Wildhearts are the most under rated band in history. They should be global. I'm an Aussie who was living in London in 1995. Got into Wildhearts - best thing that ever happened. Well done Steve for the review and your passion. Not sure i would be able to rank their albums... all great in their own unique and diverse way. (Same can be said of Ginger's solo stuff!)

I'm late to this party, but wanted to add 'Thanks' and 'Respect' to both of you. If I was trying to negotiate an overview/guide for The Wildhearts it would be so difficult. I completely relate to Steven too. This presentation made me smirk, smile and jump with joy, squirm, raise an eyebrow and much more. Cheers. 🎶🤟😊🎶

THank you for doing this episode guys! I'm from Canada and consider myself their biggest fan here (I dont know anyone else who owns as much of their stuff as I do). I did a ranking episode of The Wildhearts about a week ago... lol Seems we have similar tastes Steven :) i only saw them once when they came to Canada and opened for The Darkness (Must be Destroyed tour) and never heard The Wildhearts... came out of that show a bigger fan of the Wildhearts... lol

As an American, I found out about the Wildhearts in 1998 when Devin Townsend released his Infinity album and on it was this killer song called “Christeen” that was co-written by some dude named Ginger Wildheart. A quick Yahoo search later (it was 1998!) and I found myself on a mission to find Wildhearts albums. Finally tracked down a copy of Earth Vs at a Tower Records in Atlanta and the rest is history. Great band with a unique catalog. Steven’s list is pretty spot on in how I would rank them as well. RIP Mark Keds.

Hi Taylor, I just listened to a podcast with Ginger and he says "I didn't actually write it with him, he just credited me because I was hanging out at his studio I think. I don't know why he credited me, maybe he was inspired by something I had wrote but I never wrote a note in that song. I was in the video as well :-) He's a generous fella that guy, to a point"

Love The Wildhearts and have only just come across this. I have a story relating to their late 90's/early'00's 'drug' years. I saw them at a club in Dudley, UK called JB's. Danny was in the thrall of a terrible heroin addiction at the time. After the third song, someone passed him a bottle of Jack Daniels. He proceeded to swig it all down in one massive gulp. He then started to offer to fight members of the audience, before being escorted offstage by his bass roadie and his girlfriend. They took him outside and walked him around the car park in order to try and sober him up enough for him to continue. Fortunately, the bass player from one of the support bands (AntiProduct) had previously played in a Wildhearts tribute band in his native Japan, so he joined the band onstage for the next few songs. Eventually, Danny came back. Halfway through the first verse of the next song, Danny collapsed into the drums knocking it flying. Ginger ws that angry, he threw his favourite Les Paul against the back wall and stormed off stage. The band broke up before we were out of the venue. The thing is, I've met Danny on numerous occasions, when he was with his post-Wildhearts band The Yo-Yo's (check out their only album; Uppers & Downers - The Clash meets The Beach Boys) and he's a lovely guy. Drugs are bad, mmkay?

    • @DaveyHotrod
      @DaveyHotrod 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

I met Danny a few times over the years. I asked for an autograph on my TV Tan EP cover. Ginger had already signed it the previous year in response to my quip that it would fetch a fortune on eBay "Do not pay more than 50p lv Ginger x" Danny wrote on the same cover "50p is 50p...Dx" This was at a Yo-yos gig in Sheffield - Danny invited me to sit down for a pint with him, Neil & Tom before they went down to set up! For time context The Hives opened the show in front of me and the members of the other bands. They acted like they were playing a stadium, absolute stars!
Since then one of my oldest friends Ginna & a newer but very dear friend JJ were both in the Main Grains with Danny so I ended up hanging out with Danny by proxy. The best was when I went out for a staff party, ended up in hospital with a mild brain injury. I check out went straight to Wolverhampton from York, got lost & missed the gig - The Professionals & The Main Grains. I was just about to go to bed & Ginna wheels Danny into the hotel bar in his wheelchair with a crate of Red Stripe on his lap "Eyup Dave, is the bar open?" The rest of the bunch was just mental, I ended up with Paul Cook from the the Sex Pistols calling me a cunt then buying me drink. Danny's brother Chris, Toshi (he invited me to stroke his trousers, I did) Ben Marsden (current Wildheart), Mark Haldor who did their videos & his ludicrously hot girlfriend - dude was a really good looking dude but he was still batting well above..& I met two of my best friends JJ & Lynsey. This all while at a Halloween gig & I got loads of people saying "cool look..." I was dressed as I always do but after the concussion, my right eye had haemorrhaged I was literally crying blood...

In the UK, the Wildhearts are legendary. As debut albums go, theirs stands up there with the best. They've done tours for the 15th/20th/25th anniversary of their debut album, and at those shows, the audience sing their hearts out to EVERY word. Wildhearts fans are so devoted and really are the best band fans I've ever encountered. For the benefit of people unaware of the band. Think Rock and Roll, Metal, Punk, Pop, melodies, anthems, riffs, The Wildhearts absolutely RULE. Thank you Steven

I was looking forward to this- but I had no idea it was gonna be nearly 50mins long!! Even better! With enough brilliant songs to pack in arenas worldwide, and more rock and roll feuds and frenzy than you could write a book about , the Wildhearts should have been one of the biggest bands in the 90s. Imagine the Ramones and the Replacements being steamrolled over by Motorhead and then stomped on with classic rock swagger and lots of sugar coated spiky pop sensibilities peppered on top. Whatever rock music you like, the Wildhearts will have something for you. From the Beatles to Metallica. Cheap Trick to Husker Du,theres bits of everything in there. "Earth vs the Wildhearts", and "Fishing for Luckies" and "PHUQ" are brilliant 90s rock albums that should be in peoples collection. Many thanks for getting this video together, Pete. Really enjoyed it,and if you get to listen to them, Id love to know how you get on with them.

Great watch, thanks! I strongly empathise with Steve's obvious passion and excitement for the Wildhearts, he needn't be ashamed - seems many of us feel the same! My own collection is not quite as extensive, but not far off either :) my list is different though. I've been dreaming for years about getting some kind of PHUQ/FFL playlist or reissue to experience the originally intended double album. There's motifs that pop up in places on both albums - and on some of what become the (astounding) B-sides of the era - that suggest what could have been that rarest of things; a mind-blowing double album.
    1. PHUQ
    2. Fishing for Luckies
    3. Chutzpah! (Japanese version)
    4. Renaissance Men
    5. The Wildhearts
    6. Earth Vs.
    7. Endless Nameless
    8. ...Must Be Destroyed
When you factor in that every studio album was accompanied by at least a mini-album's worth of B-sides and extra tracks of at least equal quality... it's a genuinely astonishing catalogue. Ginger Wildheart is the real deal!

Also! Being Irish, I really liked the shout out in the video to Kerbdog! They were from Kilkenny, which is justabout 40 mins from where Im from. They had elements of Helmet, Nirvana and again they were tipped for pretty big things at the time, but it just didnt work out in the end. As for Ginger Wildheart- fascinating chap. Never stops writing songs. Alongside the immense collection of Wildhearts music we see in the video here, there is a mountain sized amount of solo material, side projects alongside all that. Its hard to know where to start with him, because theres so many songs and albums to go with!

    • @TranquilityFireReid

@@TranquilityFireReid Kerbogs debut was released when I was about 15. Learning guitar with friends at the time, playing along to "End of Green was encouraging. My mates and me thought it was so cool seeing them in Kerrang! and Kilkenny getting mentioned aswell, cos we lived close to it!! "On the Turn" seemed set to take them off and running, but alas it didnt happen. Cormac Battle got another band going shortly afterwards. These days, theres the occasional Kerbdog show-Christmas gigs. Cormac himself has been a DJ on the main Irish radio station here for years,so I hear his voice all the time.
Therapy? are another band that, had a great run in the mid90s. Still going strong, too of course. "Troublegum" is a great album that I think some of Pete's US audience that are into alternative rock might have missed out on.
Again- many thanks for the entertaining Wildhearts video!! I was glad to see Renaissance Men held highly- that album is a BLAST!!

Completely under rated here in the states for sure! been a fan for decades because of a great friend and several time collaborater infamous here in Seattle Elvis Christ (GRADIE!) who I know did some fill in on tour with Scotts band Sorry and the Sinatra's. I remember they came here to Seattle and headlined at a great but small Club and the local opener was a local favorite and much of the crowd new it was their last show so they had a good turn out. But since Seattle crowds are often fickle.. unfortunately only a small number of crowd stuck around for the Amazing Headliner from the UK! it was a few open minded people, the band members of the opening bands who knew em & let me tag along and meet theWILDHEARTS! , and us who knew of them basically hollered out our favorite songs and they played em and we all sang em together.. it was amazing and felt so candid, but obviously the band was pissed and they havent been back! DAMNIT SEATTLE! its not the first time Ive heard a touring band say FUCK THIS TOWN! NEVER COMIN BACK TO THIS HOLE IN THE MUD! But anyway! I will always be a huge fan and will forever be ROOTING FOR THE BAD GUY! amazing songs often brilliant words sung with power and melody! diversity and unique style! I love em as much as you Steven !! and Yeah GINGER is a great dude and just a genuinely funny and inspiring motherfugger!!

A few corrections: Mark Keds (RIP) DOES play on the b-sides of Just in Lust. His vocals are very prevalent on S.I.N. and Friend for Five Minutes. Also, Scott Sorry does not sing lead vocals on The Sweetest Song. The Wildhearts were angered by the label's plan to release Fishing for MORE Luckies. The version with the fish on the cover IS the version that was endorsed by the band, and as you correctly state, included some previously unreleased songs. Lastly, "Shut Your Fucking Mouth..." has more lyrics than just the title.

Hi Pete and Steve, thanks for a brilliant run through the Wildhearts. One quick comment, I believe that the greatest debut album was Never Mind The Bollocks by The Sex Pistols and it remained so until 1993 when Earth Vs The Wildhearts was unleashed upon an unsuspecting world. Endless Nameless is a work of art and in my opinion is the creative pinnacle of the band. Doesn’t sound like anyone else. Sonically mind blowing. “Great songs wrapped up in an awful sound” (I’m paraphrasing as I can’t be arsed to scan the video back) makes it sound like they didn’t know what they were doing, or that the mix was shit, but it couldn’t be further away from the truth. Do yourself a massive favor- if you don’t own this album BUY IT. Ideally get the 2 cd version with all the b sides if you don’t fancy searching for all the single versions. Sit down, turn your phone off, lock the doors and crank it on a decent stereo. Then if you want to venture further down that road go out and buy a copy of ginger’s project MUTATION. Its all genius and a layer cake of madness, distortion and augmented sounds.

Love your passion Steven thanks for introducing me to the Wildhearts. Are you a Sensational Alex Harvey Band fan? I have the same passion for them that you have for the Wildhearts.

Thanks Captain! I was a relatively late comer to SAHB but love them now!

TranquilityFire Reid - Awesome!! Maybe we can convince Pete to do a ranking the albums of SAHB?

@@captainbeyond7469 That's a good suggestion, I'll add that to the list of ideas I have. Oh and Captain Beyond were a great band too!

TranquilityFire Reid Thanks Steven yes that first Captain Beyond album could be sighted as the blueprint for prog metal. Enjoyed the Europe show today going to explore their catalog.

Brilliant stuff, even though I'm not really a fan of the Wildhearts. Steven's enthusiasm makes me want to revisit. Any plans for a Clutch albums show Pete?

Saw Clutch a few years ago -way too slow and old school,, bored the pants off me. Triggerfinger supported, way better.
