These points are all valid, but this ignores the annoyance of the "noise" comments. Imagine going to Target, looking to specifically get Coke Zero, and someone over your shoulder says "I would never get Coke that has artificial sweetener. I've heard [such and such about Coke Zero]. I can't imagine why anyone would even want that." The Cars & Bids listings are filled with that useless nonsense as if each listing is a reddit or forum post called "discuss this car" not "discuss the car listed in the auction in the interest of facilitating a sale for the right price."
A listing for a 996 with the IMS bearing replaced: "I'd never get a 996. The interiors are plasticky garbage. I'd only ever consider a 997 or newer." There's nothing for the seller to reply to other than "Um, good for you."
A Ferrari 575M with an F1 transmission: "A Ferrari without a gated manual is an engine without a soul." Uh, cool. Great addition to the conversation." Too bad the people actual making bids are 100% on-board with the F1 transmission.
These comments aren't useful for the seller or any of the actual buyers, and if you were to categorize comments on Cars & Bids listings, this would have a prominent spot, and this video ignores it. Worse, sometimes these comments lead to either echo chambers of non-buyers piling on as if this is social media post with the provocative, enlightening title of "Do you like this car?," or even worse than that, it triggers an "internet fight" which has nothing to do with the listing or facilitating a deal or sharing info about the specific car in question.

      "this video ignores it."
The video ignores it just like actual buyers and sellers do. Yes, those comments are noise, and real buyers and sellers realize that. I've bought and sold many cars on the auction sites, and I've never paid attention to those comments. No one does. So who cares? They aren't hurting anyone, annoying thought they may be.
I would argue many internet comments are just noise, but maybe that comes from years of experience on TH-cam :)

Have bid on both C&B and the other site and found comments to always be helpful. A great example is a few Bentley Continentals that were exported to "Finland" and returned to the US years later with next to no miles accumulated. Some commenters pointed out that these cars were definitely sent to Russia and had the odometers rolled back when sent back, and when you look at the undercarriage, the discrepancy is clear between the ODO and the realistic mileage. I've definitely seen some bidders try to put cold water on an auction - specifically on a Giulia QV where a commenter repeatedly posted about how important the serpentine belt service is, the cost, and pointing out over and over it hadn't been done (the car was barely do), later bidding on the auction himself. This was transparent to me but may not be to everyone.

I used the comment sections of various auctions of many cars to determine what model, year to buy, options deemed to be of value, what to stay from etc. etc. as a result I feel much better informed.
For example I used comments to determine which used SL 55 to purchase. In the end I really wanted a r230 Mercedes. I bought a 2007 (updated r230), low mileage, fully serviced and loved SL 55 AMG with the P30 option. As it turned out it is very very desirable being that it is white with grey interior and pano roof. I love it. Without comments I am not sure how I would have learned enough to be a serious buyer.
In fact I also bought my 2023 E450 All Terrain after listening to Doug’s quirks and features. I also use the comment sections to learn about cars friends are interested in.

I've auctioned two cars -- both 90's Japanese icons, one collector grade that set records and one driver grade -- and the comments made each of those auctions the worst week of my life.
The issue isn't that "anybody can say anything", it's that some people treat these websites like a car forum rather than an auction site. Hundreds or thousands of comments, zero bids, zero sales. They have no skin in the game. Please leave. It's like letting a million people into a Mecum auction when there are only 20 people bidding, and then asking every one of them what they think.
The first auction website that figures out how to curate the comments -- valuable or useful comments allowed, noise comments from people who aren't buyers removed -- will be the auction website that wins long-term. As it is, I'll likely never sell another car this way again. The process is horrible.

I think there should also be transparency on the people commenting. For example in iRacing if you want to race yo do not get to pick a username. You have to race using the name on the credit card that made the account. It adds accountability and takes away the ability to hide behind the anonymity of a username. Is this a perfect solution? No. Just something to think about.

Cars and Bids biggest issue for me is the aggressive moderation of the comments. They delete some almost immediately even when they are intended to be constructive. I’ve been around a long time on this site and the other auction site and pretty much know what’s going to get flagged. The comments section to me makes or breaks a car since generally one is bidding on something sight unseen and you can get a sense of the seller by how they manage the comments. I’ve been a seller too and being responsive is extremely important to the success of the auction. I’ve seen so many sellers tank their auctions by either not participating, participating in a very nonchalant way or just flat out not knowing anything about their cars.

With the comment section I was able to ask why the brake fluid was changed twice in 3 months.
The owner responded and said because he tracked the car. For a moment I was like whoa. Then I realized the confidence the seller had to track the vehicle before putting it up for sale that it must have been a very durable and dependable car.
Although I asked the question during the auction and did not win the vehicle…I thanked the seller and believe the vehicle was presented well

GREAT TOPIC! this is good content - i have a very serious question that i encountered many months ago on a high end exotic car on another bidding platform (it's been many months) a car i had been watching languish at a too high price on a dealers site suddenly disappeared so i assumed it had been sold, but then the same car appeared on this unnamed car bidding site. interested still i began watching the car get bid up over a few days and the car was tapering off to what i felt was the correct fair market value and what historically similar vehicles have sold for suddenly this new bidder came in (with no buying history) and bid against a couple of seemingly serious bidders until the car moved up into a higher range and the other bidders dropped off leaving only this "new" bidder who had pushed the car into what seemed too high of a price - so auction ended and this new bidder won the car. Then a few weeks later this high end exotic was listed again back on the dealers site where it had originally been sitting for many months... so i cannot say for sure, but yeah i think this implies what i felt happened. so i felt this was unscrupulous if say hypothetically the selling dealer came in and bid up a car beyond what real buyers were willing to pay then "won" their own car and then the car silently reappears back on the site it had been listed before the car auction site - thoughts? it made me very cautious of the dealer after that and also bidding sites as if i was bidding i would not be happy if fake buyers come in just to boost the sale... i'd love to see a video on your thoughts if such a thing did happen? has anybody seems similar happen? thank you.

Another thing I’ve noticed is little seller engagement also can hurt. On another auction site, there was an OBS Ford F-150 with 3,100 miles up for sale. The first auction the seller made two comments that didn’t really address any bidder concerns; the truck didn’t meet reserve. The second auction(using the exact same pictures and everything) the seller never commented, and the truck brought less than the first auction. To me, the seller came off as disinterested and/or lazy, and I’m sure that hurt the final bid

This video brings good valid points. However, it wasn’t an objective video. Came from the point that comments for the most part are good and those bad ones don’t have an impact.
However, when you are selling a car on the site and someone comments on it creating some doubt about a particular area, it doesn’t matter how good you answer, the doubt is already there. In my case, I sold an S2000 and at the last 24 hours I had commenters demanding that I “must” take pictures of the trunk because there was some surface rust from the bottom.
A picture from the inside wasn’t enough and some commenters (none of them bidding of course) insisted that I must remove all trunk interior to “prove” that the car didn’t have rust.
The trunk was loaded with all extra parts provided with the car plus I was working the day that action ended.
Dismissing comments like that saying that real bidders don’t look at that just not real as I would look at that and thinking twice for rust issues on any car I’m looking at.
We are bringing cars to the site providing money to the C&B, commenters aren’t. They just messing with other people business.
I sold another car. It was a BMW 230i M sport and commenters were implying the car was track a lot because the car had good pads and brake lines. Someone please explain me how that help me as a seller.

This has taught me that using a car auction site wouldn’t be for me, both as a buyer and as a seller. As a buyer I wouldn’t want to see the seller replying to a bunch of comments. I’d think they’re being defensive and I’d wonder what else they’re hiding. As a seller I’d be using the site because I’m not a pro at this and I would assume the job of replying to comments falls to the moderators.

The comments section of C&B & BaT is absolute garbage. Its 95% social media, 5% relevant conversations about the car. GLWTS and a story about your uncle is unnecessary, and almost entirely from people with no intention, or no funds to purchase the car.

Guys, guys...guys...stop. Just stop. Comments are good for YOU...for Doug DeMuro, owner/operator of Cars and Bids. If comments continuously drove the prices of cars auctioned on Cars and Bids DOWN? They would kill all comments immediately. So, this is a really flawed topic before we even hear the discussion. Comments aren't offered to be "fair and balanced" to the marketplace...that's just merely the packaging and how you present that as a "quirk and feature" of your sales process. Comments consistently drive the final closing price of your auctions up, which lines your pockets and that's just good ol' capitalism. Please stop trying to convince us of what nice people you are.

    • @CB21001
      @CB21001 4 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

I mean duh? Of course it helps C&B, but it also helps sellers if C&B can deliver strong results. The comments helps buyers with transparency and accountability, whilst also improving results. Of course it helps C&B, but it also benefits everyone else, so I'm not sure why you're acting as if they're just leeching money from people without offering a benefit to anyone

Good discussion, but missed an important point. Sellers' time is not free. They may have many demands on their time. I understand your point that a "good seller" should reply professionally to legitimate questions, but it's not reasonable to reply to every question from the peanut gallery to "win over" the commenters.
