We join John and the Opaque Senator (Russ) during these dark times in Transylvania. So now it is up to this duo to put an end to Dracula's terror, and all that serve him.
Dracula has risen from the grave after 100 years have passed, and he reigns terror over Transylvania. The only one to stop him is Simon Belmont, and his trusty whip, the Vampire Killer. Can Simon stop Dracula once and for all?

I read on the wiki that the American version was trying to imply that Castlevania 1, 2, and 4 were supposed to be Dracula having a prolonged battle with Simon as opposed to Trevor who was one and done. The Japanese version make it clear in the opening text that this is the first time Simon is wielding the vampire killer, so it is obviously inteneded to be storyline remake there (similar to Star Fox 64)
I just recently came across this video again, so, sorry this response is several years later. Personally, I can't see this as a remake of the first game, even if that's what it was supposed to be. Okay, the Japanese version makes it clear as day that it's supposed to be the first time Simon fights Drac, but that's in the Japanese version. I guess the 'once again' part just really threw me off, but I wouldn't say that's just Konami being meta with the player, that's just... stupid.
If the US version WANTED this to be a followup to what happens after Simon's Quest, they could've just said this takes place maybe a few days, weeks, or even a few months AFTER that game. So in that sense, I guess it was supposed to be a prolonged battle after all.
I agree with John's assessment that this game is a retelling of the first one, and Simon being "once again" called upon to battle Dracula is actually referring to the player in a meta sense: *"you, the player, are once again experiencing this adventure withSimon Belmont."*
It's poorly translated or badly worded to begin with if so, but that's what I think they meant.
The Belmont has vanquished the horrible edge.
And it's always a great time when Russ is around. ^^

Also John, you bring up how horizontal this game is and why the cross is so good because of that, I hope that means you abuse the axe in Rondo of Blood since so much of that game is vertical.. Its by far the best subweapon in that game.
"Bullets for your cross" immediately reminded me of Wolfwood from Trigun
This is my favorite castlevania game because it is simply go right and face the challenges with your own skill. I also love the change in settings even before going into the castle. Seeing all the different areas and monsters before getting into the real threat made the game feel more alive.

My first Castlevania games were the NES Castlevania, then SOTN, and finally Super Castlevania IV. So I say my love for Castlevania is pretty legit :p
Sadly last one I played was Lords of Shadows....I like it, just have nitpicking. Still need to play its sequel.

So wait... Super Castlevania IV was done already with Johnny and Russ, but Johnny says he's doing IV for SGB. How many of these castles must we destroy?
Regarding why the whip was chosen design-wise, I believe I read somewhere that a whip was decided on specifically because of the wind-up animation. Castlevania was meant to be a slower-paced game, and they wanted timing the weapon attacks to be a major part. Using a whip was a natural-feeling way of delaying the player's attacks long enough for the player to have to form a strategy around that delay.
my first Castlevania game was Dawn of Sorrow. It was a good bit of fun! Then I got Portrait of Ruin and that was really fun!

Super Castlevania IV is a remake of the original Castlevania. The game was localized as Super Castlevania IV with a couple of text changes. I believe the game was just called Akumajou Dracula just like the original NES game.
+Eryth Actually, according to some sites I've viewed, the original manual (and the opening text crawl if you let the title screen idle) imply that this would've been Simon's third time giving Dracula the boot. Guess they didn't want any Belmont facing Drac more than twice.
Blayne06 It would be interesting to get a copy of the original and localized versions to compare. From what I've seen, during localization, the intro and manual was changed to make this a sequel.

Technically by the normal timeline Christopher Belmont and Simon Belmont are the only two Belmonts to ever fight Dracula twice in their given 100 years that Dracula normally cycles every 100 years. It is after Richter Belmont where Dracula and Castlevania itself has been coming back rather frequently, heck not even after the events of Symphony of the Night, Order of Ecclesia takes place after Richter Belmont passes away and it was Richter who was the last to wield the whip in till in terms of active games still a part of the story line Bloodlines where the Whip was wielded by the Morris clan which is a sub clan to the Belmont clan.

Hate to break it to you Johnny, but SC4 is not a retelling of the original Castlevania, you were thinking of Castlevania Chronicles for the PS1. Super Castlevania IV is indeed a sequel to Simon's Quest, not because of the text in the opening crawl, but from what I understand, after collecting all of Dracula's missing body parts, putting them back together, and defeating him once again in Simon's Quest, Simon gained immortality, which kept him from aging. And Dracula X's story... the less I talk about it the better, it clearly didn't age very well.

Johnny it nice seeing you doing this only a few months after Castlevania 3. Though I'm waiting for you guys to get back to Kingdom Hearts 2. But I also can't wait for Metroid Fusion because that's my favorite Metroid game. Followed by Zero Mission.

I just beat this game a few months ago due to your review John and I really liked it I mean it was hard but, I did except for the Dracula battle I died so many times. Castlevannia 3 however I couldn't get passed the first level. Jesus the control is just as terrible as people said.

well I like to think of it as a sequel to 2 because in the good ending of Simons quest a hand comes out of Dracula's grave so this could be a week later
This is a five year-old video by now, but since I don't see anyone else saying this, I'd like to comment for anyone else curious about the whip thing,
Apparently, there was a game development reason as well as a referential reason. When the devs of the original Castlevania NES game tried to create an animation of Simon swinging a sword, they couldn't quite get it to look right. So instead, they opted out for a whip which was easier to animate since a whip can go forward (as well as swings much faster which meant less frames to animate) whereas a sword is typically swung side to side. They also were sort of referencing a light novel called Vampire Hunter D in which one of the characters uses a whip to fight vampires.
The twist is that Simon is actually half vampire, and Dracula is his dad.
Either that or Simon found the fountain of youth.

Bloodlines does replace your subweapon with no way of getting it back, but it makes up for it by giving subweapons their own unique candle sprites, so you know which ones to avoid.
That skeleboss breaking apart and reforming again reminds me of Monsoon from Metal Gear Rising.

The Rape Face I just love the entire exchange between Monsoon and Raiden. It's memetastic! Then again, so are a lot of moments towards the end of that game.

By the way, slashing away at the assholes that were Mistral, Monsoon and Sundowner was so satisfying that it is the only reason I ADORE blade mode
The Rape Face I had completly forgotten about Free Blade Mode by the time that I got to Sundowner. Needless to say, he was indeed "FUCKIN' INVINCIBLE!" for a good few minutes.

I played this game on an emulator some time after the AVGN reviewed it, and I thought it was ok, but that's about it. And I did the same with Symphony of the Night after Johnny reviewed it, and ended up buying it because I really liked it.
There was actually the X68000 game, gameboy trilogy, and Haunted Castle. The Japanese version claims it's a retelling.
I like to stick to the cross in Castlevania 1 and 3, except when dealing with Death in 1. I like having a projectile weapon, it makes dealing with enemies over ledges and over the other side of the screen less stressful.
15:18 I'm curious to know if Russ is a BFMV fan now. If he is, then he's instantly awesome (I'm not really interested in the Saturn library, so this will be the first SGB let's play with Russ that I'll watch)

I know this is a very old video but I believe the reason the game didn't show up on the Snes Jr is because you're using S Video as the video signal, the Snes Jr only supports composite output.

Howdy folks in the comments. I'm trying to get into Castlevania but I'm not that familiar with the series and would like to ask people here who are to recommand me some of the Metroidvania titles except for Synphony of the Night wich I've already played. Just to get a good idea of wich titles to play and wich to avoid since I have no clue.
+Crimson Ace imo all Metriodvania are really good they have some issue in each title but overall it's really good if you want SotN kinda sequel I recommend Aria of Sorrow and also Dawn of Sorrow if you can get pass its gimmick.

I like Simon's Quest, but have a map handy since the game didn't feature one. all the GBA and DS games were metroidvania style (with maps built in), so they're all great choices.
I just got to Dawn of Sorrow but I will say that Circle of the Moon is the hardest so far. Not bad, just hard IMO.
