- I keep hearing that western comics are dying in comments on videos, but this is the same thing I've heard for the last 40 years, and people have been saying it for 70 years if we're being honest.
What follows is a look into all the times western comics have been dying, how they've come back, and some actual data from publishers, retailers, and industry publications on who's selling what, and at what volume. I'll also delve into just how crazy woke manga and anime often is, and if it's more or less accessible to current audiences.

Are western comics dying? | Is Manga outselling comics because it's not woke?
Great points.
The only reason I left comics is bc they were 4 bucks an issue for about 8 to 12 minutes of original entertainment. Competition from Free/Low Cost entertainment from the internet is more damaging to comics than any other “X is killing comics”
@@hobokoala2623 i’d really like to see them either go back to printing 4 color on newsprint for $2 or start doing ashcan b&w trades for $5. Cost REALLY is killing people. I didn’t touch on how expensive comics are, I am saving this for another episode but this is a VERY good point. I DID mention how mu h crazy cheaper manga is.
no one gives a shit about made up terms like "woke" or "unwoke" western comcs are dying because no one goes to comic book stores, and because people are losing interest in superheroes in general.
No they're not.
@@MatthewMoreau”no” Doesnt elaborate further. Useless comment
@@SpaceBoyDigital People still go to comic book stores. There, not useless anymore.
I think the biggest difference is that Western comics is dominated by specific IPs (Marvel and DC), constantly rebooting and retreading old ground with the same characters, where Manga IPs are rarely redone the same way, there might be many series that have many of the same tropes or very similar format but tells it with new worlds, new characters, new styles that all tweak the formula to make a new and interesting story.
Which is why (and this has been true for the longest time) comics outside of the "big 2" are the most interesting. Publishers like Image are thriving with lots of different artists and writers getting the opportunity to make completely new and interesting stories. They just don't have as easy a time of getting noticed as Manga because they don't have a Shonen Jump/Animal House style regularly released sampler to get noticed in.
And the infrastructure really helps for Manga. Get picked up by Shonen Jump, make something good enough to find a fanbase, who will buy enough of your content to fund you into 100+ issues, then anime studios start circling, it gets picked up and thats normally when the western market sees it, at which point the western market have a netflix binge worth of content to read, a new show to watch, and they might fund more anime adaptations, more arcs, and the writers can keep going till it reaches a natural conclusion and just END. Go make something new and the cycle can start again.
Both hxh and one piece are woke af
For me, when one says western comic books are dying in North America, I tend to think superhero comics are the ones dying, while other genres of comics are rising. Whether it's sci-fi, historical comics, fantasy, juvenile, historical, westerns, horror, mystery/crime, action/adventure, or humor titles, it's usually superheroes that are associated with western comic books. So what they really should be saying are that the superhero comics genre is dying.
@@CosmoShidan yes. If anything Boom and Image are doing pretty well.
What about Ultimate Spider-Man?
@@MatthewMoreau How many years has it been since Ultimate Spider-man and the Ultimate Marvel Universe has been in publication? Didn't that universe go out of publication along with Ultimate Spider-man?
@@CosmoShidan They keep coming.
@@MatthewMoreau Well, I may be speaking to the choir on this one, but according to Forbes, superhero comics make up about 10% of the North American audience, while Juvinnile comics 41%, while the fantasy, sci-fi, horror, humor, historical, and mystery make up 21%, and manga makes up 28%. In other words, it turns out that more comics readers are leaving superheroes.
Most of the manga I've read are woke
Yes.
America is the as a media powerhouse

This time it different with stores closing
@@nendoroiddancing7361 citation needed dawg. Which stores specifically and where. Every comic shop I know in my small city sells manga. Gaming supplies as well. None of them are closing. Any in surrounding cities as well. I see articles of restaurants closing frequently but I’m not seeing any comic shops in the general midwest where I’m at. Idk if you have a citation of one recently where they owners cited declining comic sales as the reason their store closed, sure ok. Why didn’t they sell anything else like…every other LCS?
Good points here. Personally i prefer western comics, i have never read a manga because the art style of manga/anime in general really doesen't draw me in. Yes American comics are facing issues rn with lack of creativity but there have been worse times like the 90's or 50's. I think that continuity is why many people prefer manga as it can be a headache to understand things with 60+ years of stories. But if you put that aside i think that american comics have done things that probably heavily inspired manga too.
so comics have been on the decline for decades its not new manga is outseling cause its just better period, no ads, digestable volumes, no buying stupid other issues ands bad retcons ...as well as manga has and end point eventually, its not a capitalist cash grab, as well as not all superhero . manga is also progressively better been "woke" since the 80s... also mangais stronger with female protagonists and very lgbtq friendly . ... and if thats not your thing there are manga thats about other stuff they write for the art and quality of story not to cash grab
I mean they sell less, comic book stores are closing anf struggle to make money. Shrinking buyer base outside of manga.
I don't see any closings anymore.
One piece one of the top manga is incredibly woke. Xmen has always been woke and a leading comic. Mouth breathers finding something to cry about is not new.
You don’t know what woke is if you think OP is woke. Haha. Because woke people hate on OP all the time.
@@austinhill5550 both are literally about fighting fascist governments for equality.
@@skatetim777 can you briefly summarize the general substance of one piece without sounding woke then please.
Lol I don’t think you know who ‘woke people’ are because Oda is clearly left my dude. He just likes drawing boobs. Sentences I can’t believe I’ve had to write for this show smdh.
X-Men has been woke since like the 80s maybe if we accept a charitable definition of woke. I don't see how one piece is woke without using an EXTREMELY generous version of the term. I guess you can go all in praise of shadows and argue everything good is left etc etc
@@EmperorofChinaItwillgrowlarger got it. What statements from Oda back up your claim. I’m basing mine on subject matter and output, has Oda made a statement defining his political stances?
Every single critical review on One Pieces political stance is reinforced through a marxist reading of the text and action. The crew is literally leading a proletarian revolt against a bourgeois world government’s Celestial Dragons, and I’m far from alone in this interpretation. Maybe…idk, read the manga?
braindead take hxh is like the most woke thing with images u can read
Magna is outselling because it has better stories and everything else is dogshit
I think Manga is outselling superhero comics, but 21% of the comics audience in N. America are non-superhero readers, while 10% are superhero readers, 28% are manga readers, and 41% are juvinille readers. This is according to Forbes magazine.
Ya, had to turn off the video as soon as you make statements about manga when your knowledge on the matter is clearly limited.
Lol. I’m current on One Piece and Hunter X Hunter but sure.

The answer is no; manga covers alot of themes yall conservatives dont like.
What? I love the diversity of manga except only a few genres. Everything else is cool and I have a collection since 2004.
