Always love these kind of videos, the cymbals anatomy explanation which reflex theirs sound characteristic.
    Great works.

Would be better if he had been playing jazz rhythms, surely that's the market for these rides!

an unlathed thin 22" is for sure going to have a less loud crash than one that's lathed. and the timbre (pronounced TAM-ber) being "smoky" and "dark" is much more influenced by the unlathed (or abraded-style lathed) surface and a thin weight than any effect light hammering on the bell brings.

I have the 22" Jazz big apple ride and the 20" Dark raw bell ride and the Jazz ride is noticeably quieter when crashed. I know these are less directly comparable than the cymbals in this video but a lack of lathing isn't the only difference in terms of volume. Because they are all weighted slightly different maybe the dark ride is louder here. Bit difficult to tell without being in the room.
Regardless of volume the 22" Jazz big apple ride is a beautiful cymbal and very crashable like the rest of the Byzance Jazz rides.
I think if someone can't make their mind up between these two a blind test would be best, as the sound is ultimately what's most important!

Sound is the deciding factor, yes. I agree lathing isn't the only factor but, all things being equal (in this example, almost all things ARE equal between a JBA and a DBA ride), I simply doubt the unlathed model will be inherently louder because of the way the raw cymbals respond.
