My first canoe ride was by myself, it was fun after I taught myself how to paddle by just pushing the paddle to the side after a stroke. My friend was mad because when he had to keep paddling left and right because the canoe kept turning on him so I showed him what I was doing and he got it immediately.

I was doing a sprint adventure race yesterday including a canoeing section of 10 km. Even though I do a number of these events per year and thus have some experience paddling, though I never train paddling, our boat seemed a lot slower than other boats. I do try to paddle with core rotation as much as I can and even use my whole upper body in a pulling motion to get as much speed as possible we seemed slow compared to other teams. We did take the only blue boat though while all other teams had green boats. Could it be that the boat itself made such a difference?

The color won't impact your speed :), but if it was a different model of canoe than the others, then that can play a huge factor. Some boats are built more for stability, and sacrifice speed for it.
