    Good catch! The coolest thing I have ever done is kind of a toss up between two things. I caught a wild rabbit with my bare hands one day while elk hunting and, one time while fishing a Colorado reservoir when I was a young man, I caught a 6 pack of beer that was in a mesh net, it must have been dropped out of some happy boaters cooler, I thought I had a turtle while bringing it up from the bottom. These may not be the coolest but they are the most fun to tell about. Now, I'm old and drive a SUV with a bumper sticker that says " I used to be cool" thanks for the vid :)

      Catching a wild rabbit bare handed is an amazing feat! I once knocked an empty glass off the table with my elbow and caught it an inch off the floor before it smashed everywhere - I thought that was pretty cool... Thanks mate :)

      Cheers for this, I have been researching "bobwhite quail pens" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Eeyila Rudimentary Expediency - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now ) ? It is a smashing one off product for discovering how to raise healthy and fertile quail minus the normal expense. Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my buddy got cool results with it.

    I've decided that this year's chicks will be next year's breeders. No eggs from older birds will be incubated. This year's breeders will become meat next year, or only used to create eggs for eating until the numbers build up again. Buying a cheap charlie quail egg cutter has really changed how much I eat quail eggs now. Good clip mate!

      Re: cheap charlie egg cutter, are you referring to quail egg scissors? If so, I agree. Such a simple tool, but really makes getting the egg out of the shell so much easier and neater.

    Came here from a link under another video about this incubator and didn't come out with any more real information. Hard to find focused videos on TH-cam, and I guess it's so that they get more watch hours. More people stay around to hear maybe 1 minute of information about on the video title.

    Also, your an Aussie,,,and it's easy to relate to your style and what your doing.

    I remember in a previous vid that you did, I think you caught an adult quail as it tried to fly past you. It was an instant reaction from yourself and looked bloody amazing when you caught it mid air. Sign yourself up to the Australian cricket team mate :-) The incubator seems to work fine to me. Cheers Adam

    Hey Mark. I’m told the lads are less likely to even go over the hen in high heat climates/seasons. (Too hot to cuddle) Leading to lower rates of fertilised eggs.

    • @Selfsufficientme
      @Selfsufficientme  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's interesting Gregory! Could be a reason for the poor hatch rate! Cheers :)

  • @jaredmccutcheon5496
    @jaredmccutcheon5496 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Cool vid. I breed show chickens, so there are a lot of similarities. Your low hatch rate could be like you said, just old eggs, or bad fertility from older birds, but also your humidity in your incubator the last 3 days. If your humidity is too low you'll get a horrible hatch. Check it out next time. I keep mine between 55% and 65% and never open the incubator till they are finished and usually get good hatch rates.

    Hey Mark, thanks for sharing all your knowledge. I have a question.... I started an incubation just after Christmas and now it is hatch/lockdown time but we are having a heat wave. I can maintain humidity but not temp. The machine says it's 37.2 giver or take but I have a little one inside the incubator that hits 39 in the hottest part of the day. I feel this will ruin the hatch. What is your opinion.
    Cheers Rach

  • @StarBarHeart
    @StarBarHeart 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Mark, thanks for the update. How did the incubator go in the SEQ heat? My clutch didn't do so well this time around too. My incubator was overheating daily from the 12th day onwards, sometimes as early as 9 in the morning. Out of 25 eggs only 10 hatched and survived. The really disappointing thing was that only 3 were unfertilised. The rest died just before hatching or shortly after hatching. This was my worst hatch so far.

    • @Selfsufficientme
      @Selfsufficientme  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah the subtropical heat has plenty of challenges regarding the incubation of eggs. Also, the humidity can become an issue if it gets too high so we now keep the incubator in our downstairs gym or often in my study where the climate is naturally more consistent plus I have access to cooling if needed to regulate outside incubator temp so the machine doesn't work too hard. Having said that, you can make everything perfect and still have bad hatches - it just happens... Cheers :)

    You're hatch rate would probably still be better than mine! I have 1 male and 5 females but the male has bonded to 1 of the females and will only breed with her. If i take him and the other 4 females and put them in their garden run he will crow his head off and will run back to the cage if I let him out.

    • @Selfsufficientme

      Chickens for sure. You only need 2 for a reasonable supply of eggs and chicken eggs are bigger plus they taste better than quail eggs (in my opinion) quail eggs are "stronger" in taste because they're higher in protein. All the best :)
