did Fender employee Sam Hutton get this guitar later on.
Who painted it red? Also what happened to the 0003 P bass. What did Jack McClure do with it.

You see...no leather jacket with zipper scratching the fuck out of it. No flipping the thing around like a broom. No rings clacking all over the neck. That's how to handle a vintage guitar. Thank you.

This would have presumably had the smaller, Precision Bass-type control plate, without a switch, like the 'second' prototype, or the control plate with a push-button switch, like the first production models; maybe even the smaller scratch plate, like the first & second prototypes!?

What I would like to know, is there a neck pick up routing under the pick guard of this very guitar?
Both single and twin pick up, very early Esquires were made. Normally any Esquire would have this routing, but does that also apply to these first models. If they started with a single p.u. item, were they already thinking about a double pick up version?
Or did they make that neck routing on any Esquire after they produced the first double PU models.
    Anyone?
