Очень интересный получился разговор об отношении к балету, танцу, о будущем балета и просто о жизни. Сергей Полунин, как всегда, очень искренний и неравнодушный!
Особенно, помимо всего прочего, нравится что Сергей основал школу в Севастополе. Честь и хвала ему за это. Балет и опера были искоренены из Крыма за годы Украины. Выросло целое поколение, которое понятия не имеет что такое балет, симфоническая музыка, оркестр. Спасибо что возродил его вновь и скоро в Крыму мы услышим имена новых прим и танцовщиков Севастопольской школы.

Увы, это тенденция - клиповое мышление, комиксы. Поверхностное. По верхам. Уже установленный факт - вместо Распутина по кабакам и к дамочкам ходил не сам Григорий, а актер, который был очень похож на Распутина и был нанят определенными силами для того, чтобы скомпроментировать его образ.
Но для балетных это слишком сложно, да и японка слишком далека от нашей истории.

- We would like to start with the project Dance Revolution on Channel One. We have watched it. You are a judge there. Honestly, we haven’t understood who is this project aimed at because together with almost professional pairs one can see modern solo dancers and also children with obviously classical ballet background. What kind of audience is all this aimed at?
- I suppose Channel One was trying to make this show for a wide audience, not just for professionals. This show is for professionals as well, but also for amateurs, for both the old and the young. Anyone can take part in this show and win. Every part is more interesting than a previous one. Only two parts have already been shown, and shootings are in progress. Battles begin, and it becomes really interesting when only professionals are left. The teams which participate in the project are great, and the children are stronger that adults. I think that children will finally win. It’s exciting to watch the energy of a team vs a little girl, interesting to watch who will win. It is also interesting for cameramen, and with each new part this interest will grow.
- I saw a very little boy there, aged 9 or 10, obviously from a ballet school. I am sorry, I don’t remember his name.
- His name is Matvey.
- You told him right there that he needs to work hard and that he would be a principal. Did you simply want to support that boy or did you see something special in him?
- He is 8 years old. At eight he does… if he remains the same., it is enough to be a principal dancer. What he does at eight other dancers do at twenty. He does double tours at eight, and I started trying to make them at 13. He can do it already; he is a prodigy. He’s got male dancing, doesn’t smile a lot. It’s important for ballet.
- What is the most difficult age for dancers when they need either to overcome themselves or their bodies in order to push on and achieve great results?
- It’s easier when you are younger. At 29 struggles against your body start because you get to the peak at 28, and then testosterone levels drop and general physical conditions becomes worse. Then you start thinking how to protect yourself.
-We started talking about TV dance shows. There are a lot of them now. I have the feeling that they promote interest in dancing especially among young people because dancing has become more popular. Sergei, do you agree with this opinion?
- Yes, it’s true, and it happens not only in Russia. Dane shows become number one in the world: So You Think You Can Dane in the USA, dance Revolution in Canada. Dancing industry is slowly growing. It’s cool as dancer had less opportunities in the past. We couldn’t demonstrate ourselves, we didn’t have such a massive support of people. When a lot of people support you, you get stronger and do something with it. Ballet is something small and exclusive, an industry with restricted access. To survive this industry needs to open up. Dance should be shown to more people, e.g. on TV. Dancing is life. When we move we are alive. When we stop we get reserved and finally die. I feel that dancing will be the strongest in the virtual environment, especially with the help of the 3D technology. Other industries are more static. Dancing has the future, and it can even become one of the main activities.
- There are people who never sing, but it is hard to find those who never dance. Sergei, you are saying that ballet is mostly for the elite. On the one hand anybody can buy tickets, on the other I am personally afraid not to understand anything in a ballet. Is it so only in Russia or everywhere? Maybe the situation is changing?

- How do people get into professional ballet?
- Mothers usually send their children to study ballet. Mothers like this art, all girls want to do ballet, mostly girls. I would like to change this tendency because boys don’t take ballet. But I can say in ballet boys are always near girls unlike sports where boys stay together with boys. And there are always less boys than girls, e.g. 4 boys and 18 girls. It’s not so bad for boys))
- Is ballet first taught at schools?
- I only studied ballet when at school, I had a very narrow specialization. In the school that we are building in the Crimea there will be various courses including music, singing and acting. Each child will be taught to be an artist.
- Please tell us about your work at the Academy of Choreography in Sevastopol. Is teaching more difficult than performing?
- It’s not more difficult, it is more useful. For me it is the best feeling. When I gave one lesson by chance in LA I realized it is much cooler and stronger than everything else, than performing on the stage. I was getting ready with take me To Church there, and I was provided with a studio in one dancing school. In return I was asked to give a master class. When you see the eyes of children who absorb your every word, who need it and it can have a long lasting influence on them… I felt such a euphoria. Though when I was a student myself I thought that teachers are people who were not successful in life and didn’t want to become one. When you become a teacher after achieving all you could achieve, it’s the highest point in your career. There is nothing greater than that. I don’t teach on a permanent basis; I am just making some small steps. We are building the school, we have admitted the first students, and I help them financially a little. The school is financed both by the state and my fund. I have no chances to do something wrong there because other people control everything there as well. My task is to learn something myself and to consult. I the school in London were I studied there is a swimming pool, a tennis court, a football field. I can say what else the school needs, what else the children could do. As there the sea in the Crimea, it would be nice to make open studios for the children to breathe better, not to place the studios in the basement. We often spend many in studios and don’t see the world around us while nobody sees us. This exchange with nature is very important.
- How to strike the right balance in teaching between being strict and not killing talent in pupils?
- It’s a psychological problem. You need to watch the students. Yes, some of them might understand that they don’t want to do it any longer. We need to realize that we are doing it for their benefit. It’s not about the school, it’s not about a teacher, it’s about the children. We must help them. Perhaps some of them will wish to work at a radio station later. I think it’s important for them to speak. Dancers are always silent, both in school and after it. There is no wish to say something or stand for your rights, or have interviews on TV. It’s necessary to watch what they want. Probably some of them will prefer to be choreographers, some will become ballet or contemporary dancers. In London former students can also study modern styles staring from the age of 21. Students need to be asked what they want because nobody knows what they will finally become. Their mission is in them, but they need to be constantly asked about it.
- Sergei, last summer you created the charity Fund for the support of arts in Russia. Could you please tell us more about it? Is the aim of the Fund to support only dancers or various culture projects in general?
- It’s a creation of a platform where artists could collaborate. We can finance some projects. It can be a movie, it can be dancing, design light design. We also provide financial support for talented young dancers. We find them and help them with schools. Talented kids are generally admitted for free, but parents might need money in order to move to other cities. Sometimes such children want to study abroad, and we will also finance such studies.

- Ballet is more popular in Russian than in other countries and it the roots of it are in the history. In the other world it is more elite. To tell the truth I don’t enjoy watching ballet. I don’t have any wish to go and watch it when I hear the word “ballet”. This industry needs rebranding to make it more accessible. It’s mostly old, not new. I would like to present ballets with new plots, perhaps ballets could be staged by a Hollywood film director and music composed by a DJ. It should be done for modern people who listen to rock and rap music. Ballet is still in the 18th century, e.g. Sleeping Beauty which was created for that time, for kings and queens who watched about themselves.
- On the other hand it is rather difficult to get tickets to the Bolshoi Theatre despite pretty high prices. Sergei used to be the youngest evet principal of the Royal Ballet. But at some point you quitted rather unexpectedly for the others. Was it because you felt ballet is old-fashioned?
- Yes, true, I didn’t see any development, and I was dissatisfied with the whole industry a little. Not the RB in particular, but the ways it was provided to the people, by interpersonal relations. It seemed to me the movie industry is much more developed with more assistance. It is greater and develops much faster. There are agents and managers in the movie industry, and it is growing. There is nothing of the kind in the dance industry, no managers, no agents, no PR campaigns. I have all that now, but it is rather an exception. That is why it should be developed like it happened to football at some moment. In the past football players worked together with playing until managers created the present day system. The world of dancing did not get into that stream, and now there are millions and millions of people in it without any support.
- Does strong competition really exist in theatres? Is it only about ballerinas or is it also true about male dancers?
- it’s easier for men, the situation is calmer. Conflicts can be more tense among ballerinas. Everybody is for him or herself in a theatre. You come to a company with 80, 90 or 300 members like in the Bolshoi, and everybody is fighting against each other to become a leader because nobody has a long term contracts. You never know whether you will perform tomorrow or not. All the decisions are made solely by a chief manager. I would provide everybody with contracts like it is done in the movie industry. You have this role this month, and you have that role. Then there will be no grounds for conflicts and misunderstandings. You have a contract for a year and you are working according to it. There will be no situations that you can perform a certain part because somebody was injured, and if it doesn’t happen you will stay at corps-de-ballet. This strange can be eliminated.
- Why is it not done?
- Because the old system is very convenient. It resembles a lot the one used in the army. Since the time you are at school you are taught to listen and to agree with what you are told to do. Dancers don’t talk and can be easily manipulated.
- How is it possible to depict Rasputin on the stage?
- Yuka is Japanese, but I think she has got a Russian soul. It is very interesting for me to work with her. She is a very open hearted person and has a strong connection with the Cosmos. She doesn’t invent anything, she just opens herself, get the information and she gives all that at rehearsals. She stages performances that we and the audience understand very well. All the details are considered; the whole story is quite transparent. I suppose Yuka was trying to depict them as humans regardless of their high status. It’s a story about the people who had their own experience, worries and weaknesses, they had some power as well. She tried to show them as humans. When you dance this part you understand he was just a human. It’s true, he did have some talents, he could cure. On the other hand, his life was rather frivolous with a lot of alcohol, dancing and sex. All that is depicted in this ballet from different angles. The performance even reveals the story that people don’t know. Yuka read a lot of books and found her own logics in this story which is generally presented in a different way in Russia.

Мне вот кажется, если танцоры кардебалета перестанут стыдиться того, что они в кардебалете, и балетмейстеры будут ставить для них интересную и оригинальную хореографию, и глаза их будут светиться, и балет будет интереснее:) даже в театре, наверное.
Обожаю кордебалет. Очень ценю его в спектаклях, это грандиозно и дух захватывает. Даже не буду перечислять спектакли, где кордебалет есть, это - феерия, восторг. Я преклоняюсь перед танцорами. Сама в зале видела: они взмах делают, и зал встаёт! Люблю Вас, танцоры.
- How are you planning to search for talented children?
- We will have special agents who will look for talents in different regions of Russia. This summer we are having a talent camp. We will invite children, have master classed with them and look for talents. We get applications, people come to the Crimea for hearings. Sometimes I cannot provide them with places in the school there, but can take them into my projects or help gets places at other schools. PR is very important too, and it is already my task.
- Does this Fund have a website?
- The website is almost ready. We have been working on it for a long time, four months already. It is about to start working.
- Are many students expelled?
- I am very much against expelling students. When you take a child it’s a great responsibility. I know people who were expelled one year before graduation. They didn’t get their diplomas and lost 8 years of their lives. There are periods when you cannot expel students. They should at least complete nine years of their education and probably choose something different afterwards. If they go on studying ballet, they should do it till the very end. I hope we will better select children more carefully. It’s a great responsibility.
- Sergei, we would like to talk a little about you. You look like a rock star: your tattoos, your hair… Has your attitude to life ever interfered with your work, with your dealing with more conservative people?
- It can be a problem when dealing with sponsors. Such an image prevents from getting money from the conservative theatre establishment. They don’t want to deal with me, they can’t even appear or be seen together with me because they won’ be accepted in their environment. Sometimes they come to watch and sometimes they even can’t do it. But their names cannot be mentioned, by no means. I indeed have problems. There are different opinions about me in different countries. In Russia I see love from people, they treat me well. In the UK it is such a mixture of feelings: some people treat me well while others hate.
- What do they hate you for? Your appearance?
- They don’t like the fact that I left the Royal Ballet, a very famous one, and that I continue working and I succeed. Not long ago there were really bad article about me in the West. Any other foreign artist would never be accepted anywhere in such a situation. But I keep returning and doing something, and it puzzles them a lot. They give me half a star; the New York Times wrote that me performance was rubbish. It’s an obstacle for me because I would like to have a tour in the US and they say they can’t take it because of what the New York Times wrote. I explain them that the New York Times does bad things to me, so I said something bad about the New York Times too. There was such a moment when I offended them and they offended me, I offended the critics and they offended me in return. There is such a minor war between us and this really hampers getting money because nobody wants to be associated with bad news. Thanks God people go on supporting me by coming to my performances. They are happy and applaud a lot, but not very nice articles appear in newspapers afterwards. And I am given the lowest mark possible, half a star out of five stars.
- Do you train every day or perhaps you don’t need such great workload already?
- I have a ballet class every day after I wake up for about an hour. It helps me to be in a more or less normal shape. Before performances I of course work more depending on what I am planning to dance. I can’t say that I am always in a great shape, it’s strenuous for my heart and the whole body. It’s easy to get into good shape if you are in a theatre and dance for a year. I need to get into shape all the time, and it is very hard. It is like climbing a mountain because when you are on the top it’s easy to stay there. But I travel a lot and have a lot of other things to do, so I lose this form. Instead of getting in to the shape once I do it about 20 times a year, and it’s a stress for my heart.

While I don't know of any recent performances of his available, I am happy to say that you can get a couple of his performances from when he was at the Royal Ballet on DVD. "Alice in Wonderland" (make sure to check for him in the cast , as the RB released other versions after he left. The production year should be 2011). He plays the leading role of "Jack". It's a very fun ballet! He's also in the "Ashton Celebration", a collection of shorter performances. He's the lead in "Marguerite and Armond". And he's the Wolf in "Peter and the Wolf" (although, since it's more of a kid's program, you don't get a whole lot of exciting choreography in his performance.) He also has a couple of very brief solos in in the 25th Anniversary Celebration of "The Phantom of the Opera".

А мне вот интересно, почему всегда говорят, что вот...Если не получишь роль, будешь стоять в кардебалете и т. д. Почему такое пренебрежительное отношение к кардебалету?! Ведь по сути если разобраться, то без них, и балет не балет.
Солисты и премьеры, это конечно хорошо, но всё же, особую красоту и очарование, зачастую создаёт кардебалет...

Полностью! Согласна и поддерживаю Ваше мнение. Кордебалет придаёт невероятную грандиозность балету. Очень сильная школа балетная у наших танцоров. И, когда 24 балерины синхронно двигаются, как можно не восторгаться. Тоже самое свое мнение скажу о танцорах: какое вхождение в образ, в музыку, тела, как античные, каждая мышца работает. Бесподобно, слов нет, благодарю бесконечно
