Audrey’s always been Audrey (it helps that the actress has barely aged a day over the years). Gail had a brief resurgence in characterisation around the time she lamped Carla one over her apparent treatment of Nick (not that he didn’t deserve it) but overall hasn’t been her old formidable self since Collinson came a-deck and made his most enduring impact felt (after the tram crash). I miss 2006 Gail.
I think there could’ve been some hilarious scenes with Alf, but even if the actor was well enough to keep playing him longer, the writer’s probably wouldn’t have come up with anything as good. Her character has definitely changed since Alf died.
