"But I'd also like to know why exactly they disagree." You and me both. I believe that a downvote should require further explanation. At least via multiple choice if not a text string. I've brought this up on Reddit and HN, but I just got downvoted :) IMHO, downvotes and upvotes are different beasts.

@@I-0-0-I I don't think it's that progressive voices get bot'ed but I do think that anything attached to "women's studies" or "equality" usually gets immediately met with a certain angry internet contingent. It's more likely that enough people got a subscriber notification and downvoted upon glossing over the description. It's a little pathetic that people feel the need to do that, even if they disagree. I would like to think that most regular listeners of this podcast are at least at open-minded, but there are always some disgruntled citizens.

Indeed the devil is in the details. UBI will only works if it's a sum low enough to be enough only for food and minimum hygiene requirements but it also has to be global no matter what. And it also needs a previous requirement of all the monetary systems to be replaced by one single monetary system. This is just a small portion of the new socio-economic system that I am working on. I hope I can complete it before I myself starve to death.

    Dear Mr Carroll,
I have seen several of your videos over the last few years, being drawn to them because of my interest in physics, and I have enjoyed them all. I finally subscribed to this podcast after you mentioned it in one of those videos, about a week ago. I truly appreciate the honesty that shines through in the things you say. I am a little surprised to see this (my first) podcast of yours to be dealing with politics. Lately, I make a concerted effort to avoid political podcasts. But enticed by your honesty (vs your scientific knowledge), I am giving it a shot. I have listened to about 5 minutes of the podcast at the time of this writing. My initial impression is that this poor lady has not been blessed with a voice that is meant for podcasts... it is a little difficult to listen to. But here I go... I am hoping to not have my Sean Carroll bubble burst. I wish us both luck.
Having listened in it's entirety, I think this lady is well educated. But I do not think her thinking is extraordinary. She seems to just stir the pot. Her knowledge of history is cherry picked, but I do see an effort to consider different perspectives. I was disappointed that there is no mention at all of the dishonesty in our society and our politics which to me seems to be the anchor that is dragging us all under. You two have addressed, left ideology and right ideology, while the ology that paints the true picture remains undetected.
All in all, a decent not superb conversation. I will click the like button to acknowledge your honest effort to inform. By the way... there is only one truth. Survival of the fittest. It's the pudding that proves the philosophy.

@@justanothernick3984 question that it’d be “more stable”! Real populations vary. Taking equality as a moral imperative necessarily leads to to a totalitarian approach to “fixing” this. This has generally had unfavorable outcomes when it’s been tried. The alternative is free choice, and the consequences that come with that. In fact I’d argue that’s the only justifiable moral position. I can’t prove an ought from an is, so on what basis do I have a right to tell others how to live their lives?

If I am okay with you starving in the streets, I should be expected to also be starving in the streets.
There needs to be a balance between a wellfare state and free choice. No person is free from hypocrisy and can't consistently stick to his principles which means he can fail and could need a helping hand.

Because will, words and actions are vastly different. And we have opted for this since we have chosen to pay taxes and see that the ones falling behind gets a basic minimum in order for them to survive and not revolt.
