Lady Macbeth is not crazy -- until later in the story, when, tormented by her role in the murder, she becomes crazy.

The arrow scene was done by having students from an archery school standing on a plate from a few feet away from Miffuni he was in real danger but the students were trained to shoot arrows while riding a horse when A.K. just wanted to used to best shots amongst the crew. It's surprising to me when I hear people were forced to read Shakespeare in school from the time I was 4 my dad introduced me to Shakespeare and if I'm not mistaken the original director was Ishiro Honda the director of godzilla

I have the DVD.What a masterpiece. I love all Japanese samurai films from the 1950s&1960s anyway. Kurosawa could rival Spielberg and Scorsese without question.

Akira Kurosawa is superior than these two. Akira Kurosawa is basically their film teacher

Dude, I really appreciate this!! You have a strong understanding of noh and its impact on the making of this masterpiece (by far my favorite Kurosawa film). This film inspired me to expand my modest collection, now I own quite a few noh masks because of this movie, including the noh version of the witch (noh name=Yamanba) Mifune meets in the forest.

This was a wonderful review, I am so happy to see others who appreciate this absolute classic of cinema. It's amazing how, despite the time it was made in, this film is far scarier than most horror films I've seen. The Witch's voice is like a hundred demons all swirling around a body, it's eerie as Hell. And Toshiro Mifune was so amazing in the lead role, he really looks like a seasoned warrior who could command respect. A perfect casting choice on Kurosawa's part!

Thank you! Yes the entire atmosphere is very brooding, It's pretty amazing what Kurosawa created. Also its pretty funny how the effects look a thousand times better than the crappy cgi we see in movies today.

All his samurai films are excellent and many of his other films as well. One of my other favourite samurai/horror film I love (saw it in the 60’s) is Shindo’s Onibaba. A haunting film I’ve watched several times and find something new every time.

I’ve never read Macbeth either, but this makes me want to. Kurosawa’s truly the master of the camera from Rashomon onward. The aesthetic of this film is probably the best part, tied with Mifune’s performance. Even though I do think there’s some story problems, it’s in my top 5 of my Kurosawa chronological journey.

I just finished it and my goodness is it haunting. It’s not much of an epic though.

I just saw this last night. I wish I saw this a long time ago. I am really impressed with the story telling, cinemathography, and acting. I found the hauntings kind of creepy as well.

Great review! I love the tone and atmosphere you brought to it! I've never thought of Throne of Blood as a Halloween film but you convinced me it absolutely fits!

Thank you sir! I didn't realize it until I recently revisited it and yeah... it works really freakin well as a horror film! There's such a haunting atmosphere throughout that never let's up and there really isn't anything uplifting or redeeming that happens. A pure decent.

I saw this when I was about ten years old. I had just a few weeks prior seen the Seven Samurai which I loved and which became my all time favorite movie. I thought this would be similar. :D Great movie but at the time it gave nightmares. :D

@@bushidoblues9302 Yes! Love the Attack/You are in hell scene in Ran, but Kurosawa earlier effort at Macbeth captured Shakespeare original better...in addition to scaring the bejesus out of me
