Growing cranberries in the middle of the map?

  • When you think of growing cranberries, what comes to mind? For most people, the thought of growing them anywhere other than a bog, would be crazy. And we were no different. But we have to beg to differ on our own accord after successfully growing our own cranberries in the middle of the map.
    These are called pilgrim cranberries and they are an edible ground cover. These produce healthy, nutritious cranberries that grow as a ground cover. Great for landscaping or as an ornamental plant, you can grow food that no one would notice.
    These are very drought tolerant and cold hardy as well.

    I love cranberries, not sure why I never thought about growing them myself. Thanks for sharing.

      Yeah... i think that its bc we are all conditioned that they only grow in bogs, but these are definitely home grower friendly!

      Original LuvBug they seem to grow well with the blueberries. To make acid soil use sulfur or aluminum sulfate. If you grow blueberries good they should grow fine.

    Yum cranberry relish!!!! I just ordered 3 different varieties and am thinking about where to plant them. I have a poor drainage yard, do you think they’ll do OK or should I build a berm to plant them on? Thank you!

    • @GardenMack
      @GardenMack  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They should be ok UNLESS it is continually standing water for days on end...I would berm them up then...and really you might want to go ahead and berm them regardless to be on the safe side.
      The good thing is that unlike other crops ...well draining soil is not major requirement of this/ these plants.

      Cranberries growing well. They grow fast , grew few inches in few weeks in ground with pine needle mulch. Blueberry plants loaded.

      Update 2nd year cranberries are spreading and flowering under the blueberries and taking off nicely. The long stems can be buried and they root and spread themselves.

    Do you think I can grow them in north texas? I need this for prepping because of my constant bladder infections

    • @GardenMack
      @GardenMack  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that you should be able to. While they don't need a bog .. in your area you will definitely need to make sure to keep them watered well. Really hope you give this a try and can get a good harvest to help fend off your constant bladder infections.

    Hey There Nick how's the cranberries doing? As a sprawling groundcover do you know if they will help suppress weeds

    • @GardenMack
      @GardenMack  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey ! I actually sold them ... but from the feedback that I have gotten from those that have bought them... they say that they have done well. As for a full weed suppressant I think that you would have to have quite a few and mature ones becuase they are pretty spindly in the beginning for the first couple seasons.

    How much do you have to water them, I hear they should never dry out .

    • @GardenMack
      @GardenMack  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I kinda left them to their own vice to be completely honest. These aren't necessarily the "bog" type of cranberries that most people think about. Just kept them watered well until established and then they did their thang from there.
