the most amazing part is these guys where doing this stuff while most people were doing disco shit. truly waaaaaaaaaaay ahead of their time. no one else was even close to doing anything this original in '75
You can certainly can say that again. That's probably why the Minimoog is one of the most beautiful synths and of course the Prophet 5 which also has a lovely wooden chassis. They 're also definitly one of the best sounding synths there is.
Über 30 Jahre als und noch immer ein Meilenstein der Musikgeschichte. Ein Vorbild unzähliger Elektro-Bands.Diese revolutiönare Technik "damals" ist schon geil...
These men deserve the respect of every electronic music lover. I personally don't like their music, but I can see how what they done back in the 70s influenced generations of musicians to come. They built custom instruments to express themselves through music. True visionaries and fathers of electronic music. Where would we be today without them?
Aw man I still love this stuff,we built unconventional technotronic sound generators and used a guitar pickup to play with a pearing knife and even used near dead batteries for the voltage drop "A tribute to a dead battery"it was called. There was no beat box or drum machines back then, so we played live electronic jazz that was progressive, all mistakes or broken connections left in the masters, became part of the art.Still thinking about reformatting and posting on TH-cam with some sort of vid
love it! 'eliminating keyboards completely and build jackets with electronic lapels that could be played by touch'! definitely Ralf Hutter humour going on there.
Aaahh this is awesome, I'd never seen this bit before eventhough there was a point in time when I scavenged and collected Kraftwerk videos like a deranged squirrell. Lovely.
I remember listening to the original recording of this in July 1975 in England, and it made me dizzy. It actually scared me! How funny is that? Of course, I was only 10 then, so I'd llove to hear it again and see what my reaction is. I love this group!
This is just amazing! History in the making... Thanks so much for uploading!!! If it wasn't for the internet we'd never have access to stuff like this... (sight of satisfaction) xoxo
desde adolesent aprendi a gostar deles e m praser telos novamente tinha eu os discos em vinil mas foram roubadas eles sao maravilhosos.flavia goiania go brasil
I know what that is like. I got hooked on Kraftwerk from a documentry on tele eight years ago. And everyone else was hooked on alternative rock or hip hop. I dig innovative electronic music.
The jazz saxophonist Wayne Shorter once pointed out that your nervous system runs on electricity and "there ain't nothing wrong with electronics." I think this was in a Miles Davis documentary. Not to fear, though. Acoustic instruments will always be with us too.
Kraftwerk were so far ahead of the music world, primitive as it was, at that time. People can look back at them now and snicker but these were serious musicians who integrated art with technology like no one had ever seen. Impressive and still cool after all these years.
Just analize this music done in the middle of the 70s.Its amazing.Kraftwerk s music lovers could think this is an incipient sound if we hear tthe other versions of autobahn but its just the beginning of the influence of technology over music
You're right. They even made another percussion instrument, based on photoelectric cells. But it couldn't be controlled properly live, due to interferences with stage lights. You can read a funny anecdote about this in Wolfgang Flür's book 'I was a robot'.
The Drummer did an Autobiography, read it if you want to get the skinny on the whole amazing story. Love their music, and there just isn't any other band that comes close, even now, to the amazing textured soundscapes they created.., The Remix CD is great too!
The Balanescu quartet made a really impressive Autobahn version for string quartet (and very respectful with the rhythm, harmonies and general arrangements). There are other artists who made classicla versions of other Kraftwerk songs. Even the Viena Choir and Orchestra made a symphonic TEE. Kraftwerk music sounds cool with classic intruments, without changing too many things of the mechanical spirit. Check it at TH-cam and enjoy it :)
Great video, don't know why people are going on about ppg synths though! This was made way before PPG's were around. The two synths here are a Mini Moog used by Ralf and an Arp Odyssey played by Florian, the other ksys are an organ and an electric piano! Sorry for being an anorak :)
I doubt it's a matter of leaving the spirit of the group behind, he probably wants to relax at his age.He deserves it, for all his great creative achievements
Ode to the beetle, bocho, fusca...and many many other alias in different countries around the world for the Wolskwagen Beetle. This is the homenage from the fathers of the electronic music!
first all-electronic band in the world. If anybody can take credit for inventing Techno or Industrial its these guys. Computer World is my favorite album by them, it came out in 1981
Best of all: They play LIVE in it. Ahhh, I remember listening to the 22-MINUTE-SINGLE (No 1 in the German charts back then) in our car on the AUTOBAHN of course.
I'm afraid a full-length recording does not exist. This was a short piece shot for the BBC programme TOMORROW'S WORLD in 1975 (possibly because Kraftwerk were playing a major UK tour at that time).
When I watched this video, I firstly got shocked by it intro sound. They were the first band to play electronic dark pop music in 1974. They first invented electronic drum sound with sticks. So imposing sound. Trans Europe express “ n’ Radioactivity have been so pioneering
How can anyone be so ahead of their time!!?? Not to mention the balls it must have taken for them to play this at a time where everyone else was still "shacking their buggy" to disco sound. "Machine music"!! haha This is priceless! I wonder what the fathers of electronic music think about 90ies techno though lol Whatever became of them by the way? Does anyone know? Anyway, great stuff!
These guys are true poineers. Thanks to them we get to enjoy the new gods of techno like Aphex twin, squarepusher and Music. And btw, this is as techno as it can get radioguyuk.
yep, Ralf&Florian totally rule through all the ages of electronic music! autobahn here sounds totally diffrent than on the LP, no to mention the length... :)
Long live Kraftwerk. They are way beyond. They had a deep and profound understanding of rhythm. Devo was cool, but these guys were the goods. Geeks with real street cred.
They were the first really good "machine based" group down here in good old germany, today take a look at the billboardcharts or any charts (except oldies) and just try to find a song that has no computer generated part in it, summed up Ireally like this band and even got some original store bought tapes of their music
If this symphonic and epic tune would have been recorded today, it still would be an masterpiece, but this has been composed and released in 1975! *You may watch this: Kraftwerk - Ruckzuck (Live 1970!) Kraftwerk - Tanzmusik (Live 1973!) Kraftwerk - Autobahn (Live on BBC 1975) Kraftwerk - Europe Endless (1977) Kraftwerk - Die Mensch Maschine (1978) Kraftwerk - Computerwelt (Live 1981) Kraftwerk - Tour de France Kraftwerk - Radioactivity Kraftwerk - Autobahn Kraftwerk - Music Non Stop
the most amazing part is these guys where doing this stuff while most people were doing disco shit. truly waaaaaaaaaaay ahead of their time. no one else was even close to doing anything this original in '75
the mighty Kraftwerk...the best electronic band ever...great little documentary..thanks for posting cecilbeans
Wolfgang and Karl really rocked the handmade electric drums!
You can certainly can say that again. That's probably why the Minimoog is one of the most beautiful synths and of course the Prophet 5 which also has a lovely wooden chassis. They 're also definitly one of the best sounding synths there is.
Florian's sarcastic smile is the finest moment for me.
I agree
Modern music owes so much to these guys and yet many in the mainstream will never understand or even know who they are.
Brilliant EM Group ! Poland Loves Kraftwerk ;-)
Über 30 Jahre als und noch immer ein Meilenstein der Musikgeschichte. Ein Vorbild unzähliger Elektro-Bands.Diese revolutiönare Technik "damals" ist schon geil...
Narrator: Kraftwerk have a name for this. It’s called Machine Musik.
Me: Shut up! I don’t care! I’m trying to listen to this awesome music!
These men deserve the respect of every electronic music lover. I personally don't like their music, but I can see how what they done back in the 70s influenced generations of musicians to come. They built custom instruments to express themselves through music. True visionaries and fathers of electronic music. Where would we be today without them?
kraftwerk fantastic musicians/scientists of music i still have autobahn the album and it is treasured thanks for posting and thank you youtube !
They have a single of this song that is 30 minutes long and it just blows me away. Its so relaxing.
Love kraftwerk

Thanks for posting this video. So awesome to see and hear these again.
This was my absolute favorite band back in the day and I still like their music!
I love Kraftwerk, my friends were lucky enough to see them on their last tour. Talk about ahead of your time!
Aaahh this is awesome, I'd never seen this bit before eventhough there was a point in time when I scavenged and collected Kraftwerk videos like a deranged squirrell. Lovely.
listening to joy division and then this it makes total sense how influential they were! great stuff!
absolutely perfect synth...and all the instruments made by them selves....how can you question perfection#
Excellent thanks for this totally amazing 2009
wil the "KIDS" really understand how amazing this was in the 70s
Thank you Kraftwerk for helping to initiate this amazing chapter in the evolution of music.
so many wonderful memories thx for the post!
hahaha, this video made me laugh so much. A great change after watching Mr.Crossmack all day
I remember listening to the original recording of this in July 1975 in England, and it made me dizzy. It actually scared me! How funny is that? Of course, I was only 10 then, so I'd llove to hear it again and see what my reaction is. I love this group!
Great clip thanks, I went to see them in Manchester July 09, ive put some videos on here if you wish to see them
Super!!!!!Tout simplement mn morceau préféré!
these guys were pioneers, the fathers of what we now know as Techno. Saw them at Auckland town haal on the 26/11, damn cool.
This is just amazing!
History in the making...
Thanks so much for uploading!!!
If it wasn't for the internet we'd never have access to stuff like this...
(sight of satisfaction)
xoxo
Not only did they crate some of the most interesting music of its time, they built revolutionary instruments with which to do it...
Epic.
the drums are so cool omg, imagine what kind of stuff they would have come up with today
Saw them playing this live at the Cardiff Capitol, September 1975. Also, 2 years ago in Sydney.
crazy germs! love that smile at the end.
I hope the mentioned 'suits' materialized. Kraftwerk were pioneers and God only knows where we'd be without them.
Florian rocking the ARP Odissey
desde adolesent aprendi a gostar deles e m praser telos novamente tinha eu os discos em vinil mas foram roubadas eles sao maravilhosos.flavia goiania go brasil
I remember just sitting around with my "buds" and this song would blow us away!!
I know what that is like. I got hooked on Kraftwerk from a documentry on tele eight years ago. And everyone else was hooked on alternative rock or hip hop. I dig innovative electronic music.
Delightful lead synth there, half of my face screws up into a ball when I hear it and I wouldn't have it any other way
That’s the type of synth you shouldn’t hear directly :)
amazing!
Very cool, originally filmed for the BBC's Tommorow's World! I want an electronic lapel!
The jazz saxophonist Wayne Shorter once pointed out that your nervous system runs on electricity and "there ain't nothing wrong with electronics." I think this was in a Miles Davis documentary. Not to fear, though. Acoustic instruments will always be with us too.
It's still pretty amazing how much effort they put into it.
I had no idea Kraftwerk were even around back in 1975. That sounds so excellent even back then.
Kraftwerk were so far ahead of the music world, primitive as it was, at that time. People can look back at them now and snicker but these were serious musicians who integrated art with technology like no one had ever seen. Impressive and still cool after all these years.
Autobahn was released in 1974, at least 7-8 years ahead of the music at that time. Genius.
Their best track ever. Its so cool. I always remember the only person brave enough to play the full version on Radio 1 was the late John Peel.
Hahaha! Holy damn, theyre so young.. This is adorable!
"All the hip hop of the early 80s can thnak these guys " True.
Just analize this music done in the middle of the 70s.Its amazing.Kraftwerk s music lovers could think this is an incipient sound if we hear tthe other versions of autobahn but its just the beginning of the influence of technology over music

Increíble, cuando la música disco no estaba ni en proyecto, ya existía la música electrónica! lo máximo Kraftwerk
Omg he smiled! (I was beginning to wonder if Kraftwerk themselves were robots). A revalation in the roots of Electronic music.
son los creadores y dueños de un estilo musical unico, exclusivo y que perdurará siempre.
Saw them last September here in Dublin! Amazing!!
Most underrated musicians ever
The Drummer did an Autobiography, read it if you want to get the skinny on the whole amazing story. Love their music, and there just isn't any other band that comes close, even now, to the amazing textured soundscapes they created.., The Remix CD is great too!
2:15 That face!^^
The electronic drums you see are build by them self. That tells me they know about how electronics work^^
so unbelieveably retro! Love it!
dis is one of there best songs ever ;)
I love it towards the end...the sounds of the cars passing by. Haah.
long time without listen that song thats to bring me back memories
The round plattens on the "drum" kit are the "pans" from Ohaus analytical digital scales, you can tell by the bump pattern on the edge of each.
Check it at TH-cam and enjoy it :)
awesome!more of these pls!!
i would love to see this particular performance in full-length
Kraftwerk are just soooo cool!! Where would we be now without them??? Avant Garde!!
Great video, don't know why people are going on about ppg synths though! This was made way before PPG's were around. The two synths here are a Mini Moog used by Ralf and an Arp Odyssey played by Florian, the other ksys are an organ and an electric piano! Sorry for being an anorak :)

This video is my FAVOURITE !!! ITS VERY COMIC jajajajajajajajajajajajajajajaja
That's German Engineering for you! Great group of friends and colleagues. Brilliant minds.
When I watched this video, I firstly got shocked by it intro sound. They were the first band to play electronic dark pop music in 1974. They first invented electronic drum sound with sticks. So imposing sound. Trans Europe express “ n’ Radioactivity have been so pioneering

the beatles of electronic music. simply the best.
hey man! cool stuf that! some music history...
This tune makes me feel happy 🎉❤
That's the first time I've seen florian smiling. The rest of the time he looks at you like a robot (part of the act I suppose).
Can you imagine what this sounded like in 1975? It is amazing even in 2007!
These guys were so far ahead of their time it's amazing.
Un freekin believable! This live document shows history in the making...
Great mini-doco. Thanks for sharing! ^_^
They are the godfathers of electronic music!
Yes thats is it!
well It's been Confirmed that Kraftwerk IS NOT touring in 2010 and 2011, and Ralf personally said that they are working on it during that time period.
absolutely love that track
They seem so ahead of 1975. I bet many of today's artists can't dare do something as creative and risky as kraftwerk.
musica que a pesar del tiempo que tiene sigue vigente
Long live Kraftwerk. They are way beyond. They had a deep and profound understanding of rhythm. Devo was cool, but these guys were the goods. Geeks with real street cred.
little did they know back then, that this 'machine music' as they called it would sweep the world!

Florian smiles so tenderly... I just love them!!! By the way, I'm completely in love with them...
amazing sound,
эта версия автобана просто сносит башню
Brilliant history ! I loved them to no end !
Do they? Really? That's great! I can't wait...XD AWSOME!!!
If this symphonic and epic tune would have been recorded today, it still would be an masterpiece, but this has been composed and released in 1975!
