I love that what you're calling a "smaller hook" is the size hook we use for large cod and halibut. Not even the people going for large pike would use something like that, at least not many of them.

The gar looked like it survived an oil spill and was dirty. Just an awesome catch. Not sure on other parts of the country, but here in the Ohio River valley near Wheeling, WV we are in a terrible drought. In the last 30 days we have had 1 rainfall yielding 0.34" . Currently between D3-D4 conditions (D4 being "Exceptional Drought"). Rock on Nick 🤘😎

Beautiful spotted gar, good sized spot too! Man, I haven’t caught a bowfin, mudfish, dogfish, haha their called something different but is the same fish, all over. Last one I caught was from a paylake, in Ky, and they called it a dogfish. That was probably 30-35 years ago.
Man I just caught my first Grass Carp ever last week, actually hooked into a couple. Such a fun fight, one was 14 pounds. I know they can get much bigger. That spotted gar was awesome looking. Keep up the great content.
There were no floaters (dead ones) or live ones, which would lead me to believe that they were taken out or caught by someone else. You are applauded for your efforts.
I’ve been fishing for gar for weeks in this same pond and they are absolutely all over the place but, I have yet to get one in. I’m using cut up bluegill,shad and various other pan fish. Any tips?

It’s definitely not a big hook at all, for catfish I usually go with 4/0 to 5/0 circle hook
