Very useful man, the fact that you explain what each line and flag does is great. I've been trying to fix my passthrough for weeks now and I just find find tutorials with "put this there.. create this file here..." and no explanation on what's going on. Thanks for it and keep like that!
I have been trying to passthrough a GPU on a x58 p6t deluxe with a xeon for over a year without any success with couple of custom mb bioses because the dmar tables on this asus mb are broken and not fully supporting vt-d and countless hours of plowing through old forums seeking a solution. Following every step of this video, now it works without a single problem with no performance hit when gaming for over a month. Thank you for this video!!
I'm glad you finally got it working. I have definitely went the "plowing through old forums" route until my eyes were bleeding, and it feels like the clouds have parted when it finally works. Cheers
Ha! I have the same motherboard and had the same issues. I then misread another guide that suggested my processor (an X5670) wouldn't support passthrough anyway. Was right about to give up on Proxmox and just move over to an Ubuntu server on bare metal. This saved my setup!
Important to note that this graphics card is reserved for use by the VM you’re passing it to. Another VM will need another graphics card passed to it. A single graphics card can’t shared across multiple VM’s.
@@mg3299 IXC hardware transcode? Sorry I am not familiar with "IXC" in terms of an abbreviation and I am not getting hits on searches. Hardware transcoding relies on encoding hardware. Intel integrated GPUs and Nvidia GPUs encode fairly well and NOW you can buy something like a P400/P600 quadro or even a new Arc A310 for fairly cheap and get fantastic performance (the Arc 310 also has AV1). You CAN use vGPU to split a card and you CAN use this process to use a VM for transcode I believe. However I would recommend you consider a separate cheap card to fully dedicate to your transcoding especially if you have a spare PCIE x4/x8/ or x16 slot.
In the Scenario that you use vGPU to split a card and you dedicate a profile to a VM for transcode, MAKE SURE your GPU has robust encoding. The GP104 pascal chipset DOES have dual encoders and I believe the GTX1070-1080 or Tesla P4 are good choices for most basic h.264/265 encoding.

Great video! So are you saying when you passthrough the video card, the virtual machine uses directly the video card and monitor plugged to? Cuz of this, you cannot see it on console, right?
I own a Intel NUC NUC6CAYH and wanted to passthrough the on board graphics (Intel HD 500) but I can't get it work and don't have any idea why. And what about the sound in the virtual machine through HDMI to the TV? this is a very interesting question. if you don't add a second video card device does the sound still output to the TV?
I'm not sure what your asking. Are you using the video card for transcoding and playing the video on a Roku, Fire stick, another computer? You need to get that from the VM before you set the GPU passthrough.
OMG! I finally was able to passthrough my rtx 2060 super to my windows vm in Proxmox thanks to your tutorial! Thank you sooo much! Out of all the tutorials on TH-cam. Yours, was the best one, and the only one on Proxmox 7.0. I'm on 7.1 and it works. I'm able to remote desktop and it's really cool. However, I also have my rtx 2060 super connected to my 50 inch LG via HDMI cable, which is how I intended to use my HPZ620 to game, but no signal comes out of there. Only in remote desktop. how can I output to my TV as well? Show me this power.
My HpZ620, doesn't have any onboard video. Only my RTX 2060 Super. Does this matter?
Hi Eric. You say you have your rtx 2060 connectged to your 50" LG. How did you make it? I mean...I might be totally wrong but in my ideal world I would be able to boot my Win11 VM on start and have it directly on my 32" HP Monitor. Do I have to make specific adjustments to the VM settings?
Try not selecting the gpu as the primary gpu. Then see if you can access the vm with you tv. If it works I would imagine you will need to passthrough a keyboard and mouse.
Here's one of the commands I couldn't find.
echo "options vfio_iommu_type1 allow_unsafe_interrupts=1" > /etc/modprobe.d/iommu_unsafe_interrupts.conf
