  • On 15 Feb 2017 I visited the Gariep Dam, South Africa's largest water reservoir. At the time it was at 61% of capacity, but by the time of publishing a week later it was already at 73%.

    Nice video, thanks. However, sadly missing is the inlet to the Orange-Vis tunnel at Oviston, which is one of the interesting features of the Gariep Dam. I know it was mentioned some years ago by Johannes Weitz, but I wanted to bring it up again because Oviston is situated on the farm Zeekoegat which is adjacent to my great-grandfather's farm, Beschuitfontein.

    Dirk part of the Dam is the inlet at Oviston, you can drive a bus in that tunnel that runs underground for approximately 85 kilometer. The outlet is in Steynsburg District on your way to Middelburg, You can visit the tunnel as it runs underground close to the mountains Koffiebus and Teebus. You can also visit the place where the water from the Gariep Dam as it exit the tunnel, runs into a Canal towards a dam and then the Fish River. The tunnel can carry 55 cubic meter of water per second.

    I used to work for the CSIR in the 1970s doing studies on SA reservoirs. Some of them used to have water almost as clean as distilled water. Hartbeespoort was one such dam. We did surveys and told government what was going bad. Nobody listened but just kept polluting almost every river in the Gauteng and north west areas. It’s got worse since the 1990s with municipalities unable to treat sewage properly. You need videos such as this one to be done for every dam and shown weekly on tv. You’ve got a lot of travelling and talking to do Mnr Grobler.

    Is daar geen moontlikheid om sommige van hierdie water per pypleiding te herlei na sommige van Kaapstad se opgaardamme?

    • @Deontjie
      @Deontjie 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Daar is 'n pyplyn van die Gariep na die Oos Kaap. Maar ek dink nie ons nuwe regering sal so iets kan reg kry nie.
      Maar as hulle wil raad vra, sal ek dink om in die somermaande, water van die Gariep in die omgewing van Kakamas deur die Tankwa Karoo te lei. Daar is klaar rivier lope soos die Sak en Riet rivier wat kan gebruik word. Dan miskien deur die Karoopoort na die bo lope van die Breërivier. Dan is dit net 'n katspoegie vêr na die bo-lope van die rivier wat Voëlvlei dam voed. As die regering nie te korrupt is nie, en hulle stel privaat inginieurs aan, dan kan die hoeveelheid kanale en tonnels tot die minimum beperk word. Dink hoe lekker gaan Tankwa se karretjie mense in daai kanale speel.
